Chapter 2 – A Voice in the Silence
I don't remember when I started walking. Or why I never stopped. Maybe because if I stopped… I'd start thinking. And if I started thinking, I'd start remembering — everything. Who I used to be. And who I am… now. The ground beneath my feet is soft, but not wet.
The scent of this forest isn't like any forest I've known. No damp soil. No rotting carcasses. Only a strange aroma — like the smell of ozone after a storm… mixed with burnt metal? Strange. But not painful. In fact… soothing.
My steps are slow.
Deliberate. I'm giving myself space — to understand, or at least, to accept. This world feels too alive. Too vivid. And yet, too silent. No voices. No machines. Just me… and the voice I keep buried in my chest. A small voice in my head — not from the HUD — whispers:
"You're not supposed to be here."
I know.
But I also know… I don't belong there anymore either. So I keep walking. Ahead, there's a break in the canopy. Sunlight or something like it, slips between the leaves. But its color is different. A deep golden hue, tinged with green at the edges. Not blinding. In fact, cool. Like a sun that never knew anger.
I reach a clearing. There's a small lake. Its water is clear — too clear — I can see the reflection of the sky from the lakebed. As if the world above and below are merging. I sit at the edge. Stare into my reflection.
Young.
A face I forgot I once had. But these eyes… are still mine. Eyes that know what failure feels like. What silence feels like. What it means… to live without purpose.
[Sync in Progress… 11.2%]
A screen appears, slowly. Floating, silent. Like a whisper from the system, careful not to disturb. But it still watches.
[Emotion Signature: Residual Sadness Detected]
[Recommended Action: Rest | Recall | Recalibrate]
Three options. But no timer. No pressure to choose. I like that. This system doesn't force. It only… suggests. I choose the middle one.
Recall.
A hazy image appears before me. Like a hologram — faint, not solid. I see my room, the broken chair. The dusty desk. A dim computer screen. The veilbreak.sys file blinking silently. And then… the voice.
"Welcome home."
My reflection — reversed — smiling with hollow eyes. I shiver slightly. But this time, I don't push the memory away. I let it come. Let it flow, like a river that never stops. Because maybe… this is how I begin to understand. How I keep going.

The screen disappears, gently. I look up. The sky feels brighter now. Or maybe… I'm starting to see its true colors? A small bird glides low over the lake. Its wings shimmer like crystal. But they leave no shadow. Behind it… the air shimmers briefly. Like a glitch. But organic. That's when I realize something.
This world isn't glitching. It's meant to be this way. As if its reality was built on shifting logic. And me — maybe I'm just a guest.
Or maybe… a virus?
"I want to know," I whisper to myself. "What are you, veilbreak.sys?" I didn't expect an answer. But the system replies.

[Reminder: Not All Eyes See the Same Truth]
I read the last line twice. Not All Eyes See the Same Truth. My heart beats slow. But deep. I know… that phrase wasn't just system flavor text. It was a message. A warning. Or maybe… a clue.
The sun moves slowly. Or maybe it's the world that's moving. I rise slowly from the lake's edge. Exhale deeply. And for the first time since I arrived here… My steps feel like they have direction. I don't know where to yet. But at least, I don't feel empty anymore.

I smile, just a little. "I don't know who I am in this world… but maybe that doesn't matter." I clench my fist. Feel the strength in my fingers. In my muscles. In my heart. Because this time…
I won't waste this second chance.
