Chapter 17: The Edge of Weight

The mountain path narrowed into a blade.

Sheer cliffs dropped on either side, mist curling up from the gorges below. The stones were slick from the storm that had passed two days ago, and the wind howled like something alive—something angry.

Aiden walked with precision, each step deliberate. Behind him, Torran followed in silence, eyes scanning the trail like a hawk.

They weren't being hunted.

Not yet.

But something was watching.

Below them, far in the distance, was their destination: Kaldrith Hollow, a mountain-bound enclave rumored to guard the last unclaimed leyline fork in the northern spires. But Aiden hadn't come for the leyline.

He came for the gate sealed beneath it.

The one only the Shardbound could open.

That Night – Ridge Campfire

Torran sat with his back to the cliff wall, trying not to look into the void below. The fire was small, crackling more from stubbornness than strength.

"You've been quiet since Vel'Serin," he said.

Aiden didn't respond at first.

Then: "I think I'm starting to remember more than I lived."

Torran tilted his head. "You mean from your old life?"

"No. From the lives I never had."

He held out his hand. A flicker of Echoforge summoned a blade shaped like one he'd never touched before. Elegant. Curved. A dueling saber from a timeline where he'd been a noble first, mage second.

"I don't even know who this Aiden was," he said. "But I know how to kill with his weapon."

"You're scared," Torran said.

Aiden looked at him.

"I'm used to being scared. This is something worse."

"Which is?"

"I'm starting to feel what they felt. These other selves. Their victories. Their losses. Their grief. Like it's mine."

Torran went silent.

Then he asked the only question that mattered.

"Can you still tell which one is you?"

Aiden looked back at the fire.

"For now."

Elsewhere – The Hollow Choir Responds

Far from the mountain, in a cathedral without walls, thirteen figures stood in silent formation. Their bodies flickered—each a blend of features, masks, eyes, lives not meant to meet.

The central figure—tall, robed in ash-veined white—lifted their hand.

A single word echoed across fractured space:

"Converging."

The others began to sing.

Thirteen voices in perfect dissonance.

Calling back the Aiden they claimed as kin.

Aiden didn't know it yet.

But the next gate wouldn't just lead forward.

It would lead into himself.
