Maurice's lips parted open, his eyes glinting with shock as he gazed at me. "Baby, I promise, it's not what you think," he answered. "Then tell me what it is" I replied, my heart felt like it was going to shatter and my breath already sounded shaky. I needed him to start talking instantly before I turn the whole place into shambles.
"Baby, this is Mabel, she is my childhood friend, She's a model. She recently returned from the states and I thought she could stay with us, you know she is pregnant she will have more care with us than to stay in a hotel. trust me, there is nothing going on and I'm not the father of her child." He said, batting his eyes at me.
I was completely mute and confused about how to respond to what he just said. My face narrowed at him then fell on Mable countless times.
He then turned to Mabel to introduce me to her.
"Mabel, this is Jasmine, my wife." The thick air filled with fury suddenly turned still. I felt a bit better when he introduced me as his wife but I still find what he had said about their relationship hard to believe.
Just then, Mabel looked at me with a smile that didn't seem genuine, "oh, I'm sorry, he mentioned that he's married but you know I haven't met you before". I also smiled coldly and nodded but I was silent and looking at both of them with doubts. Maurice saw that I was not satisfied with the whole situation and walked up to me to kiss me. Assuring me that there is nothing going on between them.
A soft sigh left my lips and I could feel my eyes burning hot. "We'll talk about this better when we get home, honey." I whispered. Just then Mabel's words struck the peace I'd struggled to hold again.
"Maurice, I saw this jewelry in your bag when you went to the toilet earlier and tried it on, I assumed it was mine, it's lovely" my eyes immediately flew to her long thin neck, I was shocked to see the same jewelry Maurice was going to use to make up for running off on our anniversary night, but my rage only kept building.
"That's the same jewelry you promised to buy for me Maurice." Confusion engulfed Maurice, he bowed his head in frustration. He pinched his upper nose and grunt. "Jasmine, I hope you don't mind if I have it, I like the jewelry and I'm sure Maurice can get you another one, besides we are just friends and I don't see anything wrong with it." Mabel exclaimed.
My face turned cold as I turned to look at Maurice.
"Ain't you going to say anything, Maurice?" He raised his head to look at me and sighed, "baby, I'll get you another one okay, I'm sorry." I felt disappointed and alone but I still tried to calm myself because I wouldn't want to make more scenes.
I moved closer to Maurice and asked him a disturbing question "honey, what am I to you?" He gazed at me dumbfoundedly like he was searching for answers in my eyes. "It hurts that we've been together for almost five years and I feel like I still don't know who you are." I could feel his heart sink through his eyes. "Let's talk about this when we get home honey" he answered.
I walked towards my office, leaving them both to enjoy their meal. A million thoughts flooded my mind as I walked. I could not hold back the tears that had gathered in my eyes as they seemingly dropped. I cheered myself up and went about my day. I decided to keep my prenatal results from him until I'm able to place a meaningful meaning to what could be going on between the two of them.
Don't get me wrong, I trust Maurice, he has never given me a reason to doubt his trust since we've been together but something keeps eating me up about Mabel, she seems to exude a different energy that sparks curiosity inside me. A type of curiosity that wants me to find out more.
Later that day, work was over and I was exhausted, I booked a cab to go home and in no time we motioned through the city, I couldn't wrap my head around what had happened at the restaurant earlier, my rage started building up over again but the buzz from my phone had cut me off my thoughts. I looked at my phone to see my friend, Laura's call.
"Hey girl, what's up with you?" She yelled through the phone. Her voice made me smile a little. Laura is just one crazy bitch I can't do without. I've known her since high school. She's a very friendly person and sexy. she knows just how to make me feel better with just her silly voice.
"Laura, I think it's too late to be loud wherever you are." She giggled and I smiled.
"Girl… I've missed you so much, I was hoping to come visit you sometime later" we haven't spoken since my wedding with Maurice. She'll always say she doesn't want to spoil the fun of my honeymoon.
"I miss you too gúrl, where are you at?" We chatted for a little bit catching up over the phone. She suddenly remembered and told me what she had seen earlier today.
"Oh, yeah, babes I saw your husband earlier with a pregnant woman and they went home together, I had driven behind them when I was going to get groceries." She added. My blood boiled in furious pain but I managed to hide it.
"Yeah, she's his friend, he mentioned she's just arrived from the state." Maurice didn't mention she'd be staying at our place, what the hell is she doing in our house. I couldn't contain my anger, I ended the call with Laura and told the can man to hurry home
