Chapter 48 - Queen’s Shadow

Two months had passed since Camille disappeared into the cracks of the world. In that time, Nancy had become more than a CEO—she had become a strategist, a tactician, and a name whispered in global circles with both fear and awe.

But power came at a cost.

Nancy leaned back in a sleek leather chair in a hidden underground hub beneath the city—a facility only a handful knew existed. The monitors surrounding her displayed encrypted messages, heat signatures, satellite captures, and coded transmissions.

"Is this what winning feels like?" she murmured.

Adrian stepped in, tossing her a protein bar. "Winning is exhausting, apparently."

She laughed quietly, catching it. "Any updates?"

"Yes," he said, serious now. "Our guy in Macau traced Camille's funding trail to an AI defense start-up—one that used to belong to a military subcontractor. She's not just building a bunker. She's building tech. Scary, smart tech."

Nancy stood. "Then we have to accelerate Queen's Shadow."

The Operation Begins

At exactly midnight, Queen's Shadow launched its first mission. A cyber strike disguised as an outdated algorithm swept through Camille's shell networks, leaving behind digital breadcrumbs that would trick her hackers into following false data trails.

A second team infiltrated a financial summit in Prague, posing as venture capitalists. Their goal: intercept one of Camille's newer investors, a Russian billionaire known for arms smuggling.

Meanwhile, Nancy remained at the center, orchestrating every move.

Unexpected Setback

Two days into the operation, an alert blinked red.

"System breach," one of the analysts called out. "They traced one of our decoys... and they sent a virus back."

Screens fizzled. Lights dimmed.

Adrian rushed to Nancy's side. "It's a trap."

Nancy's eyes didn't blink. "No—it's bait. They're overreaching."

With a swipe, she activated an air-gapped backup server and deployed a containment protocol. Within minutes, the breach was isolated—and the reverse trace showed Camille's location had pinged.

They had her.

"Send the coordinates to the Prague team," Nancy ordered. "We're going in."

Meanwhile – Camille's Lair

Camille slammed her hand against the desk.

"She's not playing fair anymore," she hissed. "She's thinking like me."

Nyx, her hacker, frowned. "No... she's thinking better."

Camille's jaw clenched. "Then we escalate. Call the client in Cairo. We're not building shadows anymore. We're building an empire."

Back in New York – Rooftop Scene

That night, Nancy and Adrian stood beneath the stars, a rare moment of calm.

"You know," Adrian said, "we were supposed to have a normal contract marriage. Cold, calculated."

Nancy smiled faintly. "We've been anything but normal."

He turned to her. "Do you regret it?"

"No," she said, watching the stars. "Because through it all, we became something neither of us expected. Partners. Equals."

He reached for her hand. "And now?"

Nancy looked at him. "Now we become legends."
