Chapter 67 - Chapter 67: The Price of Power

Fred sat in his small, dimly lit apartment, staring at the envelope Mia had given him. The silence in the room felt suffocating. He had to open it. He knew that whatever lay inside was going to be the key to everything—his survival, his escape, or perhaps his downfall. The weight of it pressed against his chest, his hands trembling as he tore it open.

Inside, there was a simple card, black with silver lettering. It had no name, no signature, just an address and a time.

Meet me at the Docks. Midnight. Come alone.

His breath caught in his throat. The Docks? The last place anyone would want to go. A place that was known for its shady deals, where the line between the law and criminals blurred. But it wasn't just any place—it was a place Fred had never dared to visit, a place that reeked of danger, where only those desperate for something, or those with nothing to lose, went.

He couldn't back out now. Mia had made it clear—this was the way forward. No second chances. No room for hesitation.

---

Fred arrived at the docks just before midnight. The fog hung thick in the air, the stench of saltwater mixing with the faint scent of decay. He could hear the creaking of old ships and the distant sound of water lapping against the concrete. The place looked abandoned, yet something about the atmosphere made his skin crawl.

The moonlight barely pierced the fog, casting long shadows across the darkened warehouse buildings. As Fred walked, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched, his every step calculated by unseen eyes. The place felt like it belonged to another world, a world where rules were made to be broken.

He reached the designated spot—a small, rusted shack near the farthest edge of the docks. As he approached, he noticed a figure standing in the shadows, their face obscured by a hood. Fred's heart raced as he stopped in his tracks.

"Fred," the voice came, low and deliberate. "I see you've come."

It was a woman, but her voice held a strange, eerie calmness to it, as though she were speaking from a place where emotions didn't exist.

"I've come," Fred responded, his voice steady despite the unease gnawing at him. "What do you want from me?"

The woman stepped closer, her figure illuminated by a faint light from a nearby lamp. She was tall, with long dark hair cascading down her back. Her features were sharp and cold, her eyes piercing through Fred like she could see straight into his soul. There was something familiar about her, but Fred couldn't place it.

"My name is Selene," she said. "And you, Fred, have caught the attention of people who don't take kindly to being ignored."

Fred's brow furrowed in confusion. "Who are you talking about?"

"The ones who control this city," Selene replied, her voice carrying a hint of amusement. "You thought this was all just high school politics, didn't you? The drama, the power games... It's all a distraction. A facade."

Fred's pulse quickened. His mind raced to catch up with what she was saying. "The people who control the city...?"

"Yes," she answered. "The elite, the ones who sit behind closed doors, pulling the strings. They make the rules, they control the wealth, the power... They decide who lives and who dies."

Fred swallowed hard. This was bigger than he could have ever imagined.

"And Ronan?" Fred asked, his voice tinged with the desperation that had begun to creep in. "What does he have to do with this?"

Selene's lips curled into a smile, but it wasn't a comforting one. "Ronan is a tool. Just a pawn in the larger game. But you, Fred, you have something they need. You don't even know it yet."

---

Fred's mind was spinning, but Selene's words had an eerie clarity to them. She wasn't telling him everything, but she was offering him something he couldn't afford to ignore.

"You want me to do something for you?" Fred asked, his voice hoarse.

Selene nodded slowly, her eyes narrowing. "I want you to become a part of this world, Fred. A part of the game. You've already started, whether you like it or not. But now, you can choose. You can sit back and let the world crush you, or you can take control of your own fate."

She took a step forward, closing the distance between them. "All you have to do is play the game. Help us uncover the secrets, expose the corruption. Help us bring the system to its knees. But be warned—this path comes with a price. It's not a game you can simply walk away from once you're in."

Fred's heart raced. What was she asking of him? What kind of power was she offering?

"You want me to betray everything I've ever known," he said, his voice shaking. "To fight against the people I've trusted... all for what?"

Selene's smile deepened, her expression becoming more enigmatic. "Power, Fred. Money. A life where you're no longer a pawn, but a king. It's up to you."

Fred stood frozen, the weight of her words settling over him. He had never asked for this. He had never wanted to be a part of this world. But now, it seemed like there was no way out.

---

As the night dragged on, Fred stood at the crossroads of his life. Everything he thought he knew about the world was about to be shattered. He could already feel the pull of the game, the lure of the power and wealth that Selene was promising him.

But deep down, Fred knew the truth. Once he took this first step, there would be no going back. He would have to navigate the dangerous waters of this world, where loyalty was a fleeting concept, and betrayal was a constant companion.

"Do we have a deal?" Selene asked, her voice cold as ice.

Fred's heart pounded in his chest. He took a deep breath, his mind racing with the consequences of his choice. He had always been an introvert, someone who kept to the sidelines, but now, he was being thrust into a world where everything he knew was up for grabs.

"Yes," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'll play the game."

Selene's smile grew wider, her eyes gleaming with a cold satisfaction. "Good. Then let's begin."

---

As Fred walked away from the docks, his mind was in turmoil. He had just made a deal with someone who was as dangerous as they were powerful. But now, there was no turning back.

In the days to come, Fred would find himself drawn deeper into the world of corruption and power. He would discover more secrets, more lies, more enemies. But most of all, he would learn that there was no such thing as innocence in a game where the stakes were life and death.

The real battle was only just beginning.
