Chapter 7 - The Guardian's Test.

Ava, Liam and Eve stepped into the hidden passage, their hearts pounding with anticipation. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and mold. As they navigated the twisting passage, Ava knew that the path was treacherous. The ground was uneven, and the walls seemed to press in on them.

" I don't like this," Liam said, his voice low. " It feels like we're being herded towards something ."

" We're getting close to the Heart. I can feel it," Eve said, her eyes gleaming with excitement.

" Let's keep moving. We can't turn back now." Ava said.

The passage opened up into a vast underground chamber, the ceiling lost in darkness. But as they explored the chamber, Ava realized that they were not alone. A group of shadowy figures emerged from the darkness, their eyes fixed on Ava and her companions.

" Who are you?" Ava demanded, her voice firm.

The figure didn't respond, but instead, began to circle around them and Ava's heart pounded with fear as she realized they were trapped.

" We need to get out of here," Liam said, his voice urgent.

Eve's eyes locked onto the figures, her expression calculating. " I think we should try to communicate with them. They might be guardians of the city."

Ava's eyes met Eve's, and she nodded. " Let's try. We don't know what kind of danger we're facing. "

Ava, Liam and Eve stood before the shadowy figures. Ava took a deep breath and began to speak, hoping to establish a connection with the guardians.

" We mean no harm," Ava said, her voice calm and respectful. " We're here to uncover the secrets of the City and learn its ancient wisdom."

The guardians didn't respond immediately, but instead, seemed to confer with each other in a language Ava couldn't understand. After a moment of tense silence, one of the guardians stepped forward.

" You have reached this far," the guardian said, its voice low and mysterious. " But to process, you much prove your worthiness. We will give you a test."

" We're ready. What is the test ?" Ava said, determination in her voice.

The Guardian's eyes gleamed with an otherworldly intensity. " You must answer our riddle. If you answer correctly, we will grant you access to the Heart of the City. But if you fail, you will never leave this place. "

Liam's eyes narrowed. " What's the riddle?"

The guardian's smile was enigmatic. "What can be broken, but never held ? What can be given, but never sold ?"

Ava's mind raced with possibilities. She thought about the answer, weighing her options carefully. " I think I know the answer," Ava said finally, her voice confident. " The answer is a promise ."

The guardians regarded her for a moment, then nodded in unison. " You are correct. A promise is indeed something that can be broken, but never held. It is something that can be given, but never sold." The guardians stepped aside, revealing a hidden doorway. " You have passed the test. The Heart of the City awaits you."

Ava's heart skipped a beat as she gazed at the doorway. What secrets lay behind ? What challenges awaited them.?
