Trust in the Future
September 2006
The small apartment in Bozeman no longer felt like the modest starting point it once was. With the new influx of cash from both Sunny and James, their vision for Gibson & Liebmann was becoming a reality. After much thought and careful planning, both men decided to take a bold step forward—investing in their future. They were no longer just two people in a cramped space trying to make something happen. Now, they had a plan, a solid team, and the capital to make their dream come true.
Sunny had decided to put $250,000 fund into the company. It was a major move, but after seeing the potential of the business and the progress they'd made with Plants vs. Zombies, it felt like the right time. Likewise, James, put $250,000 of his trust fund into the company, who had also saved up from his family's wealth despite their opposition, matched that investment with another $250,000.
"I think this is it, James," Sunny said, sitting across from him at the small, but now fully furnished, office. They had just signed the lease for a tiny office in downtown Bozeman, with just enough room for their team to work and think. The money would go toward renting computers, office space, internet services, and purchasing the necessary equipment.
James looked at him and smiled. "I agree. This is the next step. We're really doing this, Sunny."
The decision to invest was a turning point for both of them. It felt like they were finally taking their vision to the next level. With the new office space, they could work without distractions, hire additional staff, and begin to scale up their operations.
Their team had already grown. Along with George Fan, the former Blizzard employee, they had brought on two programmers and one graphic designer. The team was small, but they were focused and committed to creating something great. This would be the foundation of a company that, one day, would disrupt the gaming industry.
A Small Celebration
After signing the necessary documents and getting the office set up, Sunny felt an overwhelming sense of pride. He looked around the office—a small space filled with brand-new equipment, a desk for each team member, and a large table in the middle for brainstorming sessions. It wasn't much, but it was their space.
James stood next to him, also taking it all in. "It's just the beginning, man. But it feels good, doesn't it?"
Sunny nodded. "Feels great. We've come a long way."
They decided to have a small celebration with their new team. James called for a pizza delivery, and everyone gathered in the break room. It was an intimate moment, but it was theirs. The team was excited, the energy was palpable, and they were all eager to get started on their first big project together.
As they clinked glasses and shared pizza, George spoke up. "We've got something special here. I've worked on a lot of games in my time, but there's something about this team, this project that feels different."
"I agree," James added, his casual demeanor still surprising Sunny. "There's a lot of potential here. We're building something that's not just about the game—it's about the future of entertainment."
Sunny raised his glass, a smile on his face. "Here's to Gibson & Liebmann, to the future, and to making something that lasts."
