Chapter 28: Dragon's wroth

Chapter Text

The storm grew and grew, chasing them through the sky until it was filled with the churning blackness and swirling wind. Daenerys and Ghidorah flew high, so high the air was thin and Daenerys had to breathe slow and even. Ghidorah had no such hindrance, wings moving in steady beats as Daenerys clung tight to his back with chains around her hips and a sword at her waist. When they rested, it was only for an hour before they moved on. Otherwise they sailed over forests, great grassy plains, mountain peaks and flowing rivers. At one point they even passed over a khalasar, strewn beneath them like a line of ants.

Ghidorah was eager for the coming fight, restless from many months watching his mother and her frustration trying to pact with the masters. They had shunned her offered hand and killed her people and now Daenerys and her child would show them the consequences of their actions. Ghidorah's excitement mingled with Daenerys' rage and when they reached Meereen it was with a great tempest at their back and their blood burning for retribution.

As Daenerys predicted, they arrived at Meereen at the height of a moonless night. The sky was already a deep black from a storm, one drifting in from the sea and filling the air with the stink of salt and cold rain. The one chasing them embraced the other, the storm consolidating into a great churning mass over the city and surrounding lands. Lightning was already striking through the bay, rods of energy that flit up the surf in flashes before fading with great booms of noise. When they sailed over the army below to fly over Meereen, lightning struck at Ghidorah's wings to shift from blue and gold.

Her child was eager for the fight but Daenerys urged caution. The storm, the rain, the lightning, it would be their ally for this fight but it was still only the two of them against tens of thousands. They would strike but they needed to pick their first targets to announce their presence and then use the squall as a shield.

The army surrounding Meereen were a broad mix from the surrounding slaver cities but she recognized many of the banners and flags below; New Ghis, Yunkai and Qarth, Tolos, Elyria and Mantarys, and sellsword companies. She tried to remember Ser Barristan's lessons, of deducing numbers merely by eye alone, and realized with a jolt the combined number of the slaver alliance was over seventy thousand men, over triple her own forces.

So many, Daenerys thought as Ghidorah banked high above Dragon's Bay, still hidden within the storm.

Out in the bay there were numerous ships and vessels but Daenerys chose to concentrate upon the forces on land- already on the bay many of the ships were being churned to and fro in the increasingly wild waves, anchors having to be dropped and attention set to keeping their vessels from being thrown upon the shore.

They would have to be stealthy, in this Daenerys knew. While it was difficult to strike a dragon in the sky, they had the weather itself as an ally. She was soaked through in the rain within the storm but Ghidorah's scales were hot beneath her and she felt no chill despite her slick grip upon his back. They would be as a monster in tales, she impressed to her child, they would slip in and out of the storm like a snake in the grass, to lash out and sow carnage before vanishing again. They needed to sow chaos, to break the army. Her child, liking the idea of being a beast of terror to his enemies, agreed with her as he swept down his wings as more lightning danced around them.

As they circled the bay and flew back over Meereen within the city they could see the various troops set up and Daenerys felt her stomach lurch as she spotted lines of Unsullied in formation, her freedmen and even her little khalasar set up before Meereen's gates on either side of the city. She could even see Ser Barristan in his gold and white armour, upon the back of her striped one, even as they were so high up in the sky they were above the Great Pyramid. Her people must have the same idea as herself- to take advantage of the moonless night and storm to attack the slaver army.

Dragonfire knew neither friend nor foe and Daenerys had no wish to accidentally butcher her own people. She must strike while they were still safely within Meereen and hope they would batten down the hatches within the walls while she and her child danced beyond.

Ghidorah sensed her intention and made for the great host beyond the walls, even as Daenerys searched out for their first target.

The trebuchets would do nicely, six great siege weapons set up at various angles around Meereen. Even in the storm Ghidorah could see as clearly as any hawk and Daenerys could see through his eyes and see what he saw. She saw how the weapons were still in motion, see the bodies slung up in a high arc to go splattering within Meereen's walls. Plague riddled, no doubt. She had read about such a common tactic. It would be another motivator for her people to act within Meereen's walls, if they had a malady seeping through the streets.

She would destroy them first.

As Ghidorah flew back over the great expanse of the slaver alliance she could see various animals below panicking; the clouds still hid them but she could see the legion of armoured elephants break free of their enclosure and flee north, away from Meereen despite attempts to corral them back. Horses were also sensing the dragon high above, shaking manes and kicking their hooves as they sailed through the clouds towards the nearest trebuchet. They could use that as well, the animals panicking to sow more chaos as they assaulted the legions.

Then they were high above the catapult, Ghidorah folding his great wings as he plummeted down like a golden arrow. Wind whistled past Daenerys, bells singing and chains rattling and wind howling as they rapidly shot downwards like a diving eagle.

"Jelmazmar!"

Serpentine throats glowing, Ghidorah flared out his wings in a swoop before spitting out triple sets of lightning from his fanged maws. They merged into one before striking the trebuchet in a brilliant burst of light, the wood splintering and flying in various directions to wound the various soldiers near as the catapult exploded. Screams filled the air as the slaver army below realized what was upon them but before any could shoot upon them Ghidorah swept down his wings and was back in the storm.

They flew over the armies, spitting down lightning as they took down the trebuchets one by one until all six were just smouldering piles of burnt wood and snapped lines. Animals were fleeing below, trampling soldiers or knocking down tents as lightning from the storm danced throughout the camp. Warhorns bellowed from Meereen as her people responded, Ghidorah letting out a trilling cry in response before they flew down the line of the hills to destroy the rows of scorpions. So far panic was too great and none had the sense to loosen a bolt towards them, the churning clouds, torrential rain and blackness of the night making it impossible for any to spot them before Ghidorah was spitting light down upon them.

Daenerys felt rage burning her blood tallow hot, her child's bloodlust mingling with her anger. People were running below, lightning setting tents alight and fleeing beyond Meereen. Daenerys focused on scattering the main forces, Ghidorah zig-zagging through the sky as he spat down lightning below. Great splits opened in the ground, tents bursting into flames and lightning dancing along steel armour and poles.

When they past over one of the sellswords camps Daenerys realized with a jolt she recognized the banner snapping in the wind as they passed by within the clouds. The broken sword of the Second Sons. And she quickly spotted Brown Ben Plumm, astride his horse and surrounded by his captains in the camp. A blade for the master's course.

Betrayer!

Her shriek was as verbal as it was mental, and her child responded by bursting out of the cloud cover and landing right upon the muddy ground with a bellow of rage even as Doreah and Jorah flashed within her mind. The horses scattered but Ghidorah's fangs tore the betrayer right from his steed, his barbed tails whipping through the tents and troops around them. Blood and limbs went flying before Ghidorah snapped his neck from side to side like a terrier with a rat, hurling the man's decapitated body off into the rain as blood and flesh clung to his jaws. Furious, their wings swept down in a great torrent of air and they were back in the sky to blast lightning down on the sellsword camp.

The storm howled around them, wind so great it was ripping banners from poles and tents rolling along the plains. People were fleeing, most on foot or clinging to their hysterical steeds. Rage-filled, Daenerys and Ghidorah continued their assault, occasionally landing on the ground to rend soldiers limb from limb, or crush them underfoot, or send them flying like dolls with greats sweeps of wings and tails before taking back to the air.

Rain and lightning swirled as Ghidorah swooped along the edges of the army, even snatching a slaver and her steed right from the ground to maul her to death midair with three heads before tossing the remains off into the squall. Blood splattered back on Daenerys, her not even flinching as they continued their assault.

So preoccupied they were with ripping asunder the heart of the army, it wasn't until the ships out in the bay began to catch alight and more horns sounded from Meereen did Daenerys realize there were newcomers. Banking midair they flew towards the Skahazadhan, water black in the night. Numerous people were trying to swim across it, flailing in the waters but Ghidorah ducked through the storm to spit lightning into the river. A great expanse of it lit up, the lightning dancing through the churning waters and electrocuting many within before they continued towards Dragon's Bay.

Now it wasn't just slaver vessels, instead newcomers had arrived in the midst of the seastorm. At first Daenerys thought they could be the Volantis fleet rumoured to be sailing to Meereen but as they drew near she realized there was a great kraken upon the sails. She knew it was the sigil of House Greyjoy of the Iron Islands but she had certainly not expected for them to travel all the way from the western most kingdom of Westeros to Essos.

Fighting had broken out on the shores, not from her people but rather the new fleet attacking both the ships and the scattered army along the banks. Ghidorah flew overhead, his wings beating like drums and occasionally spitting down lightning at the Qartheen ships. Several were already alight by the iron islanders or sinking below the black waters and Ghidorah destroyed several more with blasts of light that split hulls and cracked masts. Sometimes he'd swoop down and snatch sailors right from the decks, tossing their broken bodies into the hungry sea or spat lightning into the waters of those who'd fallen overboard to boil them alive among the wild waves.

She knew not why the Greyjoys had come to her aid- an alliance, a show of strength, Daenerys could not guess -but it was only the masters they were attacking. As the storm howled around them, rain soaking through her hair and clothes, dragon and rider sought out the vessel leading the krakens. Passing burning ships and drowning men they found a great longship amid the carnage, just beyond Meereen's shores. A huge ram was build upon the bow, wrought with curling tendrils of a kraken to match the sails.

Ghidorah flared out his wings, beating them up and down as he hovered and making the torrential rain around them ripple. Aboard the deck she could see a frantic flurry of people but what caught her attention were the two broad men standing aside a giant six foot long dragonhorn banded with red and gold steel, the bands etched with twisting glyphs of Valyrian. One man was fully clad in plate armour, with a helm carved in the tendril form of a kraken. The other was clad in black and gold robes, tattoos of twisting flames upon his face. A slight woman was gripping the horn, clothes and hair soaked to her body as the thunderous rain continued to pour down upon them.

Daenerys felt a great sense of unease the moment she saw the horn, and even knowing High Valryian the glyphs seemed to writhe like living things before her eyes and left her unable to read them. Ghidorah let out a warbling chirp, sensing his mother's mood and baring his bloodied fangs at the ship. The man in plate armour gestured something, but if he spoke Daenerys could not heard amidst the thunder and rain and wind.

But then the woman leaned forward and sounded the horn and all thoughts were blown from her mind.

Daenerys screamed, feeling as if the shriek of the horn was ripping its way right through into her brain, flesh burning and bones shuddering at the hideous noise. It was like the howl of a thousand souls burning, an undulation that seemed to tear its way right through her being as blood began to leak from her ears. On deck the woman collapsed, flesh charred and eyes melting embers.

Ghidorah's great body lurched as the sound tore through him as well, huge wings skipping a beat midair as he stumbled before he inhaled a great breath and screamed right back at the horn. His answering shriek rose in pitch, higher and higher until it drowned out the screaming horn, reverberating through the air like a clarion call and chasing the horn's bellow from the bay in an unnatural, reverberating screeching pitch. Even as the clashing sounds bellowed out beyond Meereen Ghidorah ceased his call and took in great triple breaths and blasted the ship below with all three heads, lightning splintering the deck and engulfing the men aboard in golden light. The horn glowed a brilliant white before it exploded with a scream like a child dying, a muffled explosion of air bursting free with it split to break the longship in half.

Head tipping backwards Daenerys' bloodshot eyes saw a fallen star shoot through the storm high above, leaving a trail of golden light before she lost her grip on Ghidorah's back and went tumbling towards the sea below.
