Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Broadcast Deception and a Very Concerned Girlfriend (or Two)

My next stream felt like walking a tightrope over a pit of confused viewers and potential Shadow Syndicate surveillance. Following Glitch's carefully constructed narrative points, I presented a series of seemingly random observations about NeoVeridia's infrastructure – flickering streetlights that seemed to pulse with an unnatural rhythm, unexplained network outages in specific sectors, and a general sense of… things not being quite right.

I peppered my observations with my usual brand of self-deprecating humor, making it seem like I was just a clueless idiot noticing weird stuff. The chat, predictably, latched onto every detail, spawning a multitude of conspiracy theories ranging from alien invasions to rogue squirrels operating the power grid.

『Harem Streamer System: Subversive messaging campaign initiated. Viewer engagement: High. Probability of Shadow Syndicate monitoring: 78%. Recommendation: Maintain plausible deniability and subtly promote merchandise. (New t-shirt design: 'I Blame the Squirrels.')』

"Merchandise?" I muttered under my breath. "Now is not the time to hawk t-shirts, System!"

Nightshade and Glitch monitored the stream from my apartment, their faces illuminated by the glow of their respective screens. Maya and Nova watched from a safe distance, their superhero senses on alert for any unwanted attention. The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a butter knife (preferably one that hadn't been used to spread expired cheese).

"Subtle, Corbin, subtle," Nightshade murmured, her eyes narrowed as she watched my clumsy attempts at seeming oblivious. "You sound like you're trying to solve a Scooby-Doo mystery."

"Hey, Velma was effective!" I retorted in a stage whisper.

Glitch, meanwhile, was tracking the stream's data, looking for any unusual spikes in viewership or suspicious IP addresses. "They're watching," they confirmed, their voice low. "Multiple connections from encrypted servers. They're taking the bait."

The stream ended without incident, but the aftermath was a flurry of worried texts and holographic projections. Maya was particularly concerned.

"Scott, are you sure about this?" she asked, her voice laced with anxiety. "Playing games with the Shadow Syndicate… it's incredibly dangerous."

"We have to do something, Maya," I replied, trying to sound braver than I felt. "Glitch thinks this can buy us time, maybe even give us an edge."

Nova placed a comforting hand on my shoulder, her touch radiating a calming cosmic energy. "We are with you, Scott. Every step of the way."

Nightshade, ever the pragmatist, was already moving on to the next phase. "Glitch has pinpointed the likely location of their central server based on the data spike during your stream. It's an abandoned research facility on the outskirts of the city."

"So, we're going in?" I asked, my stomach doing a nervous flip.

"Not yet," Nightshade said. "We need a plan. And we need to know what we're up against."

That's where the mysterious 'S' – Glitch – came in again. They had another piece of the puzzle, something they had uncovered while delving into the Harem Streamer System's bizarre code.

"The System… it's not just a random piece of rogue software," Glitch explained, their voice hushed. "It's… connected. To a network. A very old, very sophisticated network."

"Connected to what?" I asked, my curiosity piqued despite my fear.

"I don't know for sure," Glitch admitted. "But I found fragmented data logs, references to… Project Chimera. And a series of encrypted access codes."

Project Chimera? It sounded ominous, like something ripped straight out of a second-rate supervillain's manifesto.

『Harem Streamer System: Project Chimera identified (partial data). Potential connection to host's origin: 47%. Recommendation: Investigate further. Warning: May unlock traumatic backstory.』

"Traumatic backstory?" I groaned. "Great. Just what I needed."

Glitch managed to decrypt one of the access codes, revealing a schematic of the abandoned research facility – the same location where the Shadow Syndicate's server was likely located. But the schematic also showed something else: a hidden sub-level, marked with the Project Chimera designation.

"What's down there?" Maya wondered, her brow furrowed.

"I don't know," Glitch said. "But I have a bad feeling about it. The level of security down there… it's far beyond anything needed for a simple server farm."

Nightshade's eyes gleamed with a dangerous intensity. "Then that's where we need to go. That's where we'll find out what the Shadow Syndicate is really planning."

The next few hours were a flurry of planning and preparation. Nightshade coordinated our infiltration strategy, utilizing her extensive knowledge of stealth tactics and urban navigation. Maya and Nova prepared for potential combat, their powers honed and ready. Glitch worked on a way to remotely access the Shadow Syndicate's server and hopefully glean more information about Project Chimera.

As for me? I was mostly trying not to trip over things and remember the incredibly complicated hand signals Nightshade had taught me (most of which seemed to involve looking confused, which, admittedly, came naturally).

The abandoned research facility loomed on the horizon, a skeletal silhouette against the twilight sky. It looked exactly like the kind of place where mad scientists conducted questionable experiments and shadowy organizations plotted world domination. My stomach churned with a mixture of fear and a strange sense of… anticipation? Maybe my accidental descent into the world of heroes and villains was finally leading somewhere. Even if that somewhere was probably a heavily guarded underground lab filled with unknown horrors. And the Harem Streamer System? It was undoubtedly calculating the potential romance points with any mutated creatures we might encounter. My life was truly a bizarre adventure.
