Chapter 4 - Moonlight Reckoning

The moon hung low over Evergrave's shattered courtyard, a pale sentinel casting long, trembling shadows across broken battlements. Franklin stood at the edge of the rubble, the two freed children huddled safely behind Brenda's skirts. Their sobs had stilled, replaced by wide-eyed wonder at the night sky. But Franklin's gaze fixed on the figure in the darkness: Rebecca.

She emerged from the ruins in slow, deliberate steps, her cowl falling away to reveal eyes alight with wrath. The wind tugged at her midnight-black robes, revealing the jagged edge of Solorth's mark coiling along her wrist. Rebecca's smile was a knife's edge.

"Brother," she intoned, her voice carrying over the silent stones. I knew you would come.

Franklin's sword was in his hand before thought could catch him. He levelled its tip at her chest, the blade whispering cold steel. "Rebecca, this ends tonight. "Why have you allied with Solorth?"

Her laugh was brittle, echoing off crumbling walls. "Allied? No, Franklin. I have seized my birthright. You abandoned me when Father exiled me. You took immortality, leaving me to rot in shadows."

Brenda stepped between them, her hand trembling on Franklin's arm. "This wasn't her fight. She's lost, but we can save her."

Rebecca's eyes flicked to Brenda, then narrowed. "Save her? She is unborn, delicate. "Unlike you, brother, I did not cower." She raised a trembling hand, and a ripple of midnight energy snaked toward Brenda. Franklin lunged, intercepting with his sword, sparks crackling where magic met steel.

In a heartbeat, the courtyard erupted. Banji's banner, torn and bloodstained, fell at their feet as Banji himself stumbled through a broken archway, eyes wild. His crimson armor was cracked, his breath ragged.

Rebecca's focus shifted. "Ah, Banji. The tyrant returns. Are you here to reclaim your throne?"

Banji snarled, raising a ruined shield. "Sister, your meddling ends now." He squared his shoulders and charged.

Franklin's jaw clenched. He did not want Banji free, but this was not the time for old rivalries. He sheathed his sword with a single motion. "Stay back, Banji. This is between me and Rebecca."

Banji halted, panting. "You ceded power to her. Now she'll tear this kingdom apart."

Brenda caught Franklin's gaze and nodded. He turned back to Rebecca.

Rebecca's lips curled. "You two happy family reunion? "How quaint. She flicked her wrist, and a tendril of shadow lunged for Franklin's throat. He sidestepped, thrusting his sword into the cobblestone.

Lightning split the sky, and Rebecca flinched. Franklin moved in, blaming a silent promise. "I renounce Solorth's power to save you. I will break this curse or die trying."

Her laughter dissolved into sobs. "Break it? You cannot. "You never understood my pain." She dropped to her knees, sobbing. "I wanted vengeance, and Solorth gave me strength."

Franklin's heart seized. He lowered his sword. "Rebecca… come back with me. You are my sister."

She raised her trembling hands and pushed Franklin away. "I'm no one's sister. "I am Solorth's chosen." A bolt of dark energy slammed into the shattered fountain behind Brenda, its waters exploding skyward.

The children screamed and scrambled behind Brenda. Franklin spun, using his sword to shatter the falling debris. He rushed back to Rebecca, grabbing her arm. His grip was iron.

"Enough!" he roared. "I renounce Solorth's magic, but I will not abandon you." He placed a hand on her palm, willing the scarlet mark to dim.

For a moment, silence. Then Rebecca blinked, her magic flickering uncertainly.

From the castle keep, a thunderous roar answered them. Solorth's voice, deep and venomous, seeped into their bones: "Your mortal resolve is weak. Accept me, or drown in your fragile humanity."

Franklin's eyes burned. He looked at Banji, who stood frozen by the arch. "Banji! Help me!"

Banji shook his head, uncertain. "You will damn us all!"

Brenda moved to Franklin's side. "Rebecca listened to him. We can fight this together."

Rebecca trembled, tears carving tracks through soot-stained cheeks. I…

A crack split the courtyard as the stones shifted, the ground tilting beneath them. The cathedral tower above groaned, sending showers of debris cascading down. Franklin barred Rebecca's eyes from the falling stones with his free hand. "Move!" he yelled.

He gathered Rebecca's arms and pulled her toward the shattered fountain. Banji, rallying at last, charged alongside them, using magic to keep the path clear. Brenda shepherded the children to safety behind a collapsed wall.

They reached a walled alcove where the southern corridor led deeper into the keep. The air thrummed with residual wards barriers cast by Solorth's acolytes. Franklin tested them with his palm, feeling the pull of dark energy.

"We can't go back," he muttered. "Not yet." He turned to Banji and Rebecca. We need to seal Rebecca's bond. The second seal lies beneath the old palace crypt."

Rebecca stared at him, anguish and fear battling in her eyes. "And what then? You still betray me."

Franklin shook his head. "I will not leave you to Solorth." He glanced at Banji. "Will you stand with us?"

Banji's lips twisted. "I stood alone when you fled." "Yet I cannot let this kingdom fall." He bowed his head. "I will stand."

Rebecca's breath caught. She stared at Banji. "Why?"

Banji raised a cracked gauntlet and banged it against the arch's stone, "Because our people deserve a ruler who protects them. Not a goddess of vengeance."

Rebecca's expression wavered. She looked to Franklin, as if weighing a lifetime of abandonment against the promise of redemption. Then she lowered her gaze and placed her hand in Franklin's.

A pulse of warmth flared through Franklin's chest. For a moment, the courtyard stilled. Even the children quieted, watching.

Franklin ushered them into the keep's shadowed corridor. "This way. Quickly."

They walked in silence, every footstep heavy with memory. Banji led the children, his posture stiff but protective. Rebecca lingered by Franklin's side, her scars ghosting in torchlight. Brenda went up the rear, her eyes scanning for ambush.

The corridor opened onto a grand hall marble floors cracked, columns scorched by magic. At its far end, a spiral staircase coiled down into darkness.

"There," Franklin said. The palace crypt." He pointed down the steps, where ancient glyphs glowed with the promise of power.

Rebecca hesitated. "Once we break the seal, what then?"

Franklin's gaze was unwavering. "Then we end Solorth's hold on Evergrave, and we decide our fate together."

Her lips quivered. "I want to believe you."

Banji stepped forward. "Then we have no time to waste."

As they descended, the air grew colder, and the glyphs on the walls flickered between hope and despair. Franklin's hand brushed against the carved runes, and he felt the echo of the first seal's collapse deep within the stone.

Below, the faint glow of the second seal awaited an ember of promise in the darkness. Franklin drew a steady breath. Every heartbeat carried the weight of legacy, betrayal, and the fragile hope of redemption.

Above them, Evergrave quaked beneath Solorth's wrathful roar. But in the hush of the keep's hidden corridors, four figures, two brothers, a sister, and the steadfast Brenda, pressed onward. Their destinies are intertwined by blood, magic, and the relentless pursuit of salvation.

And in that silent descent, the true reckoning began.
