Chapter 1 - Just Beyond Reach

"Intruder," blared a plain, automated voice atop the lone building. "Classified information has been compromised. Intruder. Intruder."

As she stopped to catch her breath, Mariam looked back. The navy-clad men were running towards her, black boots splashing the puddles on the worn urban streets. A cool chill of adrenaline ran down her spine. It might not have been her first time, but the exhilaration never got old.

They took out their guns, shooting at her. As highly trained soldiers, they hit her bullseye each time. Mariam stood still, for a second, simply to watch their reaction. But, as always, it simply whizzed through her torso, leg, shoulder, and wherever else they hit. Completely uninjured, Mariam smiled with zeal at their expense. The idiots kept on firing as if that was going to do anything. It took more than some bullets to get rid of her. Though, whether she could be gotten rid of in the first place was a whole other matter the officials would have to worry about.

The closest one, multiple yards away, was dumbfounded. Ron had hit the girl, but she simply grinned, unfazed. He pulled the trigger again. It went through her head, as if she is simply a mirage, a dream. Another shot. And then another. It was at that moment the policeman found out that this wasn't any criminal.

Enough play time. They can't catch her, but they can still get the goods. Although she was one the best in her line of work, she couldn't afford to give the police an advantage. Cash was like sand in a desert. In rich abundance, but hard to pool in your palm as the wind constantly blows it away.

As Mariam ran with the eBanks passcodes in her USB, memories of her long-gone parents flashed through her mind like a montage. They told her that the authorities wouldn't condone someone who they couldn't touch, figuratively and literally. They were right. But, her fear of being found out was nothing but a memory. The thing with hiding was that the truth always found a way, whether one likes it or not. Anyway, hiding didn't suit Mariam in the first place, that's for sure.

A black Toyota screeched to a halt in front of her, spraying muddy water all over Mariam's new coat. She restrained a groan. This was the second time this week, and it was her favorite too. She yanked the door handle and jumped in. Mariam risked a glance out the door. The men, as if they were bees avenging their stolen honey, were gaining on her. Time to leave these policemen in her dust, or to better suit the weather, in her muddy water. As soon as she slammed the door, the car veered into an alley Ron couldn't see.

"Crap." He swore. Ron had never seen anything like this in all his years of work. He had never even fail at catching a robber before. Ron never liked change to begin with. Best in his year, his long-awaited chief-of-the-decade award was now in danger. But, the real issue at foot was that that girl wasn't normal by anyone's standards. This was state-of-the-art security. It's impossible for a girl to stroll into a government building and illegally walk right out with sensitive codes without even a scratch. Heck, it's not even possible for a group of highly trained, highly experienced grown people to do that. Yet, she did it anyway. He took out his radio, hand trembling, and admitted, "She's… Untouchable… Shit, don't even think she's human."
