Chapter 1 - The job interview

Jessica Simpson, 21 had just graduated from college, excited yet uncertain about the next chapter of her life. She had spent the past few weeks sending out job applications, hoping for the right opportunity to present itself. Her friends had already secured positions at various companies, and she felt the pressure to follow suit. But nothing seemed to click.

One sunny afternoon, as she walked past a sleek building, the name of the company caught her attention: Bryton Industries. She'd heard about the company's prestige and how it was a leader in its field. Jessica hesitated for a moment before she walked inside, hoping that she could at least get a feel for the corporate world.

Inside, the receptionist smiled politely, but Jessica could sense an air of formality that made her nervous. She introduced herself and mentioned she was looking for job opportunities. The receptionist, with a practiced tone, informed her that the only available position was in the office of Mr. Brian Whitmore, the company's son, who managed the team for which the role was open.

Jessica, always willing to take a chance, insisted that the receptionist connect her with Brian. She had no idea what she was walking into.

Minutes later, she was sitting nervously outside a large office, looking at the polished glass windows that reflected the bustling city outside. She didn't know what to expect. But she knew that if she didn't try, she'd regret it.

The door opened, and a man stepped out. He was tall, with sharp features and an intense gaze. His appearance was commanding, the kind of presence that made people step aside. His clothes were tailored perfectly, and he looked like someone who was used to getting what he wanted. His name is Brian whitmore, 25 years and the son to the owner of the company (Bryton Industries). Jessica stood up quickly, introducing herself as she extended her hand.

"I'm Jessica," she said, her voice a little unsteady.

He barely glanced at her hand before speaking.

"Brian Whitmore. You're here for the position in my department, right?" His tone was flat, as if he didn't particularly care.

"Yes," Jessica replied, trying to mask her nervousness.

He eyed her for a moment before nodding curtly.

"Follow me." He turned on his heel and led her into his office.

As soon as Jessica entered, she was taken aback by the coldness of the space. The large, modern desk in the middle of the room was immaculate, with not a single piece of paper out of place. The walls were adorned with expensive art, and the large windows offered a stunning view of the city skyline. The whole room exuded authority, and it was clear that this was a man who did not entertain distractions.

"Sit down," Brian ordered as he sat at his desk, not bothering to offer any pleasantries. "Tell me why you think you deserve to work here."

Jessica took a deep breath, steadying herself before speaking.

"I'm hardworking, eager to learn, and willing to do whatever it takes to prove myself," she said confidently. "I may not have a lot of experience, but I believe I can contribute to your team."

Brian glanced at her, unimpressed. "You think you're special because you have ambition?" he asked sharply. "I don't need someone with ambition. I need someone who can handle this job. Not someone who will waste my time."

Jessica felt a spark of irritation at his dismissive tone, but she kept her cool.

"I can handle whatever you throw at me," she replied. "If you give me the chance, I'll show you."

Brian leaned back in his chair, his cold eyes studying her for a moment longer. There was something about her, something that caught his attention—though he wasn't sure what it was. He had rejected every other applicant his father had sent to him, but something about Jessica was different.

"Fine," he said suddenly, surprising her. "I'll give you a shot. But you'll have to wait. Come back in two weeks. If you can be patient, maybe you can prove you're worth it."

Jessica was taken aback. "Two weeks?" she repeated, her brows furrowing in confusion. "That's a long time to wait just for a response."

"Two weeks or don't bother coming back at all," Brian said curtly, turning his attention back to his papers as if the conversation was already over.

Frustrated, Jessica stood up and walked toward the door, her heart pounding with a mix of anger and determination.

"I'll come back in two weeks," she said firmly, leaving her CV on his desk as she walked out. "But don't expect me to wait around like a fool."

As she walked out of the office, she could hear Brian's voice calling after her, but she didn't turn around. He could be as rude as he wanted—she wasn't about to back down.
