Ever since the day that could only be referred to as a horrid, planetary disaster, holes opened up in the fabric of space and time, creatures came from these tears, these portals and nearly destroyed the world.
Humanity had been scrambling to come back together, thankfully with these portals cam mystical powers for humans, sure there were many, hundreds of people that had no powers or abilities, but, thanks to the ones that had been granted power and ability, humanity managed to beat back the creatures. As time went on these heros were able to explain how to use the abilities they've obtained.
However, most could only weild one for their entire life as their body adjusted to it and any more would be overwhelming and their bodies wouldn't be able to handle the power, either causing them to be crippled for the rest of their life, one to be very painfully rejected, or the person will be sibjected to the most painful of deaths. There were the rare few that could weild two powers or even rarer three of them.
Ever since then, with the government in disarray, a hierarchy has been formed, and anyone, whether they had an ability or not, were drafted to be trained to combat these creatures in case any manage to come through, however none have ever since humanity had started entering back and forth through these rifts, hunting the beasts.
Every time a beast was killed humanity would gain something called a beast core, used to make weapons, armor, or energy. But sometimes, rarely, a beast would have something else called a soul core which there were two types, one could be used to increase the power of a person who consumes it, and another which would automatically transform into a weapon or armor that could only be weilded by the one who owns it and will disappear upon their death.
Of course these soul core items were able to be transferred, and that isn't the only thing to be taken from these monsters, their meat was quite the delicacy, the higher the tier beast, the better the taste of the meat, of course there were some plant based ones as well. The plant beasts couldn't move, and a lot of them produced the most succulant fruit which, if one knew how to handle the plant monster, could pluck it without issue.
There were several ranks to a beast. Here are the ranks in order from lowest to highest.
Basic
Awakened
Monsterous
Demonic
King
Heavenly
Divine
Of course these are just their titles, they have a secondary rank, ranking the tier of difficulty for the beast, D, E, C, A, S, and most deadly for their type: SS. So in other words a Divine SS rank beast, well, pray for a swift death beacause there's no running from it. There are legends of such beasts, but none have ever been beaten. Obviously the higher tier and rank the beast, the higher quality the materials gleaned from it and the more common it was for it to have a soul core.
Javil Raymond is a young teen, aged at around 16, he was skinny and frail with glasses and a not so good memory, he also didn't have much, what's the word, conviction, much will or ambition to do really anything, though he enjoyed attention even though he didn't do much to get it. He spent a lot of his time sitting around, bored with his life, going to school being a loner and just trying to get through life without any problems popping up.
He didn't mind the way he lived, even with the lack of popularity, it was quiet, peaceful, no one bothered him and he didn't bother them. He had little to no cash, and had no parents, well, he did, but he didn't live with them and instead the state provided him somewhere to live since there weren't anymore orphanages after the catastrophe, and he was too old to just be put into a home. But he made do with what he had.
He sighed not looking forward to being moved to the BFA, Beast Fighting Academy. A military run place where students had to go, well, there were exceptions, but Javil was the unluky one to be picked, though he was often unlucky. He went through his final schoolday as normal. He just hoped he wouldn't be bullied for not having any ability or even really any power, that was how it worked, even before now.
The powerful and rich rule the world and the weak and poor suffer. He wished he could do something to change this, but there wasn't, he wasn't some special guy who had any power to do so, Javil was a nobody that wasn't going to amount to anything, and honestly, he was too lazy to care. As long as he lived life doing what he wanted when he wanted, he'd die happy.
As he exited the school building he bumped into someone carrying a bag full of what looked like glowing orbs, causing one of them to fall. He caught it, though unlike the others this one was red and pulsing where the others were blue. A soul core?! Wow, never thought I'd see one in person. He thought excitedly, admiring it.
"Hey! Sir! You-! dropped this..." the boy trailed off, looking around, seeing no sign of the person he bumped into, rubbing his head in confusion. He thought briefly that the person might've had a speed piwer and been running and hadn't noticed he or she bumped into the kid. He decided to head home to admire the orb that felt rather, warm to the touch, for now, he stuffed it into his pocket so no one would question how he got it.
Javil figured if the guy didn't stop or come back for it he didn't miss it too much. It was odd to see someone with a bag full of beast cores but it wasn't too unusual, there were some people that others called 'rogues' people that acted on their own, fighting beasts by themselves and keeping everything for themselves instead of joining the military or any big corporations or anything.
Eventually, Javil finally got to his place, taking a deep breath, locking the door, tossing his bag to the side and falling onto his bed with a big sigh, taking the orb from his pocket and looking at it. "I can't get over how cool this thing looks, I should probably set it off to the side while I get some shuteye.
I'm too tired to put it somewhere for safekeeping... I'll do it tomorrow." The boy mutrered to himself, setting the orb off to the side and closing his eyes, while he slept he heard a weird voice ring out in his mind. "Congratulations, young novice! You have awakened!" Of course, the boy thought it was part of his dream and continued to sleep away until there was a loud knock on the door.
