Chapter 52 - CHAPTER 51

CHAPTER 51

"PAINFUL LIMITATION"

"If I were Superman, my kryptonite would be….."

Just as the excitement peaked, the buzzer sounded, and the announcement blared through out the arena, "Green team, members changed!"

Two players were being substituted. The first was Efe, replacing Felicia to rejoin the Iron Walls' lineup. The second substitution, however, took evcryone by surprise. Replacing Ebere, donning the number 16 green jersey of Boluwatife Oluwole High School Basketball Team, also known as the Iron Walls and the team's captain, was none other than the mysterious and highly anticipated Ronke

As Ronke stepped onto the court majestically, an air of suspense enveloped the arena. Spectators and players alike couldn't help but wonder if she's fit to play

Ronke walked majestically onto the court, her expression that of a serious warrior. As she approached Tosin, her gaze remained steady and determined. Tosin, noticing the intensity in Ronke's eyes, began to speak, but her words were cut short by the sheer focus etched on Ronke's face as she walked past

"Tosin?" Oluchi called out from behind, her voice tinged with curiosity and concern

"Oluchi, I'm sorry," Tosin replied, her voice a mix of determination and competitive spirit, "Starting right now, we can't afford to let our guard down for even a second,"

"Right!" Oluchi agreed, her own resolve strengthening in response to Tosin's words

Among the sea of spectators, conversation buzzed as they shared their observations and speculations about the thrilling match unfolding before them

"Ronke is finally on the court," Spectator 1 commented, his eyes fixed on Ronke

"Yes, but I'm more worried about her than the game itself," Spectator 2 chimed in, concern laced on her voice. "Is she going to be okay?"

Spectator 3 nodded in agreement, "I'm worried about her too. Is she fit to play?"

"Even if she is fit to play, what can she possibly do in a mere 3 minutes with an 18-point deficit? This game is as good as over!" Spectator said, highlighting the point gap between the teams

"Exactly. An 18-point gap is too much. Even professional teams in the NBA find it difficult to come back from such a huge deficit in 3 full quarters. We're talking about 3 minutes! I don't know what the coach is thinking, but for me, this game is over." Spectator 5 said,

Meanwhile on the court, Ronke's teammates tossed her the ball, their trust in their Captain unshakeable

"Let's close the gap!" Ronke urged, her voice ringing with determination as she led the Iron Walls' attack against the Queens' defense, "Let's start our counterattack!"

"YEAH!" The Iron Walls roared in unison, taking their position and preparing for the onslaught

Oluchi, observing Ronke's every move as well as the entire Iron Walls team, knew that she had to step up her defense to counter the mysterious foe standing before her, "Ronke… If she is the Captain, why isn't she a starter? Why hasn't she played for 2 years? Why do the Iron Walls have so much confidence the moment she stepped onto the court? It's as if she is their ace," Oluchi pondered, her mind racing. "if she is their ace, I can't let my guard down. I have to stop her!"

Ronke, sensing the mounting tension, made a subtle gesture to signal her impeding move.

Oluchi, recognising the cue, braced herself, "Here she comes," she thought, her muscle tensing in anticipation.

With a sudden burst of speed, Ronke executed a swift fake, dashing past Oluchi and creating just enough space for her shot. The ball sailed through the air, a perfect arc that seemed to freeze time itself, before swiahing cleanly through the net

The crowd erupted in a deafening roar of applause and cheers, their excitement palpable as Ronke's triumph reverberated through the arena.

"YEAH!!!" Ronke screamed, her voice filled with a mix of joy, satisfaction, and a will to fight back as she and her teammates returned to their defensive positions

Oluchi, frustration etched on her face, clicked her tongue in annoyance. "Tch," she muttered under her breath

Tosin, sensing her teammate's dismay, offered words of encouragement. "Don't worry about it, Oluchi. If they score, we'll score back!" she urged, her voice filled with conviction

"Yeah!" The Queens chorused, their spirits bolstered by their Captain's unwavering faith in their abilities

Eno propelled the ball towards Oluchi, her attention momentum diverted as she jogged along. However, in a flash, Ronke expertly intercepted the pass, redirecting the ball towards the hoop and leaping gracefully into the air. The crowd held their breath as the airborne ball ricocheted off the rim, only to sail above the court once more. With a swift, powerful move, Ronke slammed the ball into the hoop, eliciting an explosive roar of applause from the audience

Watching the events unfold from her position on the bench, Mrs. Lawal's eyes widened in shock as memories of a past conversation with Tosin resurfaced

Flashback

"Come in," Mrs. Lawal's voice called from inside. Tosin entered, and closed the door behind her

"Coach, you wanted to see me?" Tosin inquired, her heart thumping rapidly in her chest

"Yes, please take a seat, Tosin," Mrs. Lawal said, her gaze fixed on Tosin's face. Tosin sat down, her sense heightened. "I invited you here because I wanted to speak with you privately," Mrs. Lawal continued. "Your words during the training didn't align with your gesture and actions. The Number 16 from Boluwatiife Oluwole High School….. You're familiar with her, aren't you?"

Tosin's mind raced as she hesitated. "Coach, I don't know her personally," she said

Mrs. Lawal's eyes narrowed, scrutinizing Tosin's face. "I can tell you're holding back, Tosin. Please, be honest with me. Who is she?"

Tosin took a deep breathe, steeling herself. "Coach, I assure you that I'm being truthful. I don't know her. But I've crossed path with her once"

Mrs. Lawal's interest was piqued. "When?" she inquired

"This morning," Tosin replied, her voice steady, "I went for my usual early morning jog and stumbled upon an abandoned court in the estate. A street basketball tournament was underway, and she was there, playing against boys"

Mrs. Lawal's eyes grew wider still, "Playing against boys?"

Tosin nodded in affirmation. "Yes, she was the sole girl on the court but she outplayed them all. When the tournament concluded, she vanished without a word. I'm shocked to discover she attends Boluwatife Oluwole High School and that someone with her skill level hasn't played in two years. There must be more to the story than meets the eye"

Mrs. Lawal's expression turned contemplative. "Tosin, given her apparent skill and our existing data, doesn't this suggest our opponents are exceptionally strong?"

Tosin nodded slowly in disagreement, "Coach, this girl's defensive skills rival Tolu's. She steals effortlessly. But when it comes to offensive plays, she's on par with Cynthia"

Mrs. Lawal's eyes widened in shock, "What?!" She consulted her tablet, scanning the information. "Her name is Ronke Adetola"

"I see," Tosin said, her expression neutral

Back to the present

"Tosin, you were right," Mrs. Lawal mused, her concern mounting. "If we can't stop Ronke…. This could spell trouble for us."

The cacophony of cheers and spirited shouts continued to fill the arena, as the spectators became increasingly invested in the thrilling match

"Another steal!" a voice bellowed from the crowd

Jolted from her thoughts by the fervent declaration, Mrs. Lawal redirected her focus to the court, where Ronke had once again demonstrated her formidable defensive skills, this time snatching the ball from Oluchi's grasp

"Tsk," Oluchi clicked her tongue in exasperation, her frustration palpable

Capitalizing on the opportunity, Ronke sprinted towards the hoop, executing a lightning-fast layup. The atmosphere grew increasingly electric as the entire arena cheered in support of the Iron Walls, their fervor and excitement reaching new heights

"Ronke, you can do it!" Spectator 1 shouted enthusiastically

"Come on, girl, keep fighting!" Spectator 2 added, his voice ringing with determination

"Show the Queens who the real Queen is!" Spectator 3 yelled, their passion echoed by countless others in the crowd

As the cacophony of support for the Iron Walls crescendoed, Mrs. Lawal signaled for a timeout, recognizing the urgent need to reassess their strategy

On the Queens' bemch, a mix of shock and frustration permeated the air. Oluchi, voicing her concern, declared, "Ronke is a beast!"

Tosin, a hint of amusement in her voice, responded, "Hah, I told you. I knew she'd be trouble."

Mercy, her curiosity piqued by Ronke's impressive performance, questioned, "How is she not a member of the Victorious Varsity if she is on their level?"

"Beats me," Tosin replied, "But she still hasn't shown us everything she is capable of. What she's done in a few seconds is just a warm-up"

Mrs. Lawal, her mind racing to formulate a new strategy, asked, "What are we going to do?"

"Well, Ronke might be a high level player when it comes to steals, but so is Tolu here," Tosin explained, glancing at her teammate, "As for her attacks, we can handle them. We are stronger than we were last year when Cynthia toyed with us. So, we can handle Ronke's attacks. If we can do that much, then we can defeat Cynthia"

"With a nod of approval, Mrs. Lawal placed her trust in her team, saying, "Alright, guys, I leave the rest to you guys,"

"YEAH!" The Queens chorused, their collective resolve strengthened

"However, she's been heavily handicapped," Tosin thought to herself, a hint of trepidation in her thoughts, "Guys, let's go!" she ordered

"YEAH!" The Queens responded in unison, their determination unwavering

Both teams returned to the court, the final two minutes looming ahead. The crowd, now fervently supporting the Iron Walls, awaited the thrilling conclusion with bated breath

As play resumed, the Queens took possession, Oluchi leading the charge. However Ronke's defensive prowess proved insurmountable yet again, as she swiftly intercepted Oluchi's pass

"Tsk," Oluchi clicked her tongue in frustration, her annoyance resurfacing

Seizing the opportunity, Ronke sprinted towards the hoop, executing a rapid layup. The atmosphere grew even more charged as the crowd cheered the Iron Walls' Captain on, their fervor reaching new heights

As the gane resumed, the Queens found themselves in possession of the ball, with Oluchi leading the attack. However, Ronke's impenetrable defensive stance halted Oluchi's progress, causing a ripple of tension to spread across the court

"Come!" Ronke commanded, her voice ringing with confince and determination

The immense exerted from Ronke's defense, coupled with the deafening cheers of the arena, began to take its toll on Oluchi causing her composure to falter. Sensing the opportunity, Ronke deftly tapped the ball out of Oluchi's hands, seiaing possession and creating a swift breakaway

"Counter!" Ronke yelled, sprinting towards the hoop with unwavering focus. Just as it seemed like nothing could stop her, a desperate and determined Queen, radiating the aura of a hungry beast, intervened

"I'm counting on you to stop Ronke's dominance." Oluchi thought fervently, her eyes locked on the scene unfolding before her

In a synchronized display of support, the Queens – both those on the bench and those on the court – screamed in unison, "TOSIN!!!"

"Sorry, Ronke, but this is as far as you go!" Tosin declared, her expression a mix of seriousness and composure.

Ronke, frustration evident in her eyes, clicked her tongue, "Tsk," she muttered under her breath

Seizing the opening created by Ronke's momentary distraction, Tolu swiftly tapped the ball out of Ronke's grasp from behind

"Oh, right," Tosin said with a cheeky grin, "Ronke, your defense is terrifying because of your ability to steal the ball. But you are not the only one with that amazing skill – Tolu is extraordinarily talented at stealing the ball as well

Just as Tosin prepared to sprint towards the hoop, Ronke suddenly collapsed to the ground, clutching her chest in pain. Tosin froze, unsure of whether to join the attack or assist her fallen opponent

Meanwhile, Oluchi led the Queens' attack, with Mercy, Tolu, and Eno joining forces against Helen, Miracle, Peju, and Efe. Oluchi passed the ball to Mercy, who quickly tossed it to Eno in the paint. Eno attempted to maneuver around Efe's defense, but the sight of her Captain writhing in pain fueled Efe's determination, leading to a forceful block that sent the ball out of bound

"Captain!" Efe screamed, as she and her teammates rushed to Ronke's side, their concern for their leader outweighing any other considerations

Tosin, her reservations set aside, helped Ronke to her feet

Witnessing the Queens' decision to continue playing despite Ronke's fall, the Spectators became increasingly agitated. Criticisms rained down from all corners of the arena, creating a cacophony of disapproval that seemed to shake the very foundation of the arena

"What was that? The Queens are a bunch of jerks!" Spectator 1 exclaimed, his voice brimming with disdain. "A player was down and they couldn't stop the play? They are heartless!"

Amother Spectator joined the chorus of criticism, shouting, "How could they be so callous? They should have shown some respect and stopped the game!"

The entire arena united in their condemnation of the Queens, their once-enthusiastic cheers now replaced by a barrage of jeers and boos. The sudden shift in the crowd's demeanor added another layer of tension to the already charged atmosphere, creating an almost palpable sense of hostility

The criticism shocked Tosin as she helped Ronke back on her feet

"Hey, Tosin," Ronke whispered, her voice low and strained. "You let your guard down back there, didn't you? Didn't I tell you not to let your guard down for even a second?!"

Tosin's eyes widemed in shock at Ronke's words, "But-"

"No buts!" Ronke interrupted, her voice growing stronger. "This is a battleground! Come at me like you want to kill me! Like you want to destroy this heart of mine!"

With that, Ronke turned and walked away, leaving Tosin to contemplate her words

"Captain, are you okay?" Efe asked, her concern evident in her voice

"Yes, I'm fine," Ronke replied, her gaze now fixed on her team's bench. She noticed Coach Rose preparing to make a substitution and quickly waved her hands, signaling that she was fine. Coach Rose, visibly relieved, changed her mind

As the game continued, Tosin found herself lost in thought, Ronke's words echoed through her mind and stirring memories of a past conversation with Miracle

\|\*

Flashback

During a timeout initiated by the Iron Walls in the earlier stages of the game, Tosin seized the opportunity to engage Miracle in a brief yet consequential conversation

"May I hsve a moment of your time?" Inquired Tosin, her tone, a blend of urgency and discretion

"Tosin, the game is on the cusp of resuming," Miracle reminded her, a tinge of impatience in her voice

Undeterred, Tosin pressed on. "I know, but it won't take long. I promise"

With a sigh of resignation, Miracle relented, "Very well, Tosin, what is it?"

A sigh escaped Tosin's lips as she prepare to broach the subject. "I musr confess, my curiosity has been piqued"

"Partaining to what, precisely?" Miracle probed, her interest mildly aroused

Another sigh prefaced Tosin's elucidation. "It has come to my attention that Ronke has been absent from your team for a duration spanning two years. However, a recent encounter at a forsaken court revealed her exceptional prowess against male adversaries. Given her considerable abilities, I am led to believe that her extended hiatus cannot solely attributed to her inability to secure a position in the starting lineup. I am confident in this deduction and I beseech you to share the true rationale behind her absence"

Miracle's expression betrayed a sense of hesitation as she weighed Tosin's inquiry, "I must impart a confidence held solely by our team but I require your assurance that it shall not be divulged to others"

Without a moment's hesitation, Tosin pledged her discreation. "You have my most solemn vow. Not s soul shall be privy to the knowledge you choose to bestow upon me,"

Miracle's pause was punctuated by a deep breath, tears cascsded down her cheeks, "Pray tell, are you in good spirits?"

"Pray listen, Miracle," Tosin implored, her voice laced with gravity, "You have my undivided attention"

"Ronke is encumbered by a cardiovascular affliction," Miracle cpnfessed, the weight of her revelation hanging heavily in the air

"What?! Are you serious?!" Tosin's eyes widened in shock and horror

"Yes, she has been like that ever… ouch!" Miracle winced as a knock landed on her head. "Hey, what'd you do….?" Her expression changed as she saw who had struck her

"What the heck are you telling Tosin, huh?" Ronke yelled, her face stern

"I'm sorry, Captain," Miracle quickly apologized, shrinking under Ronke's intimidating presence

"Get back to the court, now! The game is starting." Ronke ordered, her tone leaving no room for argument

"Alright, Captain," Miracle said, scurrying away to rejoin the game

As Ronke was about to leave, Tosin called her back

"Ronke, is it…..?" Tosin's question was interrupted by Ronke's answer

"Yes, it is true. However, Tosin, I want you to forget about it." Ronke said, her expression turning serious. "I've always wanted to go up against you and the Queens in an official game. I want you to play your best game today. Play like you want to kill me!"

"Ofcourse, I will," Tosin agreed

\|\*

Back to the present

"Tosin! Tosin!" Eno's voice pierced through the haze of Tosin's reverie, jolting her back to the present.

"Yes, yes, what is it?" Tosin said, snapping out of her daze

"You were spacing out. We're in the middle of a game here!" Eno explained

"Oh, sorry, my bad, I was spacing out, wasn't I? Haha" Tosin acknowledged with a sheepish grin

Eno huffed in exasperation, "I just said that! Tosin, your preoccupation has not gone unnoticed. We must press on!"

Resuming the game, the Queens has control of the ball. Oluchi, demonstrating quick thinking, passed the ball to Tosin, who instantly returned it to Oluchi. Anticipating Ronke's defense, Eno skillfully positioned herself, obstructing Ronke's path and creating a strategic 2-on-1 situation, pitting Eno and Oluchi against Efe

Seizing the opportunity,Oluchi executed a perfectly timed pass, setting up an alley-opp for Eno. With a powerful leap, Eno soared above the court, prepared to slam the ball into the hoop. However, Ronke's tenacity shone through as she rushed back, leaping with impressive agility and successfully blocking Eno's shot. The Queens, left in stunned silence by Ronke's astounding jumping prowess, could only watch as the ball careened off the rim, landing securely into Efe's grasp

Wasting no time, Ronke signaled to Efe for a pass. Efe obliged, propelling the ball towards Ronke as she sprinted towards the opposite hoop, unopposed. With an expertly executed layup, Ronke unleashed a thunderous roar from the crowd, their collective excitement reaching a fever pitch

As the final minutes of the game ticked away, the Iron Walls successfully narrowed the gap to 80-88, with the Queens maintaining a tenuous lead. With Victory within reach, both teams steeled themselves for the climatic finale, their unwavering determination palpable in the air

As the game progressed, the Queens found themselves back in control of the ball. Eno, acting swiftly, directed a pass towards Oluchi. However, in an uncharacteristic fumble, Oluchi's grip faltered, and the ball slipped from her grasp.

From her vantage point on the sidelines, Mrs. Lawal observed the unfolding events with growing trepidation. "Compose yourselves!" she bellowed, her instincts warning her of a potential momentum shift in favour of their opponents

Seizing the opportunity, Ronke pounced on the loose ball, orchestrating yet another successful steal and initiating a fast-paced counter-attack.

"Not on my watch, girl!" Tosin declared, her voice a blend of determination and urgency.

The Queens rallied behind their leader, rushing back to mount a solid defense against the Iron Walls' charge

Tosin's quick reaction paid dividends, as she deftly halted Ronke's progress, stifling the imminent fast-break. But just as the Queens began to regain their footing, Ronke's ingenuity rose to the forefront once more.

In a breathtaking display of skill and finesse, she unleashed a rapid, fluid maneuver that drew comparisons to Cynthia James. The Queens, left reeling from the sheer velocity and precision of Ronke's move, could only stare in stunned silence

The speed of Ronke's actions made Tosin appear like a neophyte, reducing her to a seated position on the floor as Ronke effortlessly danced past her. The shock in Tosin's eyes was unmistakeable, her inability to find the words to express her astonishment at Ronke's remarkable abilities serving as testament to her awe. Eno, Mercy, and Oluchi made valiant attempts to impede Ronke's advance, but their effort were in vain. With a stunning triple-clutch layup, Ronke evaded their defenses, eliciting thunderous applause and cheers from the captivating audience

The Queens, their voices laced with a blend of exasperation and admiration, grappled with the reality of their situation.

"Ronke is on fire! How does anyone hope to contain such a force of nature?" Oluchi pondered aloud

Mercy chimed in, emphasizing the depth of their predicament. "Tosin's best efforts proved futile against her,"

Tolu's admission further underscored the enormity of the challenge. "The Four of you combined could do anything. It seems that even with the Five of us, we still wouldn't be able to stop Ronke. Victory is far from certain"

As she regained her footing, Tosin, her voice tinged with a hint of melancholy, uttered a simple yet poignant reflection. "Life is cruel."

Eno, taken aback by Tosin's proclamation, pressed her for clarification. "What compels you to say that?"

Tosin brushed off the inquiry, dismissing it as mere self-talk. "Nothing of consequence, Eno. I was simply lost in thought"

In truth, Tosin's words bore the weight of her emparty for Ronke. The brilliance of the prodigious talent juxtaposed with the cruel reality of her heart condition was not lost on Tosin. Perhaps, in that moment, Tosin was indeed correct. Perhaps life's capacity for cruelty could not be denied

As the game clock resumed its countdown, the Queens found themselves in possession of the ball, with Oluchi at the forefront. A mere 45 seconds stood between them and victory, and Oluchi wasted no time in her attempt to run down the clock. Her tactics, however, did not sit well with Ronke, who grew increasingly agitated at the thought of conceding more points

Determined not to foul Oluchi and risk giving away free throws, Ronke focused her efforts on stealing the ball. With every passing moment, the Iron Walls' prospects for victory seemed to slip further away, adding a palpable sense of urgency to Ronke's actions. Summoning her resolve, Ronke deftly tapped the ball out of Oluchi's grasp, seizing control and charging towards the opposite hoop with unwavering determination

Tosin, anticipating Ronke's attack, moved swiftly to impede her progress. In response, Oluchi closed in, joining forces with Tosin to form a suffocating double-team against Ronke. The two players applied intense pressure, restricting Ronke's movement and presenting a formidable barrier between her and the basket

Despite the mounting pressure, Ronke maintained her composure. Drawing her inner strength, she focused on her breathing before unleashing her drive mode. She skillfully navigated the double-team, bouncing the ball around and evading the grasping hands of Tosin and Oluchi as they attempted to steal it back

In a brilliant display of skill, strategy, and agility, Ronke utilized Oluchi as a screen against Tosin, effectively blocking their movements and breaking through the double-team. With her path now cleared, Ronke sprinted into the paint, only to find Eno and Mercy standing guard, ready to thwart her efforts

Undeterred, Ronke continued her advance, refusing to yield in the face of opposition. Just as it seemed that she might break through the Queens' defense, Tolu managed to tap the ball from her hands. The ball careened towards the sidelines, with all eyes on its trajectory

In a spectacular display of athleticism, Helen dove towards the ball, her outstretched arm managing to forcefully toss it back to Ronke. The entire arena held its breath as Ronke caught the ball, turned to face the basket, and executed an awe-inspiring fadeaway jump shot

The ball sailed through the air, seemingly suspended in time, above the hands of Eno and Mercy, before finally finding its mark in a resounding swish. The arena erupted into a cacophony of cheers as the Iron Walls defied all odds, cutting the Queens' lead significantly. With 17 seconds left in the game, the Queenss' lead had been teimmed to a precarious 84-88

"Just four points separate them! The Iron Walls can pull this off!" exclaimed Spectator 1, his enthusiasm palpable

Spectator 2 nodded in agreement, an air of admiration evident in his voice, "Ronke is in peak form today! Had she been on the court from the start, this game would have been a walk in the park for the Iron Walls!"

Faced with the mounting pressure of the game, Mrs. Lawal signaled for a timeout. Seated together at the Queens' bench, the team awaited their Coach's instruction, only to be met with an unexpected response

"Hahahahahahahahahahahahahatitititiiti!" Mrs. Lawal erupted into an uncontrollable laughter, her mirth echoing throughout the court

The Queens exchanged baffled glances, uncertain of how to react to their coach's outburst

"Coach, is everything alright?" Mercy ventured, a hint of concern in her voice

Gradually regaining her composure, Mrs. Lawal brushed off her unusual behaaviour with a wave of her hand. "Ah, don't mimd me. It's just this game that is both funny and exhilarating. My apologies"

Despite her lighthearted demeanor, Mrs. Lawal quickly refocused her attention on the strategic matter at hand

"We must find a way to neutralize Ronke's Impact on the game" Mrs. Lawal said

"Coach, what are we going to do about Ronke?" Mercy pressed, eager to address the challenge poised by the Iron Walls standout player

"Ronke is a force to be reckoned with. A talent in her own league," Mrs. Lawal acknowledged, a hint of respect creeping into her tone. "Yet, her exceptional abilities are likely tempered by a heart condition, as evidenced by her earlier collapse on the court"

"What?" The Queens reacted with a collective gasp, shocked by the revelation

"And she is still skilled despite her health issues?" Tolu marveled

With a nod, Mrs. Lawal imparted a valuable life lesson to her team. "Life is full of surprises. Sometimes, individuals with extraordinary potential are held back by unforeseen limitations. Ronke, unfortunately, is one of such person"

Tosin, her voice unwavering, chimed in, "Coach, we have to secure victory in this game,"

"Indeed, Tosin," Mrs. Lawal agreed, a glint of determination in her eyes. "While my heart goes out to Ronke, we certainly cannot afford to lose this game. There is only one course of action left to take,"

Oluchi leaned in, her interest piqued, "What might that be, Coach?"

"Drain the clock!" Mrs. Lawal declared, her tone leaving no room for doubts. "We must drain the clock! Oluchi, your earlier attempt to stall was valiant, but it lacked the cohesion of a team effort. Remember, the Queens win as a unit. Pass the ball amongst yourselves until the remaining 17 second expire"

Bouyed by the strategic insight, the Queens voiced their agreement with a resounding chorus of assent

Meanwhile, on the Iron Walls' bench, praise for Ronke's stellar performance flowed freely

"Wow! Ronke is on a roll!" Ebere enthused, her admiration of her teammate evident

Miracle nodded, echoing Ebere's sentiment, "You can say that again"

Despite the accolades, Ronke remained unwavering in her focus. "Hah! Thanks, but we haven't achieved our goal just yet. Nothing short of victory will satisfy me!"

Rallying her players, Coach Rose offered a final push. "You've all performed exceptionally thus far, but we are still trailing by 4 points with a mere 17 seconds left on the clock. Go get them!"

The Iron Walls responded with a united chorus, their resolve unshakeable.

As the thrilling match neared its conclusion, both the Queens and Iron Walls poured their hearts into the final 17 seconds of play. The Queens resumed their offensive drive, spearheaded by Oluchi, while the Iron Walls mounted a formidable double-team defense with Ronke and Helen pressuring Oluchi to force a turnover

Undeterred, the Queens remained committed to their strategy. Oluchi deftly passed the ball to Mercy, who found herself momentarily unguarded as Helen had joined Ronke in the double-team effort against Oluchi. Seizing the opportunity, Mercy took an uncontested three-pointer, but her shot was barely deflected by Efe's fingertips, ricocheting off the rim

With Peju positioned under the hoop, the Queens held a numerical advantage in the ensuing battle for the rebound. Tosin, Eno, and Peju leaped in unison, their determination to fight for victory shining through. Thanks to Tosin's extraordinary jumping ability, she emerged victorious in the clash, snatching the ball away from her competitors

As the three of them landed, Ronke raced back to challenge for the ball. As a result, the pressure on Oluchi reduced as she was now being guarded by only Helen. Displaying quick reflexes, Tosin capitalized on the opening and passed the ball back to Oluchi. Ronke reacted a split second too late, managing only a fleeting touch with her fingertips. The ball careened towards the opposite end of the court, pursued by a determind Oluchi and Helen

"We can't afford to lose here," Oluchi thought resolutely, "We have scores to settle with the Victorious Varsity, and until we face them, defeat is simply not an option"

Oluchi's unwavering determination shone through as she retrieved the ball near the hoop. With a mere four seconds left on the court

Ronke, consumed by the mounting pressure, msde a desperate leap to intercept the psss,, recording yet another steal with just two seconds remaining. The audience's collective gasps resounded throughout the arena as they bore witness to the nail-biting drama unfolding before them

Without hesitation, Ronke launched a full-court shot in a stunning display of resolve. As the ball soared towards the basket, the final buzzer blared, signaling the end of the game. The ballricochetted off the rim, and for a moment, all eyes were fixed on its trajectory as it seened poised to miss its mark. But in a heart-stopping twist, the ball swished through the net. Ronke's miraculous buzzer beater narrowed the scoreline to 87-88, but ultimately, the Queens emerged victorious

However, the momentary jubilation was short-lived. A piercing sound of scream reverberated throughout the arena as Ronke collapsed to the ground, clutching to her chest in agony. Both teams rallied together, united by their shared concern for Ronke's wellbeing. As Ronke was stretchered off to the hospital, a sense of disbelief permeated the once euphoric atmosphere

"We all make various assumptions in life," Ronke mused, reflecting on her circumstances. "But I've always held onto one simple notion: if I were Superman, what would my kryptonite be? Perhaps, it would be this fragile heart of mine,"

In just three minutes of play, Ronke managed to leave an increadible mark on the game, her impact surpassing those of other players.

Her stat line read: 17 points, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 8 steals, 1 turnover

As the event of the game continued to resonate with players and spectators alike, one thing was abundantly clear: Ronke's resilience in the face of adversity would remain an enduring symbol of the indomitable human spirit
