Chapter 20 - Quiet Tease, Loud Heart

The classroom buzzed with quiet conversation and the occasional clatter of pencils. The history teacher was running late, which meant ten whole minutes of unstructured time—rare and precious in the world of 2-B.

Kaito sat in his usual seat, trying to read through his literature notes, but he could feel Ren watching him.

He glanced sideways.

Ren was leaning on one hand, twirling his pen lazily between his fingers, a slow, smug little smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Kaito raised an eyebrow. "What?"

Ren tilted his head. "Nothing. You just look very serious when you're pretending to study."

"I am studying," Kaito said, nudging Ren's shin under the desk.

"You've been stuck on the same paragraph for five minutes."

Kaito flushed. "That's because someone's staring at me."

Ren grinned. "Can't help it. You're distracting."

"Please stop flirting with me in homeroom."

"But this is the only place where I can watch you struggle to stay composed," Ren whispered, voice low and wicked. "It's kind of adorable."

Kaito gave him a sharp look—but his ears were pink.

"You're ridiculous," he muttered.

Ren leaned a little closer. "You like it."

"Unfortunately," Kaito grumbled.

At that, Ren slipped a folded scrap of paper across the desk. Kaito eyed it warily before opening it.

In Ren's messy scrawl:

Kaito, stop being so cute. I'm trying to focus.

P.S. You're mine. That's all.

Kaito blinked, then covered his mouth to hide a traitorous smile.

He scribbled back quickly:

You're impossible.

P.S. Right back at you.

He passed it over.

Ren read it, grinned wide, then—bold as ever—reached out and tugged lightly on Kaito's sleeve.

Kaito turned, startled.

And Ren mouthed, Mine.

Kaito's heart skipped a full beat.

Before he could respond, the door slid open and the history teacher walked in, flustered and apologizing for being late.

Everyone scrambled to straighten up, notes shuffling and conversations cut off mid-sentence.

Kaito turned forward, face red, heart loud.

Beside him, Ren tapped his pen twice on the desk.

Kaito looked down.

Another note had appeared beside his notebook:

Wanna come over after school?

Just you, me, and zero distractions.

(Okay, maybe some distractions.)

Kaito bit back a grin.

Absolutely.
