Chapter 1 - The change

Stop being a tomboy; start dressing and acting like a girl. These were the words Elena never ceased to hear from her best friend, Susan.

,Elena remained single and embraced her tomboy nature-something her parents, siblings, and most of her friends disapproved of. But Elena didn't seem to care... until Adrian came to her school.

Adrian wasn't just handsome; his charm was woven from kindness and sincerity. His eyes, a deep shade of hazel, sparkled with genuine curiosity about the world and the people in it. When he smiled, it was as if the whole room brightened-not because of the flash of his teeth, but because his joy was contagious and heartfelt.

Ever since Adrian arrived, Elena began to act more feminine and stopped being a tomboy. Everyone questioned her sudden change, but the only explanation she gave was that she was undergoing growth.

Susan was the only one Elena confided in-she had a crush on Adrian.

But change wasn't easy. Some days, Elena felt like she was wearing a mask, unsure if this new version of herself was truly who she wanted to be or just a reflection of what others expected. Susan noticed the conflict in her eyes.

"Are you sure this is what you want?" Susan asked gently one afternoon as they sat under the old oak tree behind the school.

Elena hesitated, then nodded slowly. "I think so. It's not just about Adrian. Maybe... maybe I'm discovering parts of myself I never knew existed."

Susan smiled, relieved. "Just promise me you'll be true to yourself, no matter what."

Elena smiled back, feeling a warmth she hadn't felt before. For the first time, she realized that growing up wasn't about fitting into a mold-it was about finding the courage to be herself, with or without anyone else's approval.

And with Adrian's arrival, Elena's world was changing in ways she never imagined.

Days turned into weeks, and Elena found herself caught between two worlds-the tomboy she had always been and the girl she was beginning to explore becoming. Her closet now held a mix of worn-in jeans and soft, flowing skirts. Her laughter sometimes came easier, but at other times, it felt forced, like she was trying on someone else's skin.

One afternoon, as she sat nervously in the school library, Adrian approached her table. His hazel eyes held a gentle warmth that made her heart flutter.

"Hey, Elena," he said softly. "I noticed you've been different lately. You seem... happier. Is that good different or confusing different?"

Elena smiled, grateful for his kindness. "Maybe a bit of both," she admitted. "I'm trying to figure out who I really am."

Adrian nodded thoughtfully. "You know, I like you for you. Not for how you dress or act, but for the person you are inside. I hope you never lose sight of that."

His words sank deep into her soul, reassuring and freeing. In that moment, Elena realized that the courage to be herself didn't mean she had to choose between who she was and who she was becoming-it meant embracing every part of her, unapologetically.

Later that evening, Elena called Susan. "Thank you," she whispered. "For being there, for listening. I think I'm ready to stop hiding behind masks. No matter what happens with Adrian or anyone else, I want to be true to myself."

Susan's voice was warm and proud. "That's the best decision you could make. You're amazing just as you are."

Elena looked out her bedroom window at the stars beginning to twinkle. Change was scary, but it was also beautiful. And for the first time, she felt ready to shine-on her own terms.
