Chapter 10 - CHAPTER EIGHT

Upstairs, in the relative quiet of the exclusive upper lounge, Jayden King Walton leaned back in one of the plush leather armchairs, a half-eaten plate of gourmet pasta forgotten on the small table beside him.

The usual easy banter with Ashtray and Jason had dwindled as his attention drifted downwards, drawn by the subtle shift in the atmosphere on the main cafeteria floor.

His gaze, initially detached and almost bored, had snagged on the unusual sight of Louisa Wren approaching Christopher Jacobs Mars's table. It wasn't often that scholarship students ventured into the orbit of the more established cliques unless absolutely necessary.

He watched with a detached curiosity as Louisa addressed Christopher, her posture a mixture of apprehension and a surprising defiance. Christopher, as always, seemed to relish the attention, a smug grin plastered on his face. Jayden couldn't quite make out their words over the general din, but the tension between them was palpable.

As Louisa spoke, Jayden noticed the subtle shift in Christopher's demeanor – a leaning forward, a conspiratorial tone. Then, Christopher's eyes flicked upwards, almost imperceptibly, in Jayden's direction. It was a fleeting glance, but Jayden caught it, a silent acknowledgment, a subtle nod to an unseen audience.

A flicker of something stirred within Jayden. Curiosity? Recognition? He wasn't entirely sure. He hadn't given the scholarship girl much thought since their initial, awkward encounters. But there was something about her directness, her willingness to confront Christopher, that was… unexpected.

As Christopher delivered his final, soft words, Jayden's gaze narrowed. "Some secrets… are best kept… for the right audience."

The implication hung in the air, and Jayden felt a prickle of awareness. Was he the "right audience" Christopher was referring to? And if so, what exactly did Christopher know?

He watched as Louisa stood there, the weight of Christopher's words seemingly pressing down on her. There was a vulnerability in her posture, but also a spark of something resilient.

He found himself wondering what had transpired between them, what secret Christopher held, and why his gaze had flickered upwards.

Ashtray, oblivious to Jayden's sudden absorption, snickered at a joke Jason had made. Jayden just gave him a half-smile, his mind still occupied by the scene unfolding below.

Christopher Jacobs Mars rarely did anything without an angle, without trying to curry favor or stir up drama. And the fact that his glance had included the upper lounge suggested that whatever this was about, it was meant for their ears.

Jayden leaned forward a little, his usual cool vibe cracking just a tiny bit. He wanted to know what Christopher knew. And why Louisa Wren was suddenly on his radar.

Lunch just got a little less boring.

A few tables away from Christopher's little drama show, Thea Devereux sat with her lunch untouched, looking like she'd just lost her favorite puppy. Marcus Morgan, meanwhile, was slowly sipping his juice, totally focused on Thea.

"Seriously, what's eating you?" Marcus finally asked, nodding at her cold-looking pasta. "And what's with the stare-down? You gonna burn a hole through the floor?"

Thea's eyes were glued to the private lounge upstairs. She watched Cassia laughing, like actually laughing, with another girl. This girl had streaks of rainbow colors in her hair and looked way too happy for a Tuesday. Anya Sterling.

"Cassia seems to be having a blast up there," Thea mumbled, a hint of something sour in her voice.

Marcus followed her gaze. "Dude, that's Anya. Her best friend. You wanna go join them? Pretty sure last time we talked, you weren't exactly fan club president of Anya."

"I don't hate her," Thea said quickly. "I just... don't get the whole Anya thing. What does Cassia even see in her?"

Marcus snorted, a little laugh escaping. "Called it. You were totally doing a happy dance in your head when Anya wasn't at school yesterday."

"Welll..." Thea admitted, a tiny blush creeping up her neck. "Maybe. A little. Kinda."

Just then, Cassia looked down and caught Thea's eye. Cassia actually waved, a genuine smile on her face. Thea plastered on a smile and waved back.

Up in the Private Lounge:

Cassia leaned back in her chair, genuinely enjoying Anya's latest story about her disastrous attempt at baking macarons.

Anya's infectious laughter filled their corner of the lounge, a bright contrast to the more subdued atmosphere below.

"Seriously, Cass," Anya giggled, pushing a stray rainbow-streaked strand of hair behind her ear, "they looked like alien pancakes! And tasted even worse."

Cassia laughed, shaking her head. "You and baking. It's a never-ending saga of epic fails." She glanced down at the main floor, her eyes briefly catching Thea's wave. She offered a polite smile in return before turning back to Anya.

"So," Anya continued, picking at her gourmet salad, "did anything interesting happen downstairs yesterday? It was so boring being stuck at that dentist appointment."

Cassia shrugged, trying to sound nonchalant. "Nothing much. Just the usual Charterhouse drama." Except for the scholarship girl's little outburst at the welcome party, and Christopher's weirdly intense interest in her today. But she wasn't about to bring that up to Anya just yet. No need to complicate things.

"Oh, come on," Anya nudged her playfully. "Spill the tea! You know something happened."

Cassia hesitated for a split second, her gaze flicking down to the main floor again, almost as if she could sense the undercurrents of tension swirling around the scholarship girl and Christopher.

"Well," she began slowly, a thoughtful look on her face, "there was this… new scholarship student. She's… definitely making an impression."

Anya's eyes widened, instantly intrigued. "Ooh, tell me everything!"
