Chapter 6 - Stare

The day began like any other.

Morning light filtered through the high windows of the classroom, painting soft gold across the play mats and shelves of colorful toys. The children scattered into their routines—some at the blocks, others painting, some pretending to cook in the toy kitchen.

He sat on the floor, carefully arranging animal figures into a row. One by one, not rushing. Each one had its place.

Then a shadow fell across the carpet.

Another boy—taller, louder, the kind who liked to test others—stood over him. His eyes narrowed at the quiet boy and his neat little animal line.

"You always play alone," the boy said. "That's weird."

He didn't respond. Just placed the next animal.

The boy stepped closer. "Are you too slow or just scared to talk?"

Still, no answer.

The boy sneered, and with a quick kick, knocked the line of animals across the floor.

They scattered in all directions.

He froze.

Something burned inside him—not fear, but something else. Something unfamiliar and hot and rising.

He stood.

Not fast. Not dramatic.

But steady.

His eyes locked onto the boy's. No tears. No shrinking.

He walked past him—calmly—and began picking up the scattered animals.

One by one.

The other children had started to notice. A few watched quietly. The two who always stood by him weren't nearby today—but somehow, he didn't need them in that moment.

The boy tried again. "Why don't you say something?"

This time, he did.

Not with words.

He stood up straight, held one of the animals gently, and looked the boy in the eye.

Then, slowly, he turned and placed the figure back in line.

Not broken. Not rushed. Not afraid.

The boy shifted, uncomfortable now.

The silence wasn't weakness anymore.

It was strength.

A teacher came over soon after, her voice calm but sharp. The moment passed. The other boy was pulled aside, given a quiet talk and a frown.

But he?

He sat back down, finished his animal line.

And for the first time, he realized something:

He didn't need to shout to be heard.

Sometimes, silence *was* the voice.

And it was enough.
