Chapter 1 - 1st Petal

At Bright Hospitals – Thailand

"Mmm… now let's try moving your hand a little. That's much better, right? If we keep up with the medication for a few more days, your hand will fully recover."

Speaking gently to a boy who looked around 15 years old, Dr. Hasith carefully adjusted the medical report in his hand.

"Dr. Hasith! Dr. Hasith! You need to come to the emergency room immediately. There's been an accident. One of the patients is in critical condition."

The nurse who rushed in brought everything to a halt. Hasith dropped everything and ran toward the Emergency Unit—because even a second's delay could cost a patient their life. By the time he got there, his assistant Malith was already preparing to start surgery.

"Hasith, the patient's condition is serious. This surgery might take at least three hours," Malith said while reviewing the patient's reports.

Hasith rushed to grab the surgical kit—but the moment he saw the patient's face, he froze in shock.

"Hirunya..."

That name slipped from Hasith's lips like a prayer, barely audible. His coffee-brown eyes welled up with tears as he stared at the face that once meant everything to him. The one and only love of his life lay before him on a hospital bed—barely clinging to life.

"Hasith, both her lungs have been pierced by a metal rod. There are still fragments inside her body, according to the scan report. We need to operate immediately."

Even as Malith lowered his head over the scan results and spoke, Hasith couldn't hear a word. He stood frozen, unresponsive. When Malith looked up again, he saw Hasith sitting on the floor, head cradled between his knees. The nurses were too focused on the patient to notice. Malith knelt down beside him and gently lifted his face—only to see tears streaming from those shaken eyes.

"Hasith… bro… what's going on? Do you know him? Say something, man. You just sitting here like this—don't you realize how risky this is for his life?"

Even after trying to talk him through it, Hasith didn't respond. Malith finally shouted.

"It's him, Malith. My Hirunya."

Hasith's voice trembled. He had seen worse injuries before—far worse. But Hirunya… no, He was never someone who would end up like this. To see him like this—struggling to breathe on a hospital bed—it felt like the entire world had stopped spinning.

"Is he… the reason you came back from Sri Lanka?"

Malith asked, gripping Hasith's hand. Hasith slowly nodded.

Malith was about to ask more, but a nurse interrupted.

"Doctor, the patient's BP is dropping."

Malith looked at Hasith. They had to do this surgery. But with Hasith in this mental state, letting him into the operating room would be a gamble. Still, Malith leaned in and spoke from his heart.

"Hasith, I know you're breaking inside right now. I get it. But you have to be strong—right now, more than ever. If you want to save him, you have to focus. His life is literally in your hands. Every second you waste puts him in more danger. So get up, bro."

Hasith took in every word. Because Malith was right. And so, Hasith stood up.

He was trembling—like a fish thrown back into water. But still, he walked over, grabbed the surgical tools.

Malith gave a quick smile and stood ready beside him.

"Ok, Doctor Hasith De Silva. Let's do this."
