Chapter 1 - Meeting Dad

"Mary! Get down here!", mom yelled at me from the kitchen.

"In a minute!", I yelled back, my eyes still glued on my phone. My patience was soon rewarded as a message popped in. It was from my boyfriend, Rick, who I'd been chatting with for up to an hour now. As my fingers began texting back a reply, the phone was rudely snatched from my hand.

"Hey!", I looked up to see my mom glaring down at me.

"And why are you still in your pyjamas young lady!?"

I just rolled my eyes and got off the bed. My clothes were strewn all over the room, a half filled suit case sat on the floor in the centre of all the chaos.

" Three minutes ", my mom announced and shut the door behind her, taking my phone with her. Great.

I changed into a tight yellow tank top and a pair of navy blue pants. After, slipping on a pair of matching yellow sandals on my feet. I walked up to my mirror and picked up my brush and began raking it through my tangled up blonde hair. After some minutes, I looked presentable and finished packing my important stuff into my bag. Grabbing the handle, I left the room and met my mom in the living room on her phone, and by the look on her face, I could already guess who she was speaking with.

Once she noticed my presence, she hung up the phone and ran a hand over her tired face.

"Go get my car keys and let's get this over with".

Already seeing as she was in a bad mood, I got the keys and tossed them to her.

"Let's go". She said and left through the front door. I glanced around the living room and saw my phone on the couch. So with a shrug, I picked it up and walked out the door.

I got into the back seat of my mom's car and dumped my suitcase beside me.

My mom not wanting to be disturbed, put in the radio and we began our journey. I unlocked my phone and read the message Rick had sent me stating that he's already missing me. A warm smile shone on my face as I texted back a reply. I felt eyes on me and looked up to see my mom's eyes glaring at me through the rear view mirror.

"Now listen carefully Mary", she started, reaching out her hand to reduce the volume of the radio.

"I know it's been a long time since you saw your dad but you have to understand that he's not the same you knew".

I let out a sigh.

Well that's an understatement.

My dad and mom have been divorced ror five years now since my mom had found out his little secret. My dad had always been away for one meeting or conference to another since I can recall. What we didn't know, was that this was all a lie to visit his Mistress. The day my mother found out, she was devastated. I still remember that day clearly. It was on my twelveth birthday. There had yelling , screaming , and hitting. Next thing I know, my mom hauled me out of the house with her to a motel down the street. Soon, very soon, my mom demanded a divorce and that was the last I saw of my dad. My mother and I moved to a new city to start a new life and here I am. I hadn't been in contact with him since 'till a few days ago when he called and demanded that I come visit him. My mother was mad but my dad issued law suit stating that he had the right to see me since I was his too, so my mother reluctantly agreed.

So, that's the story of my life.

"... Mary, Mary! Are you even listening?!"

"Huh... Oh yeah". I blinked and sent her a sweet smile. Truth be told, I hadn't heard a single word. She just sighed and pulled up at the airport.

"Remember what I said, if you don't like it there, you're always free to come back home. If his wife isn't treating you -".

"Mom!", I cut her off and rolled my eyes. "I'll be fine." I opened the car door and got out dragging my suitcase with me. "Bye. Love you" . I said and shut the door and made my way in.
