Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: A Rare Sight in the World

After all, since she was also from the surrendering old Satan faction, having her in charge was far better than being led by someone from the new Satan faction.

Especially since, after mysteriously disappearing following a battle, Grayfia returned with even greater power.

Under the leadership of four young devils, the old Satan faction was quickly shattered.

From that point, the new Satan regime was fully established.

And with the support and promotion of the first-generation Asmodeus, Grayfia—despite not being one of the seventy-two pureblood devil houses—securely took the position of Satan Asmodeus.

This is the reason for the Asmodeus family's lofty status.

And Grayfia took on the responsibility of raising him since childhood.

It's no exaggeration to say that, throughout his upbringing, Grayfia acted both as a teacher and a mother figure.

"Well then, can you tell me why you came to see me now?"

Indeed, before turning twenty, he had lived with Grayfia. At that time, they saw each other every day.

But after reaching the level of High-Class Devil at the age of twenty, their meetings became much less frequent.

In Grayfia's words, he had become an adult, and she would no longer interfere too much with his growth path.

After saying that, Grayfia moved back into her own home.

Since then, they had only met maybe once every two or three years.

"Mm, it's nothing too important. I was just forced by a certain Satan to bring you some gifts."

As Ajuka said this, he reached out and summoned a magic circle. From it, an object resembling a chess box floated out.

"This is… a Devil Piece?"

As the box slowly opened, the pieces inside—resembling western chess pieces—revealed the topic's true nature.

As mentioned before:

After the great war between Devils, Angels, and Fallen Angels, each faction suffered such heavy losses that they had no choice but to begin relying on humans.

Heaven created organizations like the Church to raise exorcists and clergy who could wield the power of light.

Fallen Angels continued their usual methods—when they lacked personnel, they lured people from the angelic side.

As for the Devils, their solution came from a brilliant devil magician—Satan Ajuka Beelzebub.

To rapidly increase the Devils' combat strength and address the issue of low birth rates among devils, Ajuka developed a method for reincarnating other races into devils using chess pieces.

This technique was named—"Evil Pieces."

Modeled after western chess, upper-class devils could use these pieces to reincarnate members of other races into devils, making them their followers or servants.

There are six types of pieces:

— King (1)— Queen (1), worth nine Pawns— Rook (2), each worth five Pawns— Knight (2), each worth three Pawns— Bishop (2), each worth three Pawns— Pawn (8)

"This thing was supposed to be given to you five years ago, but because of Grayfia, it got delayed until now."

As Ajuka said this, he pushed the chess box forward.

"It's because of these four mutated pieces, right?"

With a slightly helpless expression, Vitan picked up one of the red pieces—specifically, a Queen—from the box using two fingers.

A red piece—normally, Devil Pieces follow international chess colors, either black or white.

In this chess set, aside from the four red pieces, the rest were black.

These differently-colored ones represented a special category of Devil Pieces—Mutated Pieces.

As the name implies, they're mutated forms of standard Devil Pieces.

They're identical in function to regular pieces, with only one major difference:

Even if the target for reincarnation is extremely powerful—normally requiring multiple pieces—a single mutated piece can do the job alone.

These rare pieces are extremely scarce. Among upper-class devils who possess Evil Pieces, only about one in ten might have a single mutated piece.

Even Rias Gremory—the sister of Satan Sirzechs Lucifer—only possesses one.

And yet, he somehow received four at once.

One of them was even a mutated Queen, a type he had never seen before. It clearly showed how much Grayfia doted on him.

"Of course! I put a ton of effort into making these mutated pieces."

Ajuka said this with a cheerful smile. Despite his complaints, he didn't actually seem unwilling.

And that was exactly the case.

Vitan immediately understood the meaning behind Ajuka's constant winking. He shrugged and patted Radix, who was sitting next to him, on the shoulder.

"Go ahead—give the Satan a rundown of the numerology we just used, and record it officially for him."

"I understand, Lord Vitan."

Radix immediately stood up, smiling slightly.

She was already well-versed in this sort of thing—after all, the same situation had happened countless times before.

Sure enough, Ajuka beamed with joy and also stood up, following behind Radix.

Once the two had left, only Vitan and Grayfia remained in the room.

"Your strength has improved quite a bit recently. Compared to the last time I saw you, the spell you used this time was much stronger."

Perhaps due to Ajuka's departure, Grayfia also temporarily dropped her icy exterior, revealing a gentle smile.

It gave off the kind of charm that could turn heads and steal hearts.

If the young elites of the Underworld were to witness such a side of Grayfia, their admiration for her would likely be rekindled once more!

After all, Grayfia's popularity in the Underworld was very high.

But her usually cold and aloof demeanor had silently crushed many admirers' hopes before they even had the chance to begin.

Even Sirzechs was no exception.

He had fallen for Grayfia during the internal war among the Satans, and pursued her for over a century.

It wasn't until nearly a hundred years ago that he finally gave up, choosing instead to marry a noble and elegant lady from the Bael family and start a family.

So this rare beauty before him—

Was truly a privilege only Vitan could enjoy.
