Synopsis
He’s not a mage. He’s a physicist. When MIT quantum expert Alan Chen wakes up in a world ruled by magic, he doesn’t panic—he builds. Soundwaves to shatter spells. Electromagnetism to bend lightning. While sorcerers chant, he calculates. But the deeper he digs, the more he finds: this world’s “magic” hides equations, lies—and something watching from the void. He came to survive. Now he’s rewriting the laws of reality. Science isn’t dead here. It’s just getting started.

Chapter 1 - Quantum Disruption (1/3)

Dr. Alan Chen adjusted his glasses and stared at the complex array of equipment surrounding him. The basement laboratory at MIT was silent save for the gentle hum of machinery and the occasional beep from monitoring systems. It was nearly midnight, but time had little meaning when he was deep in his work.

"Just a few more calibrations," he muttered to himself, fingers dancing across the keyboard. The holographic display above his workstation showed a three-dimensional model of wave patterns, their elegant oscillations hypnotic in the dim light.

At thirty-two, Alan was already a respected name in quantum physics. His theories on wave manipulation had earned him both acclaim and skepticism from the scientific community. Tonight, he was attempting to prove his most controversial hypothesis: that consciousness itself could influence quantum wave functions at a distance.

The experiment was simple in concept but fiendishly complex in execution. A quantum particle would be placed in superposition, and Alan would attempt to influence its collapse through focused thought patterns, all while monitoring the specific wave frequencies emitted during the process.

"System check complete. Quantum coherence at ninety-eight percent," announced the computerized voice of his lab assistant program. "Ready to initiate primary sequence."

Alan took a deep breath. Three years of research, countless grant applications, and his academic reputation all hinged on the next few minutes. He had replicated the experiment dozens of times with promising results, but tonight he had pushed the parameters further than ever before.

"Initiate sequence," he commanded, his voice steady despite the flutter of excitement in his chest.

The machinery around him hummed louder as power flowed through the system. In the center of the lab, a reinforced chamber housed the quantum apparatus—a marvel of engineering that had cost most of his research budget. Inside, a single particle was being coaxed into a state of superposition, existing in multiple states simultaneously.

Alan closed his eyes, focusing his thoughts as he had practiced. The theory was that consciousness, at its most fundamental level, was itself a wave function that could interact with other quantum systems. If he could prove this interaction was measurable and reproducible, it would revolutionize both physics and neuroscience.

The monitors around him displayed a cascade of data as the experiment progressed. Everything was proceeding exactly as planned.

Until it wasn't.

The first indication that something was wrong came when the lights flickered. Alan opened his eyes, frowning at the unexpected power fluctuation. The backup generators should have prevented any interruption.

"System anomaly detected," the computer announced, its synthesized voice somehow conveying urgency. "Unknown energy signature interfering with quantum field."

Alan's fingers flew across the keyboard, trying to identify the source of the interference. The wave pattern display was showing configurations he had never seen before—complex, almost organic patterns that shouldn't have been possible according to his models.

"What the hell?" he whispered, watching as the quantum coherence readings spiked to impossible levels. "Computer, emergency shutdown protocol!"

"Unable to comply. Quantum entanglement expanding beyond containment parameters."

A high-pitched whine filled the laboratory as the equipment struggled to handle the unexpected energy surge. The air itself seemed to thicken, and Alan felt a strange pressure building in his ears, like descending rapidly in an airplane.

The holographic display was now showing wave patterns that pulsed and swirled in three-dimensional space, almost as if they were alive. As Alan watched in a mixture of scientific fascination and growing alarm, the patterns began to coalesce into a swirling vortex of light directly above the quantum chamber.

"This is impossible," he breathed, even as his scientific mind raced to understand what he was witnessing. The vortex was growing, its edges reaching outward like tendrils of light. Where they touched equipment, the metal seemed to shimmer and become translucent.

Alan knew he should run, should get as far away from the laboratory as possible, but he couldn't tear himself away from the phenomenon unfolding before him. This was beyond anything in current scientific understanding—a discovery that could change everything.

He reached for his phone to record the event, but it was too late. A pulse of energy erupted from the vortex, washing over him in a wave that he felt rather than saw. The sensation was indescribable—as if every atom in his body was being gently pulled apart and reassembled in slightly different configurations.

The laboratory around him began to fade, the solid walls becoming transparent and then disappearing altogether. Alan felt himself falling, though in which direction he couldn't tell. The vortex of light expanded until it filled his entire field of vision, and then beyond, encompassing his very being.

His last coherent thought was that he should be terrified, but instead, he felt an almost serene curiosity. Whatever was happening, it was showing him aspects of reality he had only theorized about. If this was how his life ended, at least it was in pursuit of knowledge.

Then, darkness.
