CHAPTER 56
"RIVALRY: THE THRONE FIGHT!"
The city of Lagos lay shrouded in the stillness of night, the city's vibrant energy momentarily subdued by the darkness. The skyscrapers stood like giants, their light twinkling like stars in the night sky. The distant hum of generators and the occasional honk of a csr horn were the only sounds that broke the silence. The air was thick with the smell of night blooming flowers and the sweet scent of street food wafting from the vendors who still lingered in the streets. Despite the late hours, Lagos never truly slept, and the city's nightlife pulsed with a rhythm that was uniquely its own. In this quiet moment, the city seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the dawn that would bring another day of hustle and bustle to its streets
As the night wore on, Tosin found herself tossing and turning in her bed, her mind racing with thought of the mysterious Eshe. The encounter with her and Victoria has left Tosin with more questions than answers
"Eshe… who is she?" Tosin wondered, her eyes fixated on the ceiling. "She said she is a model, but Victoria confirmed she's a student. And her basketball skills..... They are impressive. Her passes are accurate, and they seem to lead to points. If she is a student, does that mean she is a player as well? If so, will we face her school at the Christmas Champions Cup? Damn it, I can't sleep"
The first ray of sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow on Tosin's room. Sade, Tosin's mother gently nudged her awake, reminding her of another school day. With a tired sigh, Tosin pulled herself together, determined to navigate the day despite her restless night
The school day seemed to drag on endlessly, but finally, the clock struck 4 pm, and the students dispersed to their homes. The Queens, however, remained behind, gathered at the gym to prepare for their upcoming game against Rose Newwton High School
"1, 2, 3, 4, 5, go! Switch!" Mrs. Lawal commanded, her voice echoing across the court. The Queens were practicing a new technique, their movement synchronized as they follow their Coach's instructions
"Faster! Faster! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, go!" Mrs. Lawal called out, pushing the girls to their limits. The grueling training session was so intense that the sweat on the girls' bodies could easily be mistaken for water
For hours, the Queens pushed themselves, their dedication and determination evident in every movement. Finally, at 8 pm, the whistle blew, signaling the end of the training session. The girls collapsed on the court, their bodies exhausted, but their spirits unbroken
"Gather around, Queens!" Mrs. Lawal called out, her voice resonating through the vast expanse of the gym
The girls, their expressions a blend of anticipation and determination, formed a huddle around their beloved Coach
"First of all, congratulations on securing a place in this year's Christmas Champions Cup. Your hardwork and dedication have once again paid off, as we find ourselves on the cusps of the Christmas Champions Cup." Mrs. Lawal began, her eyes shining with pride. "You've all performed exceptionally well thus far"
The Queens' faces lit up with excitement, their cheers of triumph and jubilation filling the gym
"Settle down now," Mrs. Lawal requested, a hint of amusement in her voice. "As you know, tomorrow brings the final match of the Lagos Prefectural Championship – the preliminary playoffs round. We face Rose Newton High School, and although both teams have already secured their place in the upcoming tournament, the stakes are higher than ever"
The expressions of the Queens shifted, a newfound gravity settling upon their faces as they listened intently
"A win tomorrow means more than just a win in the preliminaries. It establishes our place as the undisputed best team in all of Lagos this year. Furthermore, the winner will be seaded in Pot 1 for Friday's draw, granting them a considerable advantage in the Christmas Champions Cup. You see why tomorrow's match is so crucial?"
The Queens responded with a chorus of affirmative shouts, their eyes ablaze with fierce determination
"Very well," Mrs. Lawal continued, a smile playing on her lips. "it appears that you are all quite eager to claim victory. As for today, let us conclude here. The hour is late, and you've all trained with exceptional dedication. Tidy up the gym and make your way home. No additional training tonight. Eat well, rest thoroughly, and prepare yourselves for tomorrow. Our match begins at 7 pm, so we shall gather here at 4 pm immediately after school hours for a strategic meeting. Be punctual, Queens!"
"Yes, ma'am" The Queens chorused, their voices ringing with conviction
"Alright, dismiss!" Mrs. Lawal said, bringing the training session to a close for the day
"Thank you very much ma'am," The Queens bowed in appreciation
With the final bow of appreciation towards Mrs. Lawal, the Queens set to work, tidying up the gym. The intensity of their training and the lateness of the hour left no room for additional practice, and the girls made their way to their respective homes. Each of them enjoyed a hearty meal and retired early, their minds and bodies readying themselves for the challenges that lay ahead
The sun rose over Lagos, casting a warm glow on the burstling streets as students made their way to Charlie Queens Academy. Despite the air of normalcy that hung over the school, a sense of anticipation permeated the halls, for today was no ordinary day – it was match day
As the members of the Charlie Queens Academy Female Basketball Team settled into their classes, their minds were flooded with thoughts of the upcoming final against Rose Newton High School. Lectures and lessons became secondary, serving only as a brief distraction from the excitement that bubbled beneath the surface
During breaks and study periods, the Queens could be found huddled in small groups, discussing strategy, voicing concerns, and sharing words of encouragement. The camaraderie among the teammates was palpable, their unwavering determination and support for one another serving as a testament to their bond
As the clock struck 4 pm, the school's alarm reverberated through the halls, signaling the end of the academic day. While their peers headed home, the Queens made a beeline for the gym, eager to attend the scheduled strategic meeting with Mrs. Lawal
The meeting was long but engaging, with each team member given the opportunity to offer suggestions, voice concerns, and ask questions. Mrs. Lawal led the discussion with her characteristic confidence and insight, fostering an environment of collaboration and strategic thinking
As the meeting came to a close at 5:30 pm, the Queens dispersed, a sense of urgency and focus etched upon their faces. With a final exchange of determined nods, the Queens raced off to the arena, their hearts pounding in anticipation of the night's pivotal match
The sky grew tumultuous above, an ominous atmosphere settled over the city of Lagos. The once serene day had given away to a turbulent tempest, as if to mirror the intensity of the looming confrontation. The wind hawled and the Heavens unleashed a torrential downpour, drenching the world in a deluge of rain
Undeterred by the harsh condition, the Queens pressed on, their focus unwavering as they made their way towards the arena.
With the waemth and familiarity of the locker room, beckoning, the girls hastily changed into their warmup kits, seeking refuge from the tempest that raged outside
No sooner had the Queens entered the arena than the doors and windows were shut tight, an attempt to hold back the elements that threatened to disrupt the day's events. Unbeknownst to the Queens, however, an unexpected surprise awaited them – one that would change the course of their evening and fuel their determination like never before
As both teams took to the court, to warm up, the Queens were suddenly greeted by a cacophony of noise from the stands. There, a sea of pink and white filled their vision, as students and staff from Charlie Queens Academy waved flags, beat drums, and blew trumpets in a rousing display of support to their beloved team. The memories of the game against Barachel came flooding back, as the familiar faces from their school now occupied more than three-quarters of the arena
:"It appears they've come out in full force once again," Shalom remarked, her eyes surveying the enthusiastic crowd
"They never cease to amaze us," Tosin responded, a look admiration and gratitude etched on her face. "Let's make sure we don't disappoint them tonight"
"YEAH!" The Queens chorused their agreement, their voices filled with a renewed sense of purpose.
As the Queens began their warmup drills, the energy on the court was electric, with layups, slam dunks, and jump shots punctuating the air with precision and force
Unbeknownst to the Queens, they had garnered the attention of an unexpected spectator. From her vantage point in the stands, Eshe watched with keen interest as the girls practiced their maneuvers on the court. Her eyes, however, lingered on Tosin, an enigmatic smile playing
As Victoria approached Tosin for a brief exchange, the tension between the two were evident
"Are you prepared for another lesson?" Victoria questioned, her voice laced with a hint of condescension
Tosin, undaunted, met Victoria's gaze with unwavering determination, "We won't be losing today, Victoria. We've learned from our past encounters, and we're ready to show you just how much we've grown"
Victoria lets out a sinister laugh, her disbelief evident in her response. "We shall see about that, won't we? By the way, don't you want to hear about that loser? Your honey bunny? Hm?" she taunted
"Look, Victoria, if this is about our argument from two daays ago, let's drop it for now!" Tosin said
"Why? Surely you must realize that they are nothing more than manipulative monsters, using us for their own gain and discarding us without a second thought!" Victoeia said
Tosin, her resolve unshaken, offered a measured response. "While I understand your perspective, it is unfair to generalize an entire gender. However, that is not our focus today. Today, we will show you the strength of the Queens. When we emerge victorious, you'd best warn your buddies in the Victorious Varsity. We are coming for them all!"
Victoria merely smiled, a cryptic expression on her face as the two girls parted ways and rejoined their teams
In the stands, Eshe watched the exchange with rapt attention, her interest in the unfolding drama growing by the second. As she observed the Queens on the court, her voice barely audible above the din of the crowd
"This game promises to be quite the spectacle. Victoria's defense may be the best in the country, but the Queens' offensive capabilities.cannot be underestimated. Who will reign – the unstoppable vs the immovable object"
As the Queens continued their warmup routine, the entire team grew incresingly uneasy with Mercy's sudden apprehension
"Mercy, is everything alright?" Tosin questioned, concern evident in her voice
"It's that girl over there," Mercy replied, gesturing towaeds the stands, "the one in the white jacket,"
Curiosity piqued, the entire team turned to follow Mercy's gaze, their attention now focused on the mysterious spectator
"You mean Eshe?" Tosin asked, recognizing Eshe whom she met two days ago
"What? Do you know her?" Mercy asked, her eyes widened in shock
"Not really. I met her two days ago but she's still a mystery to me. I don't really know her," Tosin revealed, "What about her?"
"Her name is Eshe Effiong," Mercy revealed, her voice barely above a whisper, "She is the number point guard in the country and a member of the Victorious Varsity,"
A collective gasp echoed through the team as the news hit home. The Queens' determination only seemed to grow stronger as they process Eshe's unexpected presence at the game. Eno, her gaze still fixed on the enigmatic point guard, voice her confusion. "But I thought the number 1 point guard was based in Uyo? What could she possibly be doing here in Lagos?"
Mercy, ever the strategist, comsidered the implication of Eshe's appearance. "Regardless of her reasons for attending, one thing is certain – she's sure to gather intel on our performance today,"
As the rest of the Queens discussed the potential ramifications of Eshe's attendance, Tosin found herself lost in thought. "Eshe Effiong, a member of the Victorious Varsity… it all makes sense now"
Rallying her teammates, Tosin suddenly said with unwavering conviction, "Guys, even if Eshe is here as a scout, it doesn't change what we have to do. We came here to win, and that's exactly what we are going to do!"
The Queens chorused their agreement, a fierce determination burning in their eyes
"Starting with Victoria, and her team, we will dethrone the Victorious Varsity and their teams one at a time and claim our rightful place as the best in Nigeria!" Tosin declared, her voice brimming with passion
Hearing the Queens' resolute chants, Eshe couldn't help but chuckle to herself. "It seems the Queens are ready to go," she mused, a hint of amusement lacing her thoughts
As the waemup session drew to a close, both teams retreated to their respective locker rooms to don their official kits. The Queens emerged, their appearance subtly different than usual – instead of their customary all-pink or all-white kits, they wore white striped pink tops with pink striped white shorts. The energy in the locker room was electric, the air crackling with anticipation as they awaited their coach's final instructions
"Oluchi, Teni, Shalom, Tosin, and Eno, The five of you be our starting lineup today," Mrs. Lawal declared, her voice steady and resolute, "Go out there and break down that wall they call Victoria!"
The Queens chorused their assent, their determination palpable as they prepared to face their formidable opponents
Meanwhile in the Rose Newton High School Basketball Team's locker room, the team exuded confidence as they donned their away kits – a bold combination of blue striped black. As the favourites, they approached the game with an air of invincibility, their fearlessness an extension of their Coach's unwavering faith in their abilities
"Fisayo, Uzeoma, Feranmi, Isioma, and Victoria, you'll start today's game against the Queens" Coach Bankole instructed, his voice laced with the certainty of victory, "Just like last year, let's show them what true despair feels like"
With a resoumding "Right!" the Rose Newton High School Female Basketball Team affirmed their dedication to their Coach's vision
The energy of the arena reached a fever pitch as both teams took to the court, the anticipation of the impending showdown palpable in the air.
The Queens huddled together, their resolve unshakeable as Tosin's voice echoed through the group. "A lion, an elephant, a cat, a rat, even an ant – it doesn't matter who the enemy is. There is only one thing a Queen needs to do to defend her territory. To crush the enemies! Let's win this!"
"YEAH!" The Queens chorused
"In 3, 2, 1, Charlie Queens! Fight!" Tosin yelled
"YEAH!" The Queens yelled in unison, determination etched on their voices
As they took their positions on the court, Tosin's voice rang out once more. "Let's give our customers a nice, comfortable ride to the destruction city,"
"YEAH!" The Queens chorused in unison
As both teams took their positions, Fisayo and Tosin exchanged a brief handshake, their mutual respect evident in the gesture. "Let's have a good match," Tosin said, her tone earnest. Fisayo nodded in agreement, and the two Captains returned to their teams
In the center of the court, Eno and Victoria stood face-to-face, their eyes locked in a silent battle of wills. "The Queens will win today, Victoria," Eno declared, her voice unwavering
Victoria sneered, her confidence unshaken. "You said the same thing last year, and you still lost. What makes you think today will be any different?"
Eno, her resolve unbroken, repeated her declaration. "We will win today,"
The whistle blew, and the ball was tossed into the air, its ascent marking the start of the much-anticiipated match. As the ball reached its peak, Victoria tapped the ball to Fisayo, who swiftly passed it to Feranmi as she sprinted towards the hoop for an early fast break. Just as Feranmi leaped to score the first points, Shalon expertly blocked the shot, with Mercy grabbing the rebound and passing it to Tosin
Victoria, having halted Tosin's advance, stood like an immovable wall between Tosin and the basket, her defensive prowess on full display. "The game has only just begun. Shouldn't you be taking it easy, Tosin?" she taunted, a sinister grin spread across her face
Tosin, her determination undiminished, responded with a confident smirk, "Heh, right back at you, Victoria!"
