Jean wiped sweat from his brow as the group pushed deeper into the bioluminescent jungle. The canopy overhead glowed with soft blues and purples, turning the entire forest into a living light show. Strange flowers pulsed in rhythm with distant animal calls, and the air smelled like sweet nectar mixed with ozone. It would have been beautiful if Jean wasn't constantly worried about accidentally claiming the entire ecosystem as his personal dominion.
Just keep it normal, he reminded himself, carefully stepping over a glowing root. Admire the scenery. Collect samples. Don't gesture dramatically. Don't laugh. Definitely don't cough on anything that might bloom into a new flag.
Varak led the way with enthusiastic axe swings, clearing vines like they had personally offended him. "This realm is worthy of your attention, my Lord! The very plants seem to brighten in your presence. A fitting garden for the Warmonger's future victories."
Lirael moved like liquid shadow between the trees, collecting samples and noting everything. "The flora reacts to residual mantle energy. Some vines curl into protective patterns when you pass. I've cataloged seventeen new species already. Your mere walk is scientific discovery."
Elara stayed close to Jean, occasionally sending small healing pulses to counter the humidity's effect on his stress levels. "You're trying so hard to be a normal tourist. It's almost working. Just don't point at anything interesting."
Jean managed a tired grin. "That's the plan. Peaceful exploration. Maybe sketch a map. No legendary incidents."
Of course, the universe had already prepared the next act of the comedy.
High above in the glowing canopy, Viper the assassin continued his silent pursuit. His artifacts kept him completely invisible and undetectable. After yesterday's near-misses, he was more cautious than ever, convinced the Warmonger was playing an elaborate game of cat and mouse.
Viper watched from a high branch as Jean stopped to examine a cluster of glowing berries. The Warmonger plucked one, studied it, and then for no apparent reason tossed it lightly upward to watch it float.
The berry sailed in a perfect arc and bounced off a leaf directly above Viper's position.
Viper froze, heart hammering. He knows. He's toying with me again. Testing my position with casual throws.
Jean, completely oblivious, chuckled softly. "They really do float. Like tiny balloons. Cool."
The soft laugh echoed through the trees. Viper's grip tightened on his dagger. The psychological games continue. He laughs while marking my location. The Warmonger is truly without equal in cruelty.
But after long, tense moments of observation, Viper confirmed it was just idle curiosity. No direct attack. No killing intent. Just… weird behavior once again.
He continued trailing them, more paranoid than before.
Later, as the group crossed a small glowing stream, Jean decided to test a basic energy pulse he'd been practicing. He flicked his wrist gently toward the water. A small, controlled burst created a beautiful arc of light that skipped across the surface like a stone.
One of the "skips" sent a splash of glowing water high into the air, directly toward Viper's hiding spot in the branches above.
The assassin shifted silently at the last second, the water grazing his cloak and causing the faintest shimmer.
Jean blinked. "Huh. Five skips. Getting better at this."
Lirael noted it down immediately. "A new ranged technique? The water itself becomes a weapon under your guidance."
Veil's mind raced. He's adjusting his aim based on my movements. He's playing with me like prey.
During a short rest in a small clearing, Jean picked up a smooth, glowing pebble from the ground. He skipped it across a nearby pool out of boredom. The pebble bounced beautifully, the final skip ricocheting off a rock and flying straight toward the upper canopy where Viper was perched.
The assassin barely dodged, the pebble grazing his shoulder.
Jean scratched his head. "Six bounces again. Nice."
Elara raised an eyebrow. "You're getting suspiciously good at that."
Viper was now sweating under his artifacts. He's deliberately missing by inches. Psychological torment. The Warmonger knows exactly where I am and is enjoying the hunt.
But careful observation showed no direct gaze, no killing intent. Just another coincidental near-miss.
As night deepened and the jungle glowed even brighter, Jean decided to practice with the bow again. "Just a few shots," he muttered. "Improve my aim. Nothing fancy."
He nocked an arrow, aimed at a distant glowing fruit high in the trees, and released.
The arrow flew true again, passing within a hair's breadth of Viper's position before embedding in the target.
Jean lowered the bow, genuinely surprised. "Whoa. That was close to perfect."
Veil clung to the branch, breathing hard. He's escalating the game. A deliberate near-miss with the bow. He wants me to know he can end me anytime.
Yet again, after tense observation, Viper confirmed it was just exceptional luck. The Warmonger wasn't looking directly at him.
The assassin steeled his resolve. I will not break. The mission continues. One clean strike wirh my corrosive dagger and this nightmare ends.
As the group made camp for the night, surrounded by the beautiful glowing jungle, Jean stretched and muttered, "This place is actually relaxing. No disasters yet."
Elara smirked beside him. "Give it time. With you, relaxation is just the calm before the legend."
High above in the canopy, Viper watched them settle in, dagger ready, convinced he was being psychologically tortured by the most dangerous being in existence.
The glowing jungle night continued its peaceful symphony.
And the invisible assassin waited, more determined than ever.
