The days felt longer without Zayden around, as Riley navigated her way through the maze of new realities and hidden dangers. Each time she stepped onto the school grounds, she felt like an outsider, exposed in a world where everyone seemed to know more than she did.
Her classes had become a blur, a constant stream of teachers and students that seemed to pass by in slow motion. But it wasn't the schoolwork that weighed on her mind; it was the looming threat she couldn't escape, the feeling that danger was just around the corner, watching her every move.
She had always prided herself on being independent, on being able to take care of herself. But now, for the first time in her life, she felt helpless. Every shadow seemed to hide a threat, every person she passed could be an enemy in disguise. The walls she had carefully built around herself were slowly crumbling, and she wasn't sure how much longer she could hold on.
A Dangerous Encounter
It was during one of her late-night walks around the school that Riley felt the first true sting of fear. She had been on her way back from the library, her head buried in a book, trying to ignore the nagging anxiety in her chest. The campus was quieter than usual, and the soft rustle of the leaves in the trees only seemed to amplify the stillness around her.
Then, she heard it.
Footsteps. Quick, deliberate, and too close. She froze, her body stiffening as her senses sharpened.
Riley turned around, her heart pounding in her chest, but there was no one there. Just the darkened hallway ahead of her, the empty shadows of the campus stretching out in every direction.
A chill ran down her spine. Her instincts were screaming at her, telling her to move, to run—but her feet were frozen to the ground. She couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her, lurking just beyond her reach.
"Riley…"
The voice was low, smooth, and far too familiar. Her breath hitched, and she quickly turned to face the person who had appeared behind her, stepping from the shadows with a smirk that made her stomach twist.
It was Lukas, one of Zayden's friends. His handsome face was partially illuminated by the soft glow of the streetlights, and though his smile seemed harmless, there was something dangerous lurking behind his eyes.
"What are you doing here?" Riley's voice was sharp, her hands instinctively balling into fists.
"I was looking for you," Lukas said casually, stepping closer. "I wanted to see how you were holding up."
Riley didn't buy his calm demeanor. She knew that under the surface, Lukas was more than he seemed. He wasn't just another wealthy playboy like Zayden. There was a darkness in him, something Riley hadn't yet figured out but knew she should fear.
"I'm fine," she replied, taking a step back, but Lukas didn't let her move far. His gaze lingered on her with an intensity that made her skin crawl.
"You know, Riley," he said, his voice suddenly colder, "you don't have to be so tough all the time. It's okay to be scared. You should be."
Riley's heart skipped a beat. She didn't understand what he was implying, but she could feel the danger in his words. Before she could react, Lukas reached out and grabbed her wrist, his grip tightening just enough to send a sharp warning through her body.
"I'm not afraid of you, Lukas," she snapped, pulling her arm out of his grip.
"Oh, but you should be," he said, his smile never fading, but his eyes narrowed dangerously. "You have no idea what's really going on, do you? You're playing a game that you're not even prepared for. And soon enough, you'll learn that Zayden can't always protect you."
His words sent a jolt of fear through her, but before she could respond, Lukas let out a soft laugh and turned away. "I'll see you around, Riley," he said, walking into the shadows, disappearing just as quickly as he had appeared.
Riley stood there, her heart racing, her body still tense. What had he meant by that? And why did she feel like she had just narrowly avoided something much worse than a casual encounter?
A Call for Help
As the days passed, Riley couldn't shake the feeling that Lukas's words had been a warning—a threat disguised as casual conversation. And while she tried to convince herself that it was just a scare tactic, a part of her knew that there was more to the story.
She couldn't help but wonder if Zayden had known about Lukas's true nature all along. Was that why he'd told her to stay out of trouble? Why hadn't he said anything about the other dangers she might face?
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her phone buzzing on the desk. Riley glanced down to see an unknown number, but for some reason, she felt a strange pull to answer.
"Hello?" she said cautiously.
"Riley…" Zayden's voice came through the line, low and urgent. "Where are you? You need to leave the school grounds now. It's not safe anymore."
Riley's heart stopped. "What? Zayden, what's going on?"
"Just trust me," he said, his voice thick with tension. "Get out of there, now. Don't ask questions. Just go. I'll meet you soon."
Before she could say anything else, the line went dead. Riley stood there for a moment, holding the phone in her hand, unsure of what to do. But one thing was certain—Zayden wasn't just worried for her. He was terrified.
She didn't have time to waste.
With no hesitation, Riley grabbed her bag and rushed out of her dorm room, her heart pounding in her chest as she made her way toward the exit. The night air felt colder now, the weight of Zayden's warning settling heavily on her. She had no idea what she was walking into, but one thing was clear—nothing about her life was normal anymore.
And soon, she'd have to face the consequences of the world she had unknowingly entered.
