Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: A Tactical Dilemma

The Ajax U-23 squad had just wrapped up their quarterfinal victory against Feyenoord, and the locker room was alive with excitement. The players exchanged high-fives and banter, but beneath the surface, a deeper tension simmered. The victory had been hard-fought, but the team knew their journey wasn't over yet. The semifinal awaited them, and the challenges ahead would be even greater.

Femi leaned against his locker, letting out a long breath, trying to take in the moment. He had just played in a crucial match, contributing to a hard-earned 2-1 win. Yet, his mind couldn't shake the next challenge: Josip Van der Berg. The thought of his return loomed over him like a shadow. Femi had earned his place in the starting lineup, but Josip was an experienced, well-rounded player, and with his fitness returning, the competition was about to get real.

"Great game, Femi," Liam said, pulling him out of his thoughts. "You were brilliant out there."

Femi forced a smile. Liam had been a supportive presence since the start of his time at Ajax, and even in this tense atmosphere, he found comfort in his friend's words. "Thanks, Liam. But you know how it is—nothing is certain in this game."

Liam nodded knowingly. "You've earned it, though. Just keep doing what you're doing."

Femi appreciated the encouragement, but the internal battle continued. Josip's impending return made him wonder if he could hold onto his spot. The left-back position was suddenly more competitive than ever.

Meanwhile, Coach Bakker paced in his office, reviewing the footage from the match. He had been impressed with his team's resilience, but he couldn't ignore the elephant in the room: the return of Josip. As much as Femi had proven himself, Bakker had to consider all options. The tactical decisions for the semifinal were starting to weigh heavily on his mind.

Later that evening, Coach Bakker gathered the squad for their debrief. The mood was more somber, the reality of the semifinal creeping into the players' consciousness. They had a job to do.

"We've made it to the semifinals," Bakker started, his voice steady. "But this is where it really gets tough. Whether we face AZ or PSV, we've got to be at our best. We can't afford to let our guard down now. We need to take what we learned from the Feyenoord game and build on it."

He turned his gaze toward Femi and Josip. "I want both of you ready. We're going to need all hands on deck for this match."

Femi nodded, trying to focus on the task at hand, though his mind kept drifting back to the possibility of losing his starting role. Josip, seated across from him, maintained a calm composure, his eyes betraying no emotion. He had been silent throughout most of the conversation, but Femi knew that Josip's return was inevitable, and it made the competition more intense.

Bakker's words weren't just about the upcoming match—they were about what came next. His tactical thinking was already in overdrive. He couldn't deny that Femi's performances had been impressive, but Josip's experience couldn't be ignored either. How could he balance this decision?

After the meeting, Bakker retired to his office, the weight of his thoughts pressing on him. He gazed at the tactical board, his mind working through all the permutations. Could he stick with Femi, who had been playing so well, or should he turn to Josip, with his vast experience and tactical awareness?

Femi had brought energy, pace, and defensive solidity to the left-back position. His rapid growth had been remarkable. Yet, there were moments where Bakker wondered whether the young player was ready for the pressure of a semifinal. Could he rise to the occasion, especially against an AZ or PSV side?

Bakker knew the key to success lay in balance. Josip had the maturity, the physicality, and the tactical understanding that came from years of experience, but his attitude could be a double-edged sword. Would he be able to slot back into the team seamlessly? And could he perform at the level Ajax needed?

The dilemma gnawed at him.

Bakker leaned forward in his chair, his fingers tapping nervously on the desk. He knew one thing: he couldn't let the team's success be determined by a single decision. He had to find a way to make the most of both players.

What if there was a way to play both Femi and Josip together? A partnership, maybe? Femi's pace could complement Josip's strength and positioning. In theory, it could work—Femi as the more attacking, dynamic player on the left, with Josip providing the defensive cover and leadership.

But Bakker wasn't sure if it was feasible. Could they work together without stepping on each other's toes? The next few days would be crucial for determining that. There was a lot to think about—strategy, team chemistry, and the pressure of the semifinal.

Bakker let out a long sigh, his mind still turning. Whatever decision he made, he had to be confident in it. He couldn't afford doubt at this stage of the tournament.

His thoughts turned to the upcoming opponent, the winner of the AZ vs PSV match. Both teams were dangerous, and the Ajax defense would need to be at its best. Would Femi's form hold up? Or would Josip's return give Ajax the edge they needed?

As the night wore on, Bakker found himself lost in the uncertainty, the weight of his tactical dilemma pressing down on him. He had a lot of time to think, but the decision would come soon. And when it did, the course of Ajax U-23's tournament could very well change.
