Chapter 1 - The Gaming Graveyard

February 19, 2027, 1:32 AM

The dimly lit room was a testament to the devastating consequences of an all-night gaming marathon. The air reeked of stale pizza, stagnant beer, and the sweet, sweet aroma of desperation. Amidst this chaotic landscape, a young warrior sat poised, his fingers flying across the controller with the ferocity of a pianist in the midst of a symphony.

Mack Thorne, a 20-year-old gaming aficionado, was a man on a mission. His brown, messy hair seemed to be styled by the frantic fingers of a thousand frustrated gamers. His well-sculpted face, which would have been handsome if not for the dark, baggy circles under his eyes, was set in a determined grimace. The heavy circles resembled two miniature moon craters, a testament to the countless nights he'd spent conquering virtual worlds.

As he played, the sounds of rapid button-mashing filled the room – "Pa ta pa pa" – a staccato symphony that echoed through the desolate landscape of pizza boxes, beer cans, and discarded snack wrappers. The room was a graveyard of gastronomic excess, a monument to the devastating consequences of a gaming binge.

A half-eaten pizza slice lay on top of the round table, its congealed cheese resembling a miniature, edible autopsy. Cans of alcohol littered the floor, a testament to Mack's failed attempts to dull the pain of his gaming frustrations. The walls, once a proud, gleaming white, now seemed to sag under the weight of neglect, their surfaces adorned with faded posters of Mack's gaming heroes.

In this chaotic, dystopian landscape, Mack sat, poised, his eyes fixed intently on the TV screen as he battled his way through the virtual realm of "Eternal Realms."

A game surrounded by hype that had been palpable, with gamers worldwide eagerly anticipating its release. The game's teaser trailers had racked up millions of views on YouTube, and its social media accounts were flooded with excited fans. And when it finally dropped, the game exceeded expectations, boasting breathtaking cut scenes, stunning graphics, and an unforgettable soundtrack that rivaled the greatest film scores. The open-world RPG sim game allowed players to choose from 60 unique characters, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and intricate backstories.

But just like every rose has its thorns, "Eternal Realms" had a flaw – a flaw that would leave players scratching their heads, wondering if the devs had been playing a cruel joke on them. The game's ending was a topic of heated debate, with some players claiming that the only way to achieve victory was through sacrifice – sacrifice of loved ones, allies, and even the player's own character.

Online forums and social media platforms were flooded with complaints and discussions:

_GamingForum123:_ "I swear, I've played through this game five times, and each ending is more depressing than the last. Is there seriously no happy ending? Did the devs just want to troll us?"

_EternalRealmsFan4Life:_ "I've tried every character, every path, every decision. It's always the same – sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice. I'm starting to think the devs hate us. Like, what's the point of even playing if you can't get a happy ending?"

_TrollMcTrollface:_ "Lol, you guys are just bad at the game. I'm sure there's a happy ending, you're just too stupid to find it."

_GamingPro22:_ "Dude, I've seen the code, I've talked to the devs. They said there's a happy ending, but it's ridiculously hard to achieve. They left clues throughout all the arcs of the game. We just have to find them."

_EternalRealmsDevTeam:_ "Ah, the eternal question – is there a happy ending? Well, we'll never tell... or will we? Let's just say that the truth is hidden in plain sight. Keep playing, keep searching, and maybe – just maybe – you'll find the secret to a happy ending."

The debate raged on, with some players defending the game's design and others calling for a patch or DLC to add a more positive conclusion. Some fans even started a petition, begging the devs to reconsider the ending.

Mack, however, was too engrossed in his own gaming session to worry about the ending. He was determined to conquer "Eternal Realms," no matter the cost.

His fingers danced across the controller, a blur of movement, as he willed his character, Justin Bridge, onward.

The clock on the wall seemed to mock him, its glowing red digits flashing 2:43 AM like a cruel, heartless sentinel. Mack's mom would kill him if she knew he was still up, gaming away. But Mack couldn't help himself. He was on a mission to conquer this game.

After few battles and curses later

the "Game Over" screen stared back at him, Mack's face contorted in a mixture of frustration and disgust. "Ahh!! Fuck!!" he exclaimed, slamming his fist onto the armrest. "How could I lose to that third-rate villain, Edward Kravitz? I'm Justin Bridge, the chosen one, the hero of this damn game!"

He glared at his thumbs, as if they were the traitors responsible for his downfall. "You're supposed to be my trusty sidekicks, not my Achilles' heel! What's wrong with you, thumbs? Can't you see I'm trying to save the world here?"

Mack let out a deep sigh, shaking his head. "I guess I'm just not cut out for this whole hero business." He switched off his console, and the TV screen went dark. The silence was a welcome respite from the chaos of the game.

As he jumped onto his bed, the mattress creaked in protest. Mack collapsed onto the pillows, feeling the weight of his defeat settle in. His eyelids grew heavy, and he let out a soft yawn. "Time to call it a night, I guess."

As Mack's eyelids grew heavier, he let out a soft snore, surrendering to the exhaustion that had been building up all night.

Suddenly the TV screen flickered back to life, casting an eerie blue glow over the room. But Mack was oblivious to it all, fast asleep and lost in a world of dreams.

The TV screen displayed a glitchy message: "Initializing... Reality Shift... Please Stand By..." The words danced across the screen, taunting the empty room with their cryptic meaning.

The shadows in the room seemed to grow longer and darker, as if they were being manipulated by some unseen force. The air was thick with an eerie, anticipatory silence, like the moment before a storm breaks.

And then, without warning, the TV screen went dark once more, plunging the room into silence. But the darkness was short-lived, as a faint humming noise began to build in intensity, filling the room with an otherworldly energy...
