As i got up from the rags we had put on the ground so i didnt sleep on the cold floor, i scratched my head, looking outside at the sun, rising over, seeing upon us. I didn't know, i didnt want to know. How did all of this happen? Why did it happen? Are the gods trying to test us? Or have they lost faith in us?
My thought is erupted by Matilda's awaking. "Good morning" She says. I turn around and face her "Good morning as well" I answer awkwardly. It had been over a year since i had talked to someone and i felt shy, thinking i was Inferior to her.
After a bit we both got up and dressed up in our casual clothes. Not really something complicated but it worked fine. I had told her before to pack everything because we better get going.
After eating something we found in the pantry we started to head to the house. Leaving the apartment complex carefully, we didnt want to find out if there were any creatures in there. But it went well and we made it to the abandoned and lonely roads. If i had woken up any earlier they may have been filled with those creatures.
I thought to myself, is it alright for me to live while all the others died? Is it right?
My line of thought got broken by Matilda. "So, i wanna know a bit more about you since we will be living together. But, let me tell you about myself first. Im Matilda as you know, im also interested in football and basketball. Oh, i also worked at a convenience store when the apocalypse didnt break out"
As i listened i noted everything in my mind, wanting to keep a close connection around us.
"Well, im John as you know. The past year i was in a coma and i woke up after the outbreak of the creatures. I dont remember much from before but I remember i liked Rugby" She nodded and kept walking.
After a bit we reach a split on the roads. One side saying a random place and the other side had a sign that said "Military checkpoint 10Km". I pointed it out and she replied "You wanna check it out? It will probably two or three hours if we hurry" I nodded and we started walking there.
After some time we reached the entrance of the military checkpoint. "Hello? Anybody here?" I said, trying to find if anybody was here. The place looked abandoned, blood splattered all over the floors yet no bodies were found.
As we walked inside we found nobody. No creatures meant the place was safe but the place lacked the presence of humans. I brushed it off and we kept walking until we reached the main place around there. It had some military equipment like firearms and gear like bulletproof vest.
"We should gear up" I suggest and she nods. We walked over to the tent with a little sign indicating it as the armory. As we open the door it reveals the inside of the tent. It was really dark and you couldnt see inside.
I grab a flashlight but before i could get it out Matilda rushed inside, thinking it was safe. After that i lost sight of her due to the lack of brightness.
"What are you doing?!" I yelled. "Get out!" But before she could respond i just heard her screech.
"HELP!" She said...
I finally pulled out the flashlight and as i turned it on i saw two creatures on her, one eating her intestines, the other eating her arm. The first one had already dug its teeth inside her stomach, working its way down to her intestines. The other one had already cut off her arm completely, starting to eat the other.
I held my vomit, swallowing it in my mouth. I looked around the armory and i found a rifle on a box. I grabbed it and removed the mag. I had military experience and this felt like muscle memory.
As i placed the magazine back to the rifle i started to unload on the creature. Bullet casings dropping to the floor. After the magazine stops feeding, everything went quiet. The silence was deafening.
I walked over to her and she raised her remaining hand, barely hanging on the bone. "K-Kill me" she said. I looked at her, looked at my rifle, and back at her. I started searching the armory for a sole bullet to put end to her suffering, finding one in another box.
I put it in the chamber and walk over to her, in tears. "I-Im so sorry..." I said, mentally torn apart. I pointed the barrel to her head, released the safety and pulled the trigger.
A loud bang fills the room, i opened my eyes and i saw her head. It wasnt a head anymore, just everything inside splattered on the ground.
I vomitted at the sight, thinking that this is vile. I just killed a person... Im sick...
