Chapter 20 - chapter 19

Chapter 19 – The Ones Who Remember

"Rebellion doesn't die. It just waits for a name worth rising for."

Smoke curled like mourning veils over the fractured capital. Broken temples smoldered. Statues of gods lay in pieces, some still bleeding light.

Kaien sat alone on the edge of the ruined skybridge, legs dangling over a hundred-foot drop. His left arm hung limp, still scorched from the divine clash. Fellchain rested beside him, whispering like a tired beast.

Riven finally caught up. "You're insane."

Kaien didn't reply.

"You realize what you just did?" Riven pressed. "You wounded a Tyrant and walked away. Do you know what that means?"

Kaien stood. "It means they'll come in numbers next time."

---

Far below, in the Undercity—beyond the golden glow of the gods' sanctuaries—figures began to move.

Old robes. Scarred armor. Dusty weapons once thought ceremonial.

A man with no eyes lit a flame with his breath.

A woman with celestial tattoos gouged out one of them.

A hooded child whispered, "He's returned. The chainbearer walks."

They stood in a circle.

> "After centuries," one muttered, "a Heavenbreaker rises."

They bowed not to a god, but to a name echoing in ash: Kaien Valis.

---

As Kaien and Riven moved through the wreckage, they were met by a stranger in a black blindfold, his body covered in faded divine brands.

> "You carry the cursed blade."

Kaien narrowed his eyes. "And?"

The man knelt.

> "We've waited for you. The ones who remember."

Riven pulled a knife. "This a cult thing?"

The man rose. "A rebellion."

Kaien stepped closer. "What do you want?"

> "To serve. To burn the citadels. To remind the gods that their time is over."

---

Quick cuts of ancient murals. A young boy with eyes of flame. An army marching through the sky. A broken chain lying in a god's palm.

Then—silence.

Then—Kaien's eyes flash open in the present.

"Who was the first Heavenbreaker?" he asks.

The blindfolded man smiles. "You wear his soul. But you are not him."

Kaien's voice turned sharp. "Then what am I?"

> "You're the one that finishes it."

---

That night, Kaien meets the faction in the old catacombs. Fifty strong. Maybe more in the shadows.

Each one once branded a traitor. Each one scarred by divinity. Each one ready to rise again.

> They call themselves The Remnants.

A young girl steps forward and offers Kaien a tattered black banner. One that once flew above a godless army.

"Take it," she says. "Make the skies tremble again."

Kaien stares at it, eyes unreadable.

Then—

He takes it.
