CHAPTER 53
"THE OVERWHELMING POWER OF THE BACKUP SQUAD"
The atmosphere was charged with an undeniable energy as spectator filled the arena, the cacophony of voices rising and falling in a symphony of anticipation. The air was filled with an intoxicating blend of excitement and nerves as fans donned their team colours, a vibrant sea of yellow and purple meeting a wave of pink and white
The pristine court gleamed beneath the glare of the lights, an immaculate stage for the upcoming battle of wills and skill. The scent of freshly polished hardwood mingled with the aroma of concession stand fare, adding to the sensory feast that was the evening's event
As the commentators took to their mics, their voices boomed throughout the arena, expertly weaving a narrative of the teams' strengths and vulnerabilities. Fans hung on their every word, eager to gain any insight that might hint at the outcome of the impending clash
Referees stood at the ready, their uniforms crisp and professional, their whistles and years of experience the only weapons needed to maintain order amidst the chaos about to unfold. Players huddled around their respective coaches, their adrenaline fueled bodies bristling with nervous energy as they listened intently to last-minute instructions and words of encouragement
The Queens' bench buzzed with anticipation as Mrs. Lawal announced her strategy for the match. Her commanding presence served as a source of inspiration and motivation for the team as they prepare to face their opponents on the court
"Chioma, Teni, Shalom, Kevwe, and Mayowa." Mrs. Lawal declared, her voice resonating through the air, "You guys will be our starting lineup today. Remember our tactical plan, as we discussed this morning. We need one more win to secure our place in the Christmas Champions Cup. Show no mercy!"
"YEAH!" A resounding chorus of agreement rose from the Queens in response to their Coach's words, their spirits bolstered by the collective determination to triumph
Meanwhile, at the Barachel High School team bench, Coach Maurice delivered his own instructions, his voice imbued with unwavering resolve
"Maureen, Fortune, Yinka, Yetunde, and Yewande," he announced, his gaze surveying the lineup with intensity, "You will be our starting five today. It seems the Queens have heavily rotated their squad. Let us capitalize on their arrogance and force their regular players onto the court!"
The Barachel team roared in unison, their commitment to the challenge unshakable
As both teams took to the court, the Queens huddled for a brief, final discussion before the match commenced. Chioma's voice carried through the group, sense of urgency colouring her tone
"Guys," Chioma began, "I need a favour"
"What is it?" Teni questioned, her curiosity piqued
"All I need from you guys is absolute trust. The rest fall into place," Chioma requested
`Shalom met Chioma's gaze with a bright smile, her eyes shining with confidence. "Alright, we trust you,"
"Thanks," Chioma appreciated with a smile
"Let's focus on the game at hand," Shalom reminded the group. "Victory here will guarantee our place in the Christmas Champions Cup. Let's do this!"
"YEAH!" The Queens' collective agreement reverberated through the air, prompting a surge of cheers from their fans in the stands
As the five Queens prepare to break their circle, Teni's voice carried through the din, prompting a final chant
"3, 2, 1, Charlie Queens! Fight!" Teni roared
"YEAH!" The Queens roared, echoing their teammate's call to arms, their voices ringing with the promise of victory
As the Queens' huddle broke, Kevwe turned to Teni with a questioning expression
"Teni, why did you take the initiative?" Kevwe asked, her tone curious rather than accusatory
Teni met Kevwe's gaze with unwavering confidence. "With our Captain on the bench, someone had to step up," she explained. "As the team's ace, I felt it was my responsibility to lead us in Tosin's absence"
"Hey," Shalom chimed in, her bright grin offering reassurance to both Kevwe and Teni. "It doesn't matter who takes the lead when Tosin isn't on the court," she said. "We're a team, and we all have the capability to step up when needed. Right now, let's focus on the game at hand and secure our spot in the Christmas Champions Cup!"
The arena trembled with anticipation as both teams assumed their positions on the court. The fans' enthusiasm reached a crescendo, their cheers and chants reverberating through the air. The three sections of the arena, occupied by the Charlie Queens Academy supporters, seemed to drown out the cheers of the lone section of Barachel High School fans
"Never again will our students face humiliation on the court," Principal Adebayo declared, his voice firm with conviction. "From this moment on, we will fight alongside them, offering our support!"
The Charlie Queens Academy team bench was overcame with a mix of shock and gratitude as memories of their previous match's humiliation flooded their minds
"They came for us this time," Tosin smiled, her eyes bright with appreciation
"Indeed," Mrs. Lawal said, her gaze fixed on the sea of pink and white. "After witnessing the booing you girls faced in the last match against the Boluwatife Oluwole High School, Principal Adebayo vowed to never let it happen again. Their actions means the world to us"
"Yeah," Tosin nodded, her smile mirroring that of her Coach.
"It seems Shalom is trying to tell you something, Tosin," Tolu noted, observing their teammate on the court.
Tosin followed Tolu's gaze, attempting to decipher Shalom's gestures, "No. She's not just communicating with me. She's trying to tell all of us something," Tosin clarified
"What is it?" Mercy asked, her curiosity piqued
"I believe she's directing our attention to the fans that just arrived," Tosin suggested
The Queens' bench turned their attention to the crowd, scanning the sea of faces for the message Shalom sought to convey. Amidst the throng of supporters, two girls waved excitedly in their direction
"Aren't those….." Mercy began, recognition dawning on her face
"Yeah," Tosin confirmed, her tone tinged with sadness. "Those two are Abike and Sandra. Like us, they quit basketball after our defeat against Rose Mary High School four years ago. The difference is, they never came back"
"I tried to convince them to return, but their were made up," Tosin admitted, a hint of regret colouring her words
"Perhaps they've found their true calling elsewhere," Mrs. Lawal suggested, offering a reassuring smile. "It's possible that basketball wasn't the right path for them afterall"
Within the crowd, Abike and Sandra conversed, their voices laced wistfulness
"I wish we were down there with them right now," Sandra confessed, her eyes fixed on the court. "I don't know about you, but I wish we had listened to Tosin back then"
"I feel the same way," Abike replied, her voice heavy with the weight of their shared decision
As the referee's whistle pierced the air, the ball soared high above the court. In a display of raw athleticism, Mayowa outjumped Yewande, tapping the ball towards her teammates. The ball landed perfectly in Chioma's hands, eliciting gasp of surprise from the crowd
"Now then, let's begin!" Chioma declared, her eyes locked on Maureen as she advanced
Maureen braced herself, keenly aware of Chioma's formidable reputable as a point guard.
"I must remain vigilant," Maureen mused, preparing for Chioma's attack. "Even if the Queens rotated their squad, Chioma is not far from Oluchi in the national point guard rankings. She is a force to be reckoned with,"
Just as Chioma approached Maureen, she unleashed a precise pass straight into the paint, catching both friends and foes offguard. The ball landed effortlessly in Mayowa's hands, prompting a cacophony of cheers from the Queens' fans
With a swift and powerful one-handed slam dunk, Mayowa sent the crowd into a frenzy, the energy in the arena reaching new heights
"That pass was incredible! Absolute beauty!" exclaimed a Charlie Queens Academy student amidst the sea of supporters
"Whoever made that pass is a force to be reckoned with. What a pass!" another fan chimed in, awestruck by Chioma's display of skill
On the Queens bench, Oluchi couldn't help but be impressed. "As a fellow point guard, I can't deny her talent. If I played a different position, I'd want Chioma to be our starting pont guard. She's a natural"
"Her situational awareness is uncanny," Mercy added, her eyes fixed on the court
"I've mentioned this before, Oluchi, but you must stay on your toes," Mrs. Lawal advised with a smile, "Chioma could surpass you soon,"
The game continued with Barachel High School in possession of the ball. Under Maureen's leadership, the team launched a multi-pronged attack, approaching from various angles. However, Chioma halted Maureen's advance
In a display of cunning strategy, Maureen executed a no-look pass to Yewande, who eagerly awaited the ball within the paint. Unfazed by the deceptive maneuver, Mayowa remained steadfast in her defense, refusing to be shaken. Yewande attempted to overpower Mayowa, but her efforts proved futile, as Mayowa denied her any space to gain advantage.
With the shot clock dwindling to a mere five seconds, Yewande was forced to attempt a shot. Mayowa, displaying her impressive defensive skills, effortlessly blocked the shot and secured the rebound.
Chioma received a quick pass from Mayowa, her calm and collected demeanor unwavering as she advanced towards the opposing team's basket
Maureen managed to impede Chioma's advance, her determination evident in her declaration. "I won't let you dictate the terms of this game!"
Undeterred by Maureen's challenge, Chioma retorted, "Allow me to demonstrate a proper no-look pass"
Chioma masterfully executed her own no-look pass, leaving both teammates and opponents in a state of bewilderment. The ball seamlessly found its way into Kevwe's unsuspecting hands
Momentarily taken aback, Kevwe quickly regained her composure and, just as Yetunde attempted to recover, launched a three-pointer. The ball soared through the air, ultimately swishing through the hoop, eliciting a thunderous applause from the Charlie Queens Academy supporters
"Who is this Chioma?" Sandra marveled, thoroughly impressed by the accuracy of Chioma's passes. "Even her own teammates are left stunned!"
"I couldn't agree more," Abike concurred, her voice tinged with admiration. "As someone who used to play the same position, I can't help but envy her talent"
Back on the Queens bench, the team couldn't help but marvel at Chioma's impressive passes
"Chioma's passes have improved significantly since last year," Tosin observed, admiration evident in her voice. "I can't wait to play alongside her and experience those remarkable passes firsthand"
"You're right," Mrs. Lawal agreed, nodding her head in acknowledgement. "In fact, I'd argue that her passes have now surpassed Oluchi's" Oluchi couldn't help but feel a tinge of irritation at her Coach's words. "But what's equally remarkable is Mayowa's defense," Mrs. Lawal continued. "She's picked up some remarkable skills from watching Eno's performance against the Iron Walls. To think she's managed to absorb and implement them so quickly is amazing. She is good"
"Still, there is something special about Chioma's passes that truly hits home," Mercy chimed in, praising her teammate's abilities
"We're truly fortunate to have such a talent on our team," Tosin said, smiling proudly
"I'm not surprised, considering she must have learned a great deal during her time in the USA," Eno added, acknowledging Chioma's experience
"Can we just focus on the game, please?" Oluchi interjected, her irritation spilling over her words
"Why are you so irritated, Oluchi? Are you jealous of Chioma?" Tosin teased, a playful grin on her face
"Why would I be jealous of my junior?" Oluchi retorted, trying to brush off the suggestion.
The Queens erupted into laughter at the exchange, their camaderie shining through even in the heat of competition
Back on the court, the ball was in Barachel High School's possession, with Maureen bouncing it rhythmically, under Chioma's watchful defense
"Alright, I'll have to take matters into my own hands," Maureen mused, her thoughts tinged with resolve
With a burst of speed, Maureen dashed past Chioma, who managed to react in time. However, Maureen halted abruptly, outsmarting her opponent, and launched a jump shot from the edge of the arc. The ball soared through the air and swished through the hoop
"Yes!" Maureen clenched in triumph as the Barachel high school fans roared
The game resumed with the Queens in possession of the ball. Chioma, calm and composed, led the charge but was met with resistance from Maureen
"Chioma, our battle begins now!" Maureen challenged, her voice ringing with determination
"Oh?" Chioma replied, a small smile playing at her lips. "But tell me, Maureen, what is trust?"
"huh?" Maureen snapped, momentarilly distracted by Chioma's question
Seizing the opportunity, Chioma deftly tossed the ball to Shalom, much to Maureen's irritation
"You distracted me just to make that pass," Maureen accused, frustration evident in her tone. Chioma remained silent, turning her attention to Chioma on the court
Guarded by Yinka, Shalom entered a state of deep focus, the ball held firmly between her legs.
As the shot clock ticked down to ten seconds, Shalom made her move. Inhaling deeply, she began bouncing the ball with incredible speed, her street-basketball style catching Yinka off guard
With expert footwork and unrelenting determination, Shalom brought Yinka to the floor and dashed towards the hoop. The Queens on the bench reacted to Shalom's move, their expression a mix of shock and awe. Yewande, Yetunde, and Fortune rushed to stop Shalom, but even their combined efforts couldn't contain Shalom's raw talent. exploiting a gapping hole in their defense, Shalom launched a graceful lay up with a beaming smile
The ball swished through the net, eliciting a thunderous cheers from the Queens' fans in the stands
"As a point guard," Chioma continued, her voice carrying over the cheers as Maureen listened intently, "trust is a given. While it's essential for your teammates to trust you, in moments like that…" Chioma gestured towards Shalom, who had just single-handedly taken on four opponents, "those are the moments when a point guard must have faith in her teammates"
The game progressed with Barachel High School regaining control of the ball. As the first half neared its end, the Queens mounted a relentless full-court defense, their well-coordinated strategy forcing Maureen to approach with caution. In a swift and skillful move, Chiomaa stole the ball from Maureen with ease
"Not so fast!" Maureen said, quickly recovering and assuming her defensive stance. However, Chioma had other plans. Executing a back pass between her legs, she sent the ball soaring into the waiting hands of Teni
"Don't miss, Teni," Chioma smiled, her faith in her teammate unwavering
"is that any way to address your senior? It should be Senior Teni!" Teni retorted, her focus locked on the basket. With a smoot and precise motion, she unleashed a three-pointer. The ball sailed through the air, landing cleanly in the net just as the buzzer signaled the end of the first half
Amidst the buzz of excitement, Maureen called out to Chioma, "Hey, Chioma," she asid, her curiosity piqued
"Yes, what is it?" Chioma replied, turning her attention to her opponent
"Did you say her name is Teni?" Maureen inquired, trying to place the name
"Yes, that's her name," Chioma confirmed
Intrigued, Maureen then approached Teni. "Hi, there," she called out, hoping to catch Teni's attention
"What is it?" Teni answered, her tone guarded.
"Are you Teni Adenuga, the gunner?" Maureen questioned, her suspicion growing
"Don't call me that!" Teni snapped, walked away from the conversation
"Just as I thought," Maureen mused, her suspicion confirmed. "Teni Adenuga, the Gunner. The shooting guard with incredible accuracy from anywhere around half-court. They say she never misses a shot within that range. She could have beem the number one shooting guard in the country if not for a certain someone"
As the teams retreated to their respective locker rooms for halftime, the Queens held a commanding lead of 67-23. Within the Barachel High School Team locker room, Coach Maurice's frustration was palpable
"Damn it!" Coach Maurice exclaimed, slamming the benches in frustration
"Coach, if I may," Maureen interjected, her hand raised
"Yes, Maureen? What is it?" Coach Maurice asked, his attention now focused on his player
"I apologise, Coach, but we severely underestimated the Queens' strength," Maureen began, her voice filled with urgency, "Take Chioma, for example. While she may be their second-choice point guard, she's not far behind their first-choice point guard, Oluchi, in the national rankings. She opereates at a national level even though she hasn't played at the national levels yet. Her passing skills are incredible. Furthermore, I've just discovered that their shooting guard, Teni, is none other than Teni Adenuga, the Gunner – the second-ranked shooting guard in the country"
Coach Maurice's eyes widened in shock as Maureen continued. "This means that the Queens are at least close to the level of the top five schools this year. I would even say they are the sixth strongest school in the entire country. They might just have what it takes to win the Christmas Champions Cup this year"
"Damn it!" Coach Maurice exclaimed, his mind racing with the newfound information. "To think we would face such a formidable opponent now when we are so close to booking our spot at this year's Christmas Champios Cup. I can't believe that girl is Teni. She looks so different now. I didn't even recognize her"
"That's likely because she dyed her hair black," Maureen revealed, "It used to be completely white"
"Well, that certainly changes things," Coach Maurice declared, his resolve hardening. "In the second half, we'll double-team Teni. Make sure she doesn't touch the ball at all!"
"YEAH!" The Barachel High School Team chorused, their determination to turn the tide of the game steeling their resolve
Meanwhile, in the Queens' locker room, Mrs. Lawal attempted to address her team, only to be politely interrupted by Teni. With a nod from their Coach, Teni stood up and began to speak, drawing the attention of her teammates
"Before the game started, Chioma asked us to trust her," Teni said, her voice filled with determination. "I don't know if it's because we trusted her or because of our strength – or maybe both – but we can see the result in the score."
Hesitating for a moment, Teni decided to share a part of her identity with her teammates, even if she wasn't quite ready to delve into her history. "I want to tell you guys who I really am. My full name is Teni Adenuga"
The revelation shocked some of her teammates, particularly Mercy and Eno, while others like Tosin, Chioma, and Tolu were hearing the name for the first time
"People call me Teni Adenuga, the Gunner," Teni continued, a hint of discomfort in her voice. "But I've never been fond of that nickname. I'm sure some of you know about me. Chioma, I'll be counting on you to deliver those amazing passes. I can shoot from anywhere around half-court. In the second half, let's go wild!"
"YEAH!" The Queens cheered in unison, the excitement in the locker room palpable
"Can I be a full-fledge member of this team from now on?" Teni asked, hope filling her voice
"Teni, you're a Queen!" Mrs. Lawal replied with a warm smile
Teni melted, her eyes filled with tears of joy as she showed appreciation, "Thank you, everyone,"
Both teams returned to the court, the Queens gathering around Tosin for one final huddle before the second half commenced
"3! 2! 1! Charlie Queens! Fight!" Tosin yelled, her voice ringing with passion
"YEEEEAAAAAH!" The Queens responded in unison, their spirits bolstered by Tosin's rallying cry
As both teams took their positions on the court, the second half began with the Queens in possession of the ball. Chioma led the charge but was met with a surprising challenge
"Don't think you'll score easily in the second half, Teni Adenuga, the Gunner!" Fortune declared, her determination unwavering
"We'll stop your shots!" Yinka added, her resolve as strong as her teammate's
"Huh?" Teni snapped, surprise evident in her expression
"What? They're double-teaming Teni?" Chioma mused, shock evident in her voice
