Ava grinned mischievously. "I'm going to see Caleb."
Her mum and brother exchanged a knowing look, and Aiden teased, "Ooh, Caleb, huh? He must be pretty special, sis."
Ava blushed, laughing, and her mum chimed in, "Yes, Caleb's a nice boy. You two have fun, okay?"
With a smile and a wave, Ava headed out the door, leaving her mum and brother to their teasing grins.
Ava stood outside her boyfriend's apartment, her heart racing with excitement. She had been looking forward to this visit all day. She knocked on the door, and a moment later, it swung open.
But instead of her boyfriend, she was greeted by her best friend, mia, Ava's eyes widened in shock as she took in Mia's disheveled appearance. She was wearing one of Caleb's bathrobes, and her hair was messy.
"Ava, what are you doing here?" Mia asked, looking guilty.
Ava's eyes scanned the room behind mia, and that's when she saw him. Her boyfriend,Caleb, emerged from the bedroom, wearing only a pair of shorts.
Ava's face burned with anger and embarrassment. "What's going on here?" she demanded.
Caleb looked sheepish, but he didn't deny anything. "Ava, we need to talk."
Ava's heart sank as she followed Caleb into the living room. She felt like she was in a nightmare.
"Ava, I think we need to be honest with each other," Caleb said, his voice calm and detached. "You've been distant lately, and I've been feeling lonely. I think we want different things."
Ava felt like she'd been punched in the gut. "You're breaking up with me because I'm not always here?" she asked, her voice shaking.
Caleb nodded. "It's not just that. I've met someone else. I think she's a better match for me."
Ava felt like her world was crashing down around her. She had just requested a break because of him, because she wanted to spend more time with him. And now, he was telling her that it was all for nothing.
She turned to Mia, who was watching the scene unfold with a mixture of guilt and sympathy. "You're the other girl, aren't you?" Ava asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Mia nodded, looking ashamed."how long?"ava asked while choking on her tears.
"Two years"replied mia in a low tone.
Ava turned and walked out of the apartment, she wasn't watching where she was going, and she stumbled on the sidewalk, almost falling. She managed to catch herself,
Ava walked back to her car, her vision blurry from tears. She got in and locked the doors, feeling like she was going to collapse.
She took a few deep breaths, trying to calm herself down.
She opened her car door and stepped out onto the sidewalk, not really paying attention to where she was going. She just needed to move, to get out of the confines of her car and clear her head.
As she walked, Ava's mind replayed the conversation with Caleb over and over again.
Ava's feet carried her along the sidewalk, but her eyes were unfocused, lost in thought. She didn't notice the cars passing by, or the people walking in the opposite direction.
And then, suddenly, Ava was hit by a car.
She didn't see it coming. One minute she was walking, lost in thought, and the next she was flying through the air,
Ava landed hard on the pavement, the wind knocked out of her. She lay there, dazed and disoriented,as everything started to fade to black.A tear escaped her eye as she lost consciousness.
