Cherreads

Chapter 12 - The Hints of the Magic Contract

Alright, buckle up, buttercups!

Here we go diving into the deliciously dangerous world of Lila and Elian!

The wind, as it turns out, wasn't whispering directions so much as screaming riddles.

After what felt like an eternity of "Is it this alley? No, wait, maybe that dumpster smells more…magical?" they finally stumbled upon it: a dingy shop wedged between a laundromat and a questionable-looking tattoo parlor.

A neon sign flickered above the door, proclaiming in a font that screamed "I haven't been updated since 1985": "Mystical McGuffins & More!"

Elian raised an eyebrow, a gesture that clearly translated to: "Are you sure this isn't some elaborate prank?" Lila, however, was already halfway to the door.

She could practically *feel* the magic thrumming within, a desperate hum that resonated with her own awakening blood.

The bell above the door jingled – a sound that could curdle milk – as they entered.

The air inside was thick with the cloying scent of incense and something vaguely resembling burnt hair.

Shelves overflowed with dusty trinkets, glowing crystals that probably cost more than her apartment, and jars filled with things Lila desperately hoped were *not* pickled eyeballs.

Behind the counter, a man with more chins than she could count and a greasy comb-over that defied gravity beamed at them.

This had to be the Magic Dealer.

He looked less like a purveyor of ancient secrets and more like a guy who sold slightly used vacuum cleaners on late-night TV.

"Well, well, well," the Magic Dealer wheezed, his eyes glittering with avarice.

"What have we here? Two young…adventurers? Come to peruse my humble collection?"

Elian stepped forward, radiating the kind of aristocratic disapproval that could wither houseplants.

"We are here for information regarding magical contracts."

The Magic Dealer's smile widened, revealing a disturbing amount of gold teeth.

"Ah, contracts! A complex and…profitable field. Knowledge comes at a price, my dears." He rubbed his fingers together, a universal sign that needed no translation.

Lila swallowed, her stomach doing the tango.

This guy reeked of "shady deal alert." "We heard you might know something about… the Bloodbound Contracts," she ventured, her voice barely a whisper.

The Magic Dealer's eyes narrowed.

"Bloodbound, eh? Nasty business. Very nasty. Information like that… well, that'll cost you." He gestured towards a locked display case filled with glittering artifacts.

"Something from in there, perhaps? Something… *valuable*?"

Lila's heart sank.

She didn't have anything valuable, unless you counted her extensive collection of cat-themed mugs.

She glanced at Elian, a flicker of worry in her eyes.

Elian, however, simply nodded.

"We have something that might interest you." He reached into his coat and produced a small, obsidian box.

The air crackled with contained energy as he opened it, revealing a shimmering amulet.

It pulsed with an ancient power that made Lila's skin tingle.

The Magic Dealer's eyes nearly popped out of his head.

"Oh, my…" he breathed, practically drooling.

"That's…that's an ancient Soulbinder! I haven't seen one of those in centuries!"

"Consider it payment," Elian said, his voice firm.

"Now, tell us what you know about the Bloodbound Contracts."

The Magic Dealer snatched the amulet, his fingers trembling.

"Alright, alright! Don't get your breeches in a twist. Bloodbound Contracts… they're rare, powerful, and incredibly dangerous. They bind two individuals together with magic, sharing their strengths, their weaknesses… their very life force."

He paused, his gaze shifting nervously towards the shop's grimy window.

"But they also attract attention. Unwanted attention."

As if on cue, the door burst open with a crash, sending dust and cheap merchandise flying.

A figure cloaked in shadows stormed into the shop, his face hidden beneath a dark hood.

Council Spy.

Of course.

"The deal is off!" the Council Spy snarled, his voice raspy and distorted.

"The girl belongs to the Council!"

"Oh, come on!" Lila groaned.

"Can't we have *one* normal day where we don't get attacked by evil shadow people?"

Elian sighed, a long-suffering sound.

"Apparently not." He stepped in front of Lila, his eyes blazing with icy fury.

"You will not interfere."

The Council Spy laughed, a chilling sound that echoed through the cluttered shop.

"You think you can stop me? You're just a pampered aristocrat playing at being a hero!"

"Wanna bet?" Lila muttered, her hands crackling with newfound energy.

This time, she wasn't going to be a damsel in distress.

She was going to fight.

The Council Spy lunged forward, drawing a wickedly curved dagger.

Lila reacted instinctively, channeling the power of her bloodline.

A wave of energy erupted from her, slamming into the Council Spy like a runaway train.

He stumbled backward, momentarily stunned.

"Now, Elian!" she yelled, gritting her teeth.

"Do your thing!"

Elian didn't need to be told twice.

He unleashed a torrent of raw magical power, blasting the Council Spy with a force that sent him crashing into a shelf of crystal skulls.

The skulls shattered into a million glittering pieces, showering the Spy in a sparkly, albeit painful, rain.

The Council Spy roared in frustration, struggling to his feet.

Lila and Elian fought as one, a perfect combination of raw power and refined skill.

Lila used her burgeoning abilities to control and manipulate the environment, creating distractions and openings for Elian to exploit.

Elian, in turn, unleashed precise and devastating attacks, keeping the Council Spy constantly on the defensive.

It was a beautiful, chaotic dance of magic and mayhem, set against the backdrop of a truly terrible retail establishment.

Finally, with a combined effort, they managed to corner the Council Spy.

Elian unleashed a final blast of energy, sending him hurtling through the shop window and into the street outside.

"Well, that was… unpleasant," Elian said, dusting off his perfectly tailored coat.

Lila, still buzzing with adrenaline, grinned.

"Unpleasant but effective. We make a pretty good team, you know?"

The Magic Dealer, who had been cowering behind the counter throughout the entire ordeal, peeked out cautiously.

"Are…are they gone? Are they going to pay for the window?"

Elian shot him a look that could freeze lava.

"You have the information we need. Provide it."

The Magic Dealer, suddenly very cooperative, rattled off everything he knew about the Bloodbound Contracts.

He warned them about the risks, the potential for betrayal, and the sheer, terrifying power that the contract could unleash.

"It's not something to be taken lightly," he croaked, his eyes wide with fear.

"You're playing with fire."

As they prepared to leave, Elian turned to Lila.

He gently took her hand in his, his thumb caressing her knuckles.

His gaze was intense, filled with a warmth that made her heart skip a beat.

"Are you sure you want to do this, Lila?" he asked softly.

"This contract… it will change everything."

Lila looked into his eyes, seeing not just concern, but something deeper, something she couldn't quite name.

A strange warmth that seemed to flood through her entire body.

"I have to, Elian," she said, her voice trembling slightly.

"I need to know the truth."

He squeezed her hand, a silent promise of support.

"Then we'll face it together."

A wave of warmth went through her, as Elian's voice broke her train of thought.

"The Magic Dealer did leave out one thing..." Elian paused, glancing down at Lila's hands, intertwined with his.

"A key ingredient for the Bloodbound Contract... is true love's first kiss."
