Chapter 38 – Caravan Raid
The prosperity of Goldbear Territory had become the talk of the entire Kingdom of Fae Wood. What was once a struggling frontier fiefdom was now a thriving economic powerhouse, its success sparking both admiration and dangerous envy among nobles and merchants alike.
Every week, heavily laden caravans departed from the bustling warehouses of the Goldbear Fusion Company. They carried valuable cargoes that commanded premium prices across the realm: enchanted leather armor that self-repaired minor damage, Blade Ward shields capable of deflecting arrows and low-level spells, Fire Bolt crossbows that launched magical projectiles, acid-resistant equipment, healing bandages reinforced with *Mending* enchantments, potent potions brewed from rare Mushroom Grove Dungeon ingredients, and high-quality monster materials harvested sustainably from the dungeon farm.
Under normal circumstances, these goods would travel safely under the watchful protection of well-equipped Goldbear guards. But unchecked prosperity had also attracted the attention of greed. And somewhere in the shadows, a new enemy had begun to move against the rising power.
The Goldbear Trade Route connecting Goldbear Territory to Valebridge had rapidly become one of the busiest and most profitable roads in northern Fae Wood. On this particular day, three sturdy wagons loaded with merchandise worth over five thousand gold coins made their way steadily along the ancient Forest Road.
Leading the caravan was Veteran Guard Captain Borin, a grizzled warrior with decades of experience. Flanking him rode two veteran First-Class caravan guards, while twenty well-armed Goldbear soldiers—equipped with the latest Fusion Company gear—marched in disciplined formation behind the wagons.
The journey had been unusually peaceful.
Too peaceful.
Captain Borin suddenly raised his hand. "Stop the caravan!"
The wagons creaked to a halt. One of the younger soldiers looked at him questioningly. "Captain?"
"The forest…" Borin muttered, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "It's too quiet. No birds. No insects. Not even the wind rustling the leaves."
Years of surviving ambushes and bandit raids screamed a single warning in his mind: *Something is very wrong.*
Without warning—**BOOM!**
The ground beneath the lead wagon erupted in a violent explosion. A massive fireball, triggered by hidden explosive runes, engulfed the front of the caravan. Two horses screamed and fell instantly. The first wagon overturned with a thunderous crash, spilling crates across the road.
"Enemy attack!" Captain Borin roared.
Arrows whistled from every direction as black-clothed figures burst from the underbrush. Thirty… forty… nearly sixty attackers materialized with terrifying coordination. Each wore featureless masks and moved with the precision of professional soldiers rather than opportunistic bandits.
Borin's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Not bandits… Mercenaries."
"Raise shields! Defensive formation!" Borin commanded.
The Goldbear guards reacted instantly, forming a tight protective circle around the remaining wagons. Blade Ward enchantments flared to life across dozens of shields, causing the metal to shimmer with protective magical light. The first volley of arrows bounced harmlessly away, sparking against the barriers.
The masked attackers seemed momentarily surprised by the quality of the defenses. Their leader barked an order: "Use magic! Break their line!"
Three apprentice-level wizards stepped forward from the treeline. Fireballs and jagged ice spikes rained down upon the defenders. The Goldbear soldiers answered in kind, unleashing a devastating counter-volley from their enchanted crossbows.
*Fire Bolt!*
*Acid Bolt!*
Streaks of magical projectiles lit up the forest road. Several mercenaries fell screaming, their bodies burned or corroded. But the attackers had planned the ambush meticulously. Hidden illusion barriers distorted the soldiers' aim and created false targets. More enemies poured in from both flanks, attempting to overwhelm the formation.
Captain Borin quickly realized the grim truth. "They're not trying to slaughter us—they're after the cargo!"
While the fierce battle raged at the front of the caravan, a smaller, stealthier squad slipped around to the rear. Instead of engaging the defenders, they moved with practiced efficiency, prying open storage crates and transferring high-value Goldbear merchandise into prepared dimensional storage bags.
Their movements were swift, professional, and eerily calm. Within minutes, nearly half the valuable cargo had vanished into spatial storage.
One of the masked wizards overseeing the theft smiled beneath his hood. "The client will be very pleased with this haul."
Back at Goldbear Estate, one of Glic's enhanced Giant Eagles let out a piercing cry through the Beast Bond connection. The emergency alert reached Glic instantly.
He shot to his feet. "The caravan!"
Without hesitation, he activated the Combat Command Module, issuing rapid orders through the System.
"Myco-Hounds! Dire Wolves! Giant Eagles! Mobilize!"
The entire estate burst into organized chaos. Captain Reinhardt personally led thirty mounted guards racing toward the Forest Road at full speed. But despite their haste…
They arrived too late.
The attackers had already vanished like ghosts. Smoke still curled from the smoldering remains of the overturned wagon. Broken crates and scattered merchandise littered the road. Dead horses lay among the wreckage. Several injured Goldbear soldiers were being treated by Company healers using the very potions they had been transporting.
Captain Borin knelt before Glic, head bowed in shame. "My Lord… I have failed you."
Glic placed a hand on the veteran's shoulder and helped him rise. "You survived. That is what matters most. Your quick thinking saved lives and limited the damage."
Glic surveyed the battlefield with a calculating eye. The attack showed no random destruction. Casualties among the guards were minimal. Only the most valuable cargo had been targeted. This was professional work—very professional.
Glic crouched beside a burned wagon fragment. He cast *Detect Magic*, his eyes glowing faintly as he analyzed the lingering residues.
Illusion magic. Fire. Wind. Space Magic. Multiple schools working in perfect harmony. This was no ordinary bandit operation. Someone had invested significant resources.
The System chimed:
> **Investigation Quest**
> **Caravan Raid**
> **Objective:** Identify the mastermind behind the attack.
> **Reward:** Intelligence Points +300, Investigation Module Experience, Possible Hidden Reward.
By evening, Mira—the sharp-eyed intelligence officer—returned from questioning nearby villages. Her expression was grim as she placed a broken arrow shaft on the table.
"Nobody saw the attackers' faces clearly. They were too well-disciplined. But we found this."
Captain Reinhardt immediately recognized the tiny silver engraving on the shaft. "Silver Hawk Mercenary Company."
Sariah frowned deeply. "They're one of the most expensive outfits in the region. Hiring sixty elite mercenaries would cost thousands of gold coins. This wasn't a simple robbery. Someone wealthy and powerful is orchestrating this."
---
Three days later, another urgent report arrived from Goldbear spies embedded in the notorious Dark Fae Market. The messenger looked visibly nervous.
"My Lord… some of our stolen merchandise has already appeared for sale."
The room fell silent.
The spy continued, "Blade Ward shields, Fusion armor, Fire Bolt crossbows—they're being auctioned off as rare goods."
Captain Reinhardt slammed his fist on the table. "They dare sell our own products!"
Sariah looked visibly worried. "If counterfeit versions start flooding the market, our reputation could be severely damaged."
Glic, however, remained remarkably calm. A faint, knowing smile touched his lips. "No. They've actually made a critical mistake."
Everyone turned to him in surprise.
"Every Goldbear product contains a tiny, hidden identification rune," Glic explained. "I had them incorporated from the very beginning of production."
Sariah blinked. "When did you…?"
"No one noticed because they're microscopic and concealed beneath the primary enchantments," Glic continued. "Impossible to detect without *Detect Magic* at close range, and nearly impossible to duplicate without knowing the exact method."
He leaned forward. "If our stolen goods are entering the market, we can track them. Every single piece."
Captain Reinhardt's eyes widened with realization. "You planned for the possibility of theft?"
Glic—formerly Edward McAllister in his previous life—had lived in a world where industrial espionage and corporate theft were everyday realities. Implementing anti-counterfeiting and tracking measures had been second nature to him.
"You should always assume your competitors will try to steal your secrets," he said quietly.
Rather than rushing to recover the stolen goods, Glic issued surprising new orders.
"Leave them in circulation for now. I want every stolen item sold. I want the buyers, the middlemen, the financiers—everyone involved in this network."
Mira's lips curved into a predatory smile. "So… we're going to hunt the entire chain."
"Exactly," Glic confirmed. "Let them think they've won. They've only handed us the perfect bait for a much larger trap."
Deep within the shadowy depths of the Dark Fae Market, a high-stakes auction was underway. One by one, authentic Goldbear products sold for astonishing prices. Merchants bid aggressively. Minor nobles eagerly competed. Even several wandering wizards purchased samples, hoping to reverse-engineer the innovative enchantments.
Watching from a private, heavily warded viewing room sat a mysterious figure cloaked in black robes, his face hidden in shadow. Beside him stood the masked leader of the Silver Hawk Mercenary Company.
"Our mission was a complete success," the mercenary reported.
The hooded figure nodded slowly. "And the inventor behind these items?"
"Still unknown for now."
The figure tapped his armrest thoughtfully. "No matter. Once we understand how these products are made, the Goldbear Fusion Company will become irrelevant."
He rose and gazed down at the bustling auction floor. "Begin Phase Two."
Far away, in the safety of his workshop at Goldbear Estate, Glic studied a glowing runic map generated by the System. Tiny points of light representing the stolen goods were spreading across the kingdom. One cluster, however, stood out prominently.
Nearly a third of the stolen cargo had been funneled to a single hidden location on the outskirts of the capital. The System marked it with a ominous crimson icon.
> **Hidden Objective Updated**
> Trace the stolen goods to their ultimate source.
> **Warning:** Probability of discovering a hostile organization: 94%.
Glic smiled faintly, his eyes gleaming with strategic anticipation.
"They thought they stole my merchandise. In reality… they've shown me exactly where to strike next."
