Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 – “The Long Con”

The masked figure's words hung in the air like a taunt, their presence pressing down on the room. Aiden's grip tightened on his gun, but he didn't pull the trigger. Not yet. He was calculating, always calculating, but the puzzle pieces were shifting too rapidly.

Sophie stood frozen, her instincts screaming to act, but she knew better than to rush in blindly. The masked figure's calm demeanor made her wary, and the sense of danger in the room felt like an unseen current, waiting to drag them under.

The figure finally spoke again, their voice laced with a dark amusement. "You don't even know the game you're playing, do you? Voss isn't the enemy here. Not anymore."

Aiden's eyes narrowed. He wasn't one to take threats lightly, especially ones laced with such cryptic meaning. "Then who is?"

The masked figure took a step closer, their silhouette casting an imposing shadow in the dim light. "You've been looking in the wrong direction, Aiden. The strings you've been pulling... they belong to someone far more powerful than you realize."

Sophie's hand clenched around her weapon, but Aiden's calm voice stopped her before she could make any rash decisions. "You think we're here to play your game. You've got it all wrong. We're here for answers."

The figure cocked their head slightly. "Answers? The truth you seek is a lie. Everyone has their role to play, even you."

Sophie couldn't hold back any longer. "Enough of the riddles! Who are you, and what do you want with us?"

The figure seemed to consider the question for a long moment, and then, as though they'd been waiting for Sophie to speak, they finally lowered their hands, revealing their face. The mask came off with an almost theatrical flourish, and the face beneath it sent a shock through both of them.

It was a woman — tall, strikingly beautiful, with sharp features and cold eyes. Her hair was dark, swept back in a sleek ponytail, and she wore an expression of detached amusement, as if she were enjoying a show rather than the dangerous situation unfolding.

"Ava," Aiden muttered under his breath, his mind racing to place the name.

The woman smiled, though it was devoid of warmth. "I see you remember me, Aiden. How touching."

Sophie felt the blood drain from her face. "Ava?" she repeated. "The Ava?"

Aiden's gaze flicked to Sophie, but before he could explain, Ava continued, her voice dripping with irony. "The same Ava who orchestrated the downfall of your precious organization. The same Ava who left you all in ruins. I didn't think I needed to reintroduce myself. After all, you two have always been part of the bigger picture."

Sophie's pulse raced. The pieces were coming together, but it was almost too much to absorb at once. Ava was no longer just a name from their past. She was part of this twisted web. And what she was saying… it didn't make sense. How could they have missed this?

"Don't look so shocked," Ava said, her voice mocking as she took another step forward. "Voss is nothing more than a pawn in the game. A pawn I've been guiding for a long time. And you? You've been nothing more than a distraction."

Sophie's mind was reeling. The realization hit her like a hammer — this entire mission, all their efforts to dismantle Voss's operation, had been part of a larger plan. They weren't playing the game. They were being played.

Aiden took a step forward, his expression hardening. "You've been manipulating us this whole time. Why?"

Ava's lips curved into a faint smile, her eyes glinting with an unsettling mix of pride and cruelty. "Why not? You two were always useful. And now, you've served your purpose. The game is over."

Sophie's mind spun, but one thing was clear — they had underestimated Ava. She wasn't just another player; she was the one pulling the strings behind the scenes. And now, they were caught in her web.

Aiden's voice was cold as he spoke again. "You've been controlling everything, haven't you? All this time, you've been manipulating both sides."

Ava's smile widened, as though she'd been waiting for him to figure it out. "Exactly. The world you see is nothing more than an illusion. A carefully crafted one, where everyone plays their role. Voss was the bait, but now that you've destroyed him, I'm the one left standing. I've been moving my pieces in place for years. You think you're the ones who've been calling the shots? You've been nothing more than pawns."

The weight of her words hung heavily in the room. Sophie couldn't comprehend how deep the deception ran. All their efforts had been for nothing. Ava had always been a step ahead, always in control.

But there was one thing Sophie couldn't ignore. If Ava was behind all of this, she had to have a weakness. Everyone did.

Aiden's eyes met Sophie's, a silent understanding passing between them. They couldn't let Ava win. Not like this.

"Why are you telling us this?" Sophie demanded. "If you've already won, what do you need from us?"

Ava's gaze flicked toward her, her lips curling into a smirk. "I'm not telling you for your benefit. I'm telling you because it's over. You were never meant to survive this. But don't worry. You'll have a front-row seat to watch everything burn. You'll be the last to fall, and you'll know exactly who's behind it all."

Aiden tensed, his jaw clenching. "We won't let you get away with this."

Ava's laughter was soft but chilling. "You think you still have a chance? You were already dead the moment you walked into my game."

Without another word, she turned on her heel and walked toward the window, her silhouette framed by the fading light of the setting sun. "Goodbye, Aiden. Sophie. Don't make this harder than it needs to be."

Sophie's breath caught in her throat. "What do you mean by that?"

Ava glanced over her shoulder one last time, her eyes glinting with cold malice. "You'll see soon enough. The endgame is coming. And you're in the center of it."

With that, she disappeared from view, leaving Aiden and Sophie standing in the middle of the room, the weight of her words sinking in. They were no longer chasing shadows. They had become part of a game far larger than they could have imagined.

And now, there was no turning back.
