Chapter 3 - Payback

As Adam stepped out of the house, he felt the bone-chilling wind sweep over him; It was much stronger than when he was in the attic.

Before going out, he had put on his old armour—his gambeson, hauberk, bascinet, and gauntlets that were kept in a chest in his room.

This gear had kept him alive through countless years of being a mercenary, and now it would have to serve him once more.

With his sword at his hip, he traced back which way one of the spider looking things went.

It was dark on the street, but it was practically pitch black in the alleyway he needed to go through.

It felt like a trap. Maybe he was led there on purpose?

There was no way of knowing. The thing could've been at least a few blocks down by now; There shouldn't be anything here.

He moved further into the alleyway, unsheathing his sword. His heart was pounding.

He started looking all around him, trying to notice any movement with his right eye, but it was no use.

He had to rely on his hearing, though that was also dulled from the wind. The best course of action was to retreat to the street.

He looked behind him; The way he came from was covered in thick cobweb.

It was too late to turn back.

A loud thud sounded deeper into the alleyway. The only thing he could see was eight glowing red eyes staring at him.

This must be what killed her.

He was trembling. From how loud the thud was, this thing must be at least twice the size of the spider back at the house. Adam was definitely more prepared than last time, but the sheer size of the thing made up for that.

He had to go as close as he could to the webs behind him; maybe he would be able to somewhat see the creature.

As he walked backwards, it pursued Adam until He was cornered. He could see a bit now, but not enough to be able to fight properly.

He had to somehow get away from this thing.

Just as he was thinking that, the spider's eyes started shifting higher, along the side of the wall, ready to lunge at him.

The spider was out of the way, and he knew he had to take this small window of opportunity. Going deeper into the darkness was a risky move, but it was better than just standing here.

He sprinted forward; the spider getting caught off guard by the sudden movement, only starting to chase after him a moment later.

He could hear it's legs scuttling after him, not far behind.

As he ran down the alley, he could barely make out two paths; one to the left and one to the right. he decided to run left. The second he made the turn he could see a flicker of torchlight not too far away, already illuminating his path.

He just needed to get to it.

Adam could hear the spider slowly getting farther and farther away from him; though the fatigue was getting to his legs aswell. Suddenly, the sounds from the spider dissapeared. He tried to look back, curious.

The spider was mid air, barreling towards him.

He barely had enough time to react, diving to the side and banging up his head against the wall. the spider had missed it's mark, and now crashed to the ground, seemingly dazed.

Adam, still hurting from the fall, got up to his feet and saw what had happened to the spider.

He readied his sword, aiming to cut off at least two of it's legs.

He struck down his sword, but to his surprise, he could barely even cut into one of them.

trying not to waste this opportune moment, he went for a weakness almost any creature has: the eyes.

He stepped to the spider's head, grabbing it. He then stabbed straight into one of its eyes, driving his sword deep into its head, until the blade finally went out the other side. All the life in the spider's eyes was drained once the sword pierced through it.

It was over.

Exhausted and hurt, he slowly stumbled over to the end of alleyway.
