Public appearances only amplified Charlotte's already considerable ego.
Whenever the family went out crowds would gather. They would line the streets, pressing against barriers, holding up signs and banners and handmade gifts.
And they would cheer.
"Lady Charlotte! Lady Charlotte, over here!"
"She's so adorable!"
"Look at her little wave! I'm going to die!"
"Princess Charlotte! We love you!"
Charlotte, naturally, ate it up.
She waved at the crowds, blew kisses to her admirers, stopped to chat with anyone who approached her.
She posed for photographs with the patience of a seasoned celebrity, signed autographs with the flourish of a royal, and accepted gifts with the graciousness of a queen.
"Thank you so much!" She said to an elderly woman who had presented her with a hand-knitted scarf. "Did you make this yourself? It's absolutely beautiful!"
The woman nearly fainted with joy.
