Dawnfyr stood at the entrance of Veilroot Hollow, his towering frame illuminated by the soft glow of the portal behind him. The aftermath of his victory lingered in the air, the subtle hum of the dungeon's energy fading into the background. It should have been a moment of quiet triumph, a time to savor the spoils of his hard-fought battle. Instead, the game decided to turn his achievement into a full-blown spectacle.
System Announcement: Player Dawnfyr has conquered the hidden dungeon Veilroot Hollow! First clear on Alfheim Server!
The announcement rang out across the server, accompanied by a chorus of notifications lighting up Marcus's HUD. He groaned, massaging his temples as more messages poured in.
System Announcement: Player Dawnfyr is the first to solo a hidden dungeon! Achievement unlocked: Lone Vanguard.
World Chat:
[SaberKnight]: WHO IS THIS GUY? Hidden dungeon solo? Seriously?
[ForestFay]: OMG, share the build! How do you even solo Veilroot?!
[ArcaneFire]: Bro, save some achievements for the rest of us.
Marcus gritted his teeth, his annoyance outweighing his pride. "Why can't I just enjoy my victory in peace?" he muttered. He rummaged through the system window, scrolling past countless tabs and settings until he finally found it: the notification settings. With a few decisive clicks, he deactivated all world announcements and incoming messages.
Silence. Sweet, glorious silence.
"Finally," Marcus sighed, his shoulders relaxing. "Much better."
With that, he opened his inventory, sorted through the rewards, and ensured everything was in order. The Dryad subclass, the new racial transformation into Forest Ogre, and all the other loot were safely logged. Satisfied, Marcus took a moment to admire his character's new appearance—slimmer yet still imposing, with glowing green vine-like markings spiraling across his crimson skin.
"It's been a good day," he said, nodding to himself as he logged out.
The glow of the gaming pod dimmed as Marcus removed the neural interface helmet and stretched, his body protesting after hours of sitting still. He yawned, running a hand through his hair as he stood up. The penthouse was quiet, the city lights flickering outside his window. Despite the adrenaline still buzzing through him, it was time to unwind.
Marcus's routine after logging off had become second nature: a quick shower, a light meal, and some time to clear his head. Tonight, he opted for a simple stir-fry, the scent of garlic and soy sauce filling the air as he cooked. As he ate, his mind drifted back to the game—the intense fights, the new abilities, and, of course, the endless notifications.
"Why does everything I do in this game have to be such a big deal?" he mused aloud. "I'm just trying to enjoy myself, not become the center of attention."
The next morning, Marcus decided to take a break from gaming. Instead, he made plans to meet up with his gym buddy at a local café. The two had met months ago while working out, bonding over shared fitness goals and, surprisingly, a shared love for gaming.
Marcus arrived early, choosing a cozy corner booth with a view of the bustling street outside. As he sipped his coffee, he spotted his friend walking in—a tall, lean man with sharp features and a casual yet confident stride.
"Yo, Marcus!" his friend called out, waving as he approached.
"Jake," Marcus greeted with a smirk. "About time you showed up."
Jake slid into the seat opposite him, grinning. "You're one to talk. Pretty sure I've been carrying you at the gym lately."
Marcus chuckled, shaking his head. "Keep dreaming."
The two bantered for a while, catching up on their workouts and swapping tips. But eventually, the conversation turned to gaming—a topic they both enjoyed diving into.
"So," Jake said, leaning back in his chair, "how's that new VR game treating you? YGGDRASIL, right?"
Marcus hesitated for a moment, wondering if he should spill the details of his recent achievements. "It's… intense," he said, choosing his words carefully. "The game's incredible, but let's just say I've been getting more attention than I'd like."
Jake raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Care to elaborate?"
"Well," Marcus began, recounting the hidden dungeon, the server-wide announcements, and the subsequent flood of messages. He left out the part about his in-game wealth, wanting to keep that detail private.
By the end of his story, Jake was laughing. "Dude, you're living every gamer's dream. First clears, rare subclasses—what's next, world domination?"
Marcus rolled his eyes. "Trust me, it's more stressful than it sounds."
Jake smirked, taking a sip of his coffee. "You know, you're lucky I'm a GM for YGGDRASIL. I could totally nerf your account if you keep showing off like that."
Marcus froze, staring at his friend in disbelief. "You're a GM?!"
Jake grinned, clearly enjoying Marcus's reaction. "Didn't I mention that? Yeah, I work on the dev team. I handle in-game events and moderation. Small world, huh?"
Marcus slumped back in his seat, groaning. "You're telling me you've been a GM this whole time and never said anything? You could've warned me about the notifications, man!"
Jake laughed, shaking his head. "Where's the fun in that? Besides, sounds like you're doing just fine on your own. But hey, if you ever need insider tips, maybe I'll cut you a deal."
The two friends continued to chat, their conversation a mix of playful jabs and genuine camaraderie. For Marcus, it was a reminder that, as much as he loved YGGDRASIL, the real world still had plenty to offer.
