Chapter 2 - Learning To Rise

Richard's elation at his third term examination results quickly turned to apprehension as his mother, Mrs. Oladapo, expressed her concerns about his academic performance. Determined to take action, she sought permission from her workplace to visit Richard's school, where she promptly met with the principal to discuss her son's situation. In a heartfelt plea, Mrs. Oladapo requested that Richard be allowed to retake his previous class, citing his disappointing grades and his apparent preoccupation with frivolous pursuits like drawing. Despite the principal's reassurances that Richard would improve with time and dedication, Mrs. Oladapo remained steadfast in her decision, adamant that her son should return to his former class.

Though the principal reluctantly agreed to her request, he made it clear to Richard's previous class teacher that close attention should be paid to Richard's progress, especially in light of his mother's concerns. Despite feeling disheartened by his mother's remarks, Richard's teacher apologized for any shortcomings and pledged to support him in his academic journey. As Mrs. Oladapo excused herself and left the school premises, Richard initially struggled to comprehend the situation. However, his spirits lifted when he realized he would be returning to his familiar corner in the classroom, a place he had grown fond of. Although he missed his friends, he remained hopeful that the change would ultimately be for the best.

With the school break approaching, Richard eagerly awaited the opportunity to reunite with his friends and share the news of his return to his former class, eager to embrace the familiar routines and faces that had become a comforting constant in his school life. As Richard settled into his new classroom, he couldn't shake off the sense of remorse and unhappiness at being separated from his friends. However, their reassuring words and encouragement lifted his spirits, reminding him that their bond transcended the confines of a classroom. They assured him that he was still valued and loved, and they eagerly welcomed him to join them during leisure time for play and camaraderie.

Despite the warmth of his friendships outside the classroom, Richard found himself facing a new challenge within the confines of his academic environment. His teacher's strict demeanor instilled a sense of fear in him, prompting Richard to take precautionary measures by wearing extra clothes beneath his uniform to school. In the midst of his adjustments, Richard found an unexpected ally in Deborah, the youngest daughter of the school's proprietor. Despite her playful and dramatic nature, Deborah's quick wit and expedited education set her apart. She often teased and joked with Richard, eliciting laughter from him and their classmates. Richard admired her playful spirit and protective instincts, often standing up for her when others attempted to bully her.

Their playful banter occasionally led to moments of tension, such as when Richard retaliate by pulling Deborah's ear in jest. Although Deborah initially reacted with annoyance, Richard's peace-making nature prevailed as he apologized and offered her a peace offering in the form of a lollipop. Their bond strengthened through such interactions, with Deborah quickly forgiving him and moving past the incident. As the school day drew to a close, Richard took on the responsibility of returning library books and distributing sketches to classmates in exchange for payment. Despite the challenges he faced, Richard's unwavering determination and kindness continued to shine through, cementing his status as a beloved figure within the school community.

Richard's generosity extends beyond the confines of his classroom as he selflessly sketches for friends and those in need without expecting anything in return. His popularity as a talented artist earns him admiration from peers, who eagerly associate themselves with him on his way home but despite the attention, Richard remains grounded in waiting for his friends' football match to end before heading home together with them. As he arrives home, Richard's friends often accompany him, spending time with him before returning to their own homes. Janet, his longtime best friend, holds a special place in his heart, often persuading her brother to join them at Richard's house. Despite being in different classes, Janet and Richard's bond remains strong, with Janet being Richard's preferred playmate due to their longstanding friendship.

In moments of solitude, Richard finds solace in sketching, using his creative talents to capture the beauty of his surroundings. From the cars parked in the compound to the flowers and fruits adorning the landscape, Richard's sketches reflect his keen eye for detail and imaginative mind. However, his desire to learn new skills lead him to seek guidance from his brother Opeyemi, who is also skilled in drawing. When the trend of Super Man portraits sweeps through the media, Richard sees an opportunity to expand his artistic repertoire. Despite Opeyemi's reluctance to teach him, citing concerns about potential competition, Richard's determination to learn remains unwavering. Although faced with rejection, Richard's humility and eagerness to improve showcase his true character as he continues to pursue his passion for art.

On a serendipitous day, a newspaper sheet fluttered to Richard's feet, carrying with it the image of Superman in various dynamic poses. Captivated by the superhero's iconic figure, Richard seized the opportunity to replicate the image in his own artistic style. Despite grappling with self-doubt, Richard traced the outlines of Superman into a blank sheet of paper, determined to bring the iconic character to life. Under the cloak of evening's cool breeze, Richard emerged from his home, unveiling his rendition of Superman to the awe-struck onlookers. Their admiration and praise washed over him like a warm embrace, fueling his confidence and igniting a newfound sense of pride in his abilities.

Buoyed by his success, Richard ventured to school the next day, eager to share his masterpiece with his friends. Even Tunde, his rival, grudgingly acknowledged Richard's talent, though his words were tinged with envy and resentment. However, Richard's moment of triumph was short-lived as his father's harsh words shattered the euphoria. Accusing him of squandering his time on fruitless endeavors, his father's disapproval cut deep, leaving Richard feeling dejected and misunderstood. In a fit of frustration, Richard crumpled the sketch, tearing it to pieces as his anger boiled over. Despite his internal turmoil, he remained composed in the face of his sisters' mockery, unwilling to stoop to their level. With a heavy heart, Richard retreated into solitude, grappling with the conflicting emotions stirred by his father's harsh words, and his own aspirations. Yet, amidst the turmoil, a flicker of determination remained, driving him to persevere in pursuit of his passion for art, despite the obstacles that lay ahead.

During school break-time, Richard would indulge in snacks and biscuits purchased from the school canteen, carefully saving them for later enjoyment. With his hunger momentarily sated, he would join his friends for spirited games played in the school's open space. Among their favorites were "Police and Thief" and "Ice and Water," each offering its own unique blend of excitement and camaraderie. In both games, players were divided into opposing teams, each with its own objective and strategy. In "Ice and Water," the teams faced off in a thrilling pursuit, with members racing to touch opponents to freeze them in place. The first team to immobilize all of their opponents emerged victorious, showcasing their agility and teamwork. Similarly, "Police and Thief" unfolded as a game of cat and mouse, with one team tasked with apprehending the other.

The police team utilized stealth and cunning to track down the thieves, while the thieves employed evasive maneuvers to avoid capture. Tensions ran high as players navigated the playground, their laughter and shouts filling the air. In both games, the element of surprise and quick reflexes were key to success. Whether freezing opponents in "Ice and Water" or outmaneuvering pursuers in "Police and Thief," Richard and his friends reveled in the thrill of competition, forging bonds and creating memories that would last a lifetime.
