Chapter 13 - Echoes Of The Past

The forest was alive with whispers. Each rustle of leaves and distant call of nocturnal creatures seemed to carry secrets long buried. Nora and Kael moved silently, their footsteps muffled by the thick carpet of moss and fallen leaves.

"This path leads to the ancient ruins," Kael murmured, his voice barely audible over the ambient sounds. "It's said that the answers we seek lie within."

Nora nodded, determination etched on her face. The power she had awakened was just the beginning; understanding its origins was the next step.

As they approached the ruins, the air grew colder, and the trees gave way to crumbling stone structures overtaken by nature. Vines clung to the weathered walls, and the ground was littered with fragments of a bygone era.

Inside the largest structure, they discovered a chamber adorned with faded murals depicting figures wielding magic, their hands outstretched towards the heavens. At the center stood a pedestal similar to the one Nora had encountered before, but this one was cracked and dormant.

Kael examined the murals, his brow furrowed. "These depict the original bearers of the magic. They were guardians, protectors of balance."

Nora approached the pedestal, placing her hand gently upon it. A faint glow emanated from the cracks, and a soft hum filled the chamber. Visions flooded her mind—memories not her own.

She saw a woman, regal and powerful, casting a spell that bound a dark force. The spell required a sacrifice—a curse placed upon her lineage to contain the darkness. Nora gasped, pulling her hand back.

"It's my bloodline," she whispered. "The curse was a seal, a necessary burden to keep the darkness at bay."

Kael's eyes widened. "Then breaking the curse might unleash what it was meant to contain."

Nora's mind raced. The desire to be free of the curse clashed with the responsibility of keeping the darkness sealed. She looked at Kael, seeking solace in his presence.

"We need to find another way," she said firmly. "A way to lift the curse without releasing the darkness."
