Chapter 2 - Hanna

[Lucas]

It's been days since I opened my eyes in this strange land. If it has been five days, three, four or week; I have no idea, I seem to have lost count, all I know is that is has been mornings of hunger and miles trekking and nights fending of wild animals. Animals of a different breed to those known to live on earth.

In all the miles I have trekked I have yet to come across another human, now I am really wondering where I am; I sincerely doubt I am still on earth, as strange as that may sound.

I soon walked up to a high gate, the first dwelling I have come across that seems to be occupied. I knocked, but got no response. The gate was rather high and I could not see the house within from where I stood outside the gate, but I am sure that there should be a gatekeeper of such a residence, who must have heard my knuckles collide with the solid gate; a bit too solid if you ask me, it could withstand war.

Just in case no one heard me the first time, with how thick the gate is and all, I knocked again—twice more to be precise.

Finally, I was heard and a small stout man dressed in the ensemble of a royal guard peeped out the gate and gasped, his eyes going wide as though he had seen the King before him, before he quickly rushed inside and in a minute I heard the opening of many locks and whatnot and the gate was opened before me, admitting me in.

[Han]

"Hanna!" the matron shouted for about the third time this morning. Han had done something wrong again.

Oh boy, Han groaned inwardly, what is it now

"Yes, matron!" he answered as he ran towards the voice of the matron

"You lousy girl, come here!" the matron said, calling her to come closer to the lord's dining table she had earlier set for him and his guest of high caliber he would be having today.

"Thank goodness I am the one to see this horror not the lord himself or his guest, oh dearie me!" The matron shivered, pure horror on her face as she beheld the way in which Hanna had set the lord's table.

Peering around the matron to look at the table, Han saw it to be exactly as he had set it earlier, there was nothing wrong with it. "What is the matter, matron?" he asked, "The table seems to be just fine"

"Just fine? Just fine?! Oh don't grate my nerves any further child and tell me you do not see anything wrong with the arrant nonsense display on this table you set!"

Han shrugged, he saw nothing wrong with what he set. The order in which he set the lord's table was in this way; one plate under a soup bowl with a fork in the bowl, same for the guest as the lord, every other utensil he didn't know the purpose of he kept at the center of the table, where the main course would be set.

As he looked to the matron, he saw that she was positively enraged, her face red, her ears steaming. Wordlessly, Han took a step back.

"This is the third chore you have failed miserably at just this morning; is there anything you are good at girl?" the matron was saying as she stalked closer to Han who took a step back with every step the matron took forward, "I would not be reassigning you another time this morning. You are yet to complete a week with us and all you have showed us is incompetence, do you mean the lord made a mistake bringing you in, is that you are saying, that you do not appreciate his kindness?"

Han shook his head, "No, matron"

"Then you better start showing your appreciation!" the matron scolded, "Start by fixing this mess on the table, and sharpening your housekeeping skills, because one more slip and you can say goodbye to food for the rest of the week"
