Chapter 8 - Secrets

I couldn't stop thinking about what Ava said.

"Don't do it again."

Like it had happened before.

Like she knew what I was.

Or worse—like she was one too.

I tried watching her the next day, but she avoided me. Sat with different people at lunch. Changed her usual route between classes.

She wasn't just creeped out.

She was hiding.

That made two of us.

By the time lunch rolled around, I was tired of guessing.

So I followed her.

She went to the second-floor stairwell—usually empty this time of day. I waited a few seconds, then stepped in behind her.

She didn't turn around.

"I knew you were coming," she said.

I froze.

"You heard me," she muttered, still facing the window. "You've been following me since yesterday."

I took a slow step forward. "You saw me?"

She finally turned. Her eyes weren't angry anymore. Just tired.

"I see things too," she said. "Sometimes. Not all the time. Not like… not like you."

I swallowed hard.

"What do you mean, 'not like me'?"

She looked away again. "Mine aren't clear. They're like dreams I haven't had yet. Or feelings I can't explain. But sometimes…" She hesitated. "Sometimes I just know something bad is going to happen. A second before it does."

I stared at her.

This wasn't possible.

Was it?

I'd lived with this power for years, always thinking I was the only one.

But now?

There was Lena, glitching my ability.

And now there's Ava.

Two people who don't act like normal.

Who know things.

Only question left:

Why?
