The guild hall of Fairy Tail was as loud and chaotic as ever.
Standing near the request board, Lucy Heartfilia clutched a glass of juice in both hands, her eyes wide as she watched a blur of bodies, magic, and questionable life choices explode across the floor. It had been about a week since Natsu had dragged her—literally—into the guild, and even now, her brain could barely keep up with the daily madness.
A chair flew overhead. A fireball followed right on its heels. Then Gray retaliated with an ice hammer that shattered into a cascade of glittering, dangerous shards.
Just another Thursday morning.
Lucy let out a helpless, breathless laugh. "I still can't believe I actually joined Fairy Tail…"
Behind the bar, Mirajane looked up from polishing a mug, her ever-gentle smile glowing like sunlight. "Oh? Already feeling sentimental, Lucy?"
Lucy turned to her, her cheeks dusting with pink. "Well—it's just… everyone here is so lively. And kind. And… completely unpredictable."
Mira giggled, a hand pressed to her cheek. "That's Fairy Tail for you. I'm just glad you're adjusting so well."
"I've met almost everyone by now!" Lucy said enthusiastically, ticking them off in her head. "Natsu is… well, Natsu. Gray is nice, even though he keeps forgetting his clothes. Happy is adorable, and everyone else has been so welcoming!"
"Oh?" Mira leaned over the bar, her blue eyes turning playful. "Almost everyone?"
Lucy blinked. "There's more?"
Mira began ticking names off her fingers. "Erza, Laxus, the Thunder God Tribe, Mystogan, Gildarts… and Kai."
Lucy froze, the sheer scale of the guild hitting her all over again. "Wait, there are that many heavy-hitters? I've never even heard those names!"
"That's completely normal," Mira chirped.
"That's… normal?"
"Mhm. Some people rarely stay in the guild for long, like Gildarts. Others actively avoid attention, like Mystogan. Laxus only stops by to take high-level missions." Her voice softened, a hint of amusement coloring her tone. "And then there's Kai, who has serious presence problems."
"Presence problems?" Lucy echoed, raising an eyebrow.
"Presence problems," Mira nodded solemnly. "People completely forget he exists, even when he's standing right next to them. He moves quietly, avoids confrontation, and somehow slips past everyone without meaning to—or maybe he just likes the peace and quiet."
Lucy's brows knitted. "So… he's shy?"
Mira burst out laughing. "Oh, no. Not even close. You'll see."
Before Lucy could ask her to elaborate, a sudden, deafening THUD shook the entire guild hall.
The impact was heavy enough to silence Natsu mid-tackle, freeze Gray halfway through stripping, and force Cana to lower her barrel of alcohol with genuine confusion. The chaotic roar of the guild died instantly.
Everyone turned toward the center of the room.
A sturdy wooden table had collapsed into a pile of splinters. A thick cloud of dust puffed into the air, and a pair of long legs stuck out from the wreckage.
From the center of the debris came a low, gravelly groan.
"Nnnh… what time is it…?"
Lucy gasped, taking a step forward. "Is someone hurt?!"
But the guild reacted with the total absence of panic reserved for people who dealt with unbelievable nonsense on a daily basis. Half the room broke into raucous laughter, while the other half just looked relieved.
"Ah! Kai's back!"
"That explains the noise!"
"Did he fall off the roof again?"
Lucy blinked rapidly. Roof? Again?!
A figure slowly emerged from the smashed wood like an exhausted sloth rising from hibernation. He pushed a heavy plank aside with one hand and sat up, his golden eyes half-lidded and unfocused, as if he were still caught in a dream.
Lucy took him in. He was tall—easily over six feet—broad-shouldered, lean, and possessing an athletic build that screamed danger. His dark brown hair was slicked back, save for a few rebellious bangs falling into his face. He wore dark wrappings around his forearms and calves, a string of heavy beads coiled around his right wrist, and a small engineering pouch hooked at his hip.
He blinked again, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
"What… time is it?" he repeated, his voice low, lazy, and rough with sleep.
Natsu burst into a howling laugh. "HAH! Kai! You fell through the ceiling again!"
Gray snorted, crossing his arms. "He sleeps like a dead bat. Seriously, who even naps on a roof?"
"Someone with absolutely no self-preservation instincts," Levy muttered, pushing up her glasses but smiling nonetheless.
Lucy whispered frantically to Mira, "That's him…?"
Mira nodded fondly. "Mhm. That's Kai."
Kai finally noticed the circle of guild members staring down at him. He looked entirely unimpressed by their lack of concern.
"Oh. Morning." He stretched, a massive yawn cracking his joints. "Didn't mean to drop in. The roof was comfy."
"You dropped in on a solid oak table," Cana scoffed, already grabbing empty mugs to start organizing bets. "It died a hero. Also, it's already past afternoon, dumbass. Can't even see the time now, can you?"
Kai offered Cana a lazy, two-finger salute. "Sure thing, heavy drinker. If I was as chronically unemployed as you, I'd probably be staring at the clock all day, too."
"What did you say?!" Cana barked, though she was grinning.
Natsu leaned forward eagerly, sniffing the air. "When'd you even get here? I didn't smell you come in!"
"I walked in right behind Mira this morning," Kai replied, gesturing vaguely toward the bar. "Was tired. Didn't feel like making a scene."
Mira blinked, her hand pausing on her mug.
"You walked in with me?"
"Yup."
"But… I didn't see you at all."
Kai shrugged, shifting to sit cross-legged in the splinters. "Tell me something I don't know."
Mira opened her mouth to question him further when Kai casually added, "And no, I didn't see you sneak into the second-floor bathroom to change out of your wet clothes earlier."
Mira's face went instantly pale. "I—YOU—?!"
Kai waved a hand dismissively. "Relax. I wasn't looking. Just passed by the hallway."
"I didn't even sense your magic!" Mira stammered, a rare bead of sweat rolling down her cheek. "How do you always sneak around like a ghost?"
Lucy leaned close to the barmaid. "Is he… actually a ghost?"
"No," Mira whispered, thoroughly rattled. "Just acts like one."
Gray walked over, scowling down at the seated mage. "Creepy as hell, man. Who falls through a roof and just rolls with it? You really are a freak."
Kai slowly turned his gaze toward Gray, leveling him with the deadest, driest look Lucy had ever seen.
Gray, who at that exact moment was wearing absolutely nothing but his boxers, blinked back.
Kai drawled, "I don't want to hear the word 'creepy' from a man who can't keep his pants on for longer than ten minutes."
The guild roared with laughter.
Natsu laughed the loudest, slapping his knee. "Hey, the Ice Stripper actually has a point! You're a total weirdo, Kai!"
Then, Kai vanished.
He didn't run. He didn't move fast. He simply flickered out of existence, leaving a faint shadow behind that vanished a millisecond later.
Lucy's jaw dropped. "W-what—?!"
Half a second later, Kai reappeared near the mission board. In his hand, he was casually dangling a small piece of fabric.
"A-AHHHH!" Lucy, Mira, and Levy shrieked in unison, covering their eyes as half the girls in the guild pointed in horror.
Gray suddenly felt a very cold breeze. He looked down, realized he was entirely stark naked, and panicked.
"MY UNDERWEAR!!"
He cupped both hands over himself, his face turning bright red. "HOW?!"
Natsu howled, pointing a finger. "Gahahaha!! Gray! You're completely naked! You lost to a shadow freak!"
Natsu's laughter cut off into a sudden, choked gasp.
Kai looked at Natsu, his expression completely serene. "Were you saying something to me, Natsu?"
Natsu covered his mouth, frantically shaking his head in terror.
Desperate, Gray grabbed a nearby table and held it up as a makeshift shield, roaring, "I'M GONNA KILL YOU, YOU SHADOW BASTARD!!"
Kai stuck his tongue out. "Come and take 'em back, Ice Princess."
The fight was on.
Gray charged, barefoot and furious. Cana cheered, instantly slamming a bag of Jewels onto the counter. "100 Jewels on Gray!"
"500 on Kai!" Macao yelled.
"10,000 on Gray losing horribly!" Wakaba countered.
Kai skipped backward, his footsteps light, rhythmic, and playful. He danced through the chaos, weaving between chairs and dodging flying mugs with casual grace.
Lucy stared in utter disbelief. "How does someone that big move like that?!"
"Shadow Monk combat style," Levy whispered, peering over her book. "Don't ever fight him hand-to-hand unless you want to donate your pride to the floorboards."
Humiliated and desperate, Gray channeled his magic. "Ice-Make: Floor!!"
The wooden planks coated over with a thick layer of ice, gleaming dangerously. Kai's next step slipped, his footing giving out beneath him.
"Aha! GOT YOU!" Gray lunged, aiming a heavy fist at Kai's face.
For a split second, Kai tilted backward, his balance entirely gone. But as he fell, he smirked. Twisting his torso, he executed a flawless, one-handed flip, launching himself off the icy floor and directly over Gray's head.
Mid-jump, Gray had no time to compensate. Kai's feet landed squarely on Gray's shoulders.
"Oh no," Gray muttered.
With Kai riding his back like a lazy surfer, Gray's momentum sent him skidding face-first across the ice. Kai idly grabbed a fistful of Gray's dark hair, lifting his head just enough to keep the poor guy's face from scraping along the frozen wood.
Levy dropped her book, laughing hysterically. Cana nearly fell off her stool. Natsu was rolling on the floor, tears pricking his eyes. "K-Kai… Gray… y-you're both such losers… pfft—"
Thwack.
Natsu's laughter ended in a violent gag. With a casual flick of his wrist, Kai had hurled Gray's stolen underwear directly into Natsu's wide-open mouth.
Natsu's enhanced Dragon Slayer senses registered the reality of the situation a second too late. His face turned a deep shade of emerald green. He yanked the cloth out, gagged violently, and collapsed onto the floor, unconscious from sheer psychological damage. The surrounding guild members stared in a mixture of horror and profound pity.
Just before Gray hit the far wall, Kai hopped off his back, landing gracefully on his feet. Gray hit the baseboards in a heap, groaning miserably.
The guild erupted into applause and cheers. Kai gave a mock, theatrical bow.
Lucy trembled slightly, looking at the twitching Gray and the comatose Natsu. "Is this… normal?"
Mira sighed, placing a hand on her cheek. "I'm afraid so."
Somehow, Gray dragged himself back to his feet, weaponizing his pure shame into adrenaline. "You little—!!" He lunged again, throwing a desperate left hook.
Kai didn't even blink.
SLAP.
Kai's right hand parried the strike with casual, rhythmic precision.
Gray roared, throwing a faster right hook.
SLAP.
Kai redirected that one too. But instead of letting Gray reset, Kai seized Gray's wrist, pulled him forward, and executed a swift, brutal backhand that cracked against Gray's cheek. The impact spun Gray around, dazing him.
Before Gray's body could even register the pain, Kai shifted his weight, his footwork flawless. He drove a powerful front kick straight into Gray's solar plexus.
WHAM.
Gray flew backward like a ragdoll, smashing through one table, then a second, and finally a third before landing in a tangled, groaning pile of limbs and splinters. The entire exchange had taken less than three seconds.
A stunned silence fell over the room.
"...yeah, he definitely should have used magic," Macao whispered.
"Even Laxus doesn't engage Kai in a fistfight," Wakaba muttered, shaking his head.
Lucy was utterly speechless. "He's… he's terrifying."
Mira pinched the bridge of her nose, surveying the freshly generated carnage: shattered tables, cracked flooring, a green-faced Natsu, and an unconscious, naked Gray.
She exhaled slowly. "Kai," she said, her voice dangerously sweet.
Kai looked over, completely unbothered as he dusted off his wrappings. "Hmm?"
"You know you're going to have to pay for the repairs, right? All of them."
Kai blinked slowly, processing the request. Then, he shrugged. "I'll do it eventually."
A collective groan echoed through the guild hall. Mira's eye twitched slightly.
"Kai… your 'eventually' is going to haunt my nightmares," Mira sighed, though a small smile cracked through her exasperation.
He offered her a lazy, charming grin. "It already does, White. It already does."
The tension broke, and the guild burst into laughter. Even Lucy couldn't help but chuckle.
Mira turned to the celestial mage, shaking her head fondly. "Lucy?"
Lucy jumped. "Y-yes?!"
"Welcome officially," Mira said, gesturing with open arms to the beautifully chaotic disaster zone around them. "To Fairy Tail."
Lucy looked over the room—Cana collecting her betting winnings, Macao and Wakaba dragging Gray out of the wreckage, Happy trying to wake Natsu up, and Kai already looking around for another spot to take a nap.
She smiled, a warmth settling deep in her chest.
"Yeah," Lucy whispered, her smile widening. "This… definitely feels like home."
