Chapter 458 - Chapter 448: The Duel of Counterparts! Magmortar’s Gambeson

Chapter 448: The Duel of Counterparts! Magmortar's Gambeson

"Dragonite is unable to battle! Arbok wins!" the referee announced.

Kenji and Zhurong Yun recalled their Pokémon simultaneously. While Arbok

technically held the field, its stamina was depleted, and Kenji knew better than

to push the serpent further against a fresh opponent.

The battle was heating up—literally. Although Dragonite's final Draco Meteor had

been aimed at Arbok, its secondary purpose had been to clear the sky. The heavy

rain clouds had been shredded, and the downpour was beginning to taper off. The

ground was still damp, but the oppressive humidity of a Fire-type domain was

returning.

"Come forth!! Magmortar!"

Zhurong Yun re-released the fire-beast. The moment its feet hit the ground, the

remaining puddles around it vanished into steam. The air shimmered with an

intense heat haze.

"I'm counting on you! Electivire!"

Kenji had designated Magmortar as Electivire's primary target from the start.

However, Zhurong Yun wasn't going to let the same trick work twice.

"Electivire! Rain Dance!"

"HA-QIA!"

Kenji needed the rain to stay in the game. Without it, Magmortar's fire would be

unchecked.

"Magmortar! Flamethrower!"

"YA-HA!"

Magmortar leveled its arm-cannons. Instead of a slow, heavy Fire Blast, it opted

for the rapid-fire precision of Flamethrower. Two pillars of searing orange

flame erupted, converging on Electivire.

Electivire was caught in mid-execution. It could either dodge and lose the

weather setup or tank the hit to finish the move. It chose the latter.

BOOM!

The golden brute was swallowed by the inferno. Steel would have melted into slag

under that heat.

"BO-QIAAAAA!"

Even with its Thunder Armor active, Electivire let out a shriek of pain. But as

the fire roared, the sky above answered. Thick, black clouds spiraled into a

vortex, and the rain returned with a vengeance.

A golden silhouette leaped from the flames. Electivire was steaming, its fur

singed and scorched, but it was still standing. A faint violet light flickered

around its body—the Edge of Night had proc'd, absorbing the lethal threshold of

the burn.

Zhurong Yun narrowed his eyes. He had gained a significant lead in health, but

the rain was back.

"Magmortar! Belly Drum!"

"YA-KA!"

Magmortar took a massive breath, its stomach bloating outward like a giant

balloon before it rhythmically pounded its belly with its fists. A booming,

tribal drumbeat echoed through the arena.

In exchange for half its total health, Magmortar had maximized its Physical

Attack. It was a terrifying gamble.

Kenji realized the shift immediately. Magmortar was usually a Special Attacker,

but Belly Drum turned it into a physical juggernaut. In the rain, its Fire-type

special moves were dampened, so it was switching to a "Mixed Attacker" build to

bypass the weather penalty.

"Magmortar! Flame Charge!"

Despite its bulk, the beast moved like a burning tank. It ignited its body, its

internal heat so high that the raindrops vaporized before they could touch its

skin. It charged at Electivire, its speed increasing with every heavy step.

"Low Kick!"

"BO-QIA!"

Electivire didn't meet the charge head-on. It pivoted, its foot snapping out to

catch Magmortar's ankle.

THUD!

The kick landed perfectly. Magmortar's momentum was redirected, and the heavy

beast nearly face-planted into the mud. It managed a desperate roll, righting

itself, but the secondary effect of Low Kick had proc'd—its speed had been

lowered, effectively neutralizing the boost from Flame Charge.

"Thunder Punch!"

Electivire lunged, its fist crackling with high-voltage energy.

Magmortar countered by swinging its heavy arm-cannon like a club.

"Temper Flare!"

BOOM!

The collision of lightning and fire sent both Pokémon reeling. Temper Flare was

a unique move—it doubled in power if the user's previous attack had failed or

been countered. Since the Flame Charge had been tripped up, the hit landed with

double the explosive force.

Electivire skidded back, its arm vibrating from the impact. Under the Belly Drum

buff, Magmortar's physical strength was monstrous.

"BO-QIA!"

The Thunder Tyrant was finished playing games. It slammed its fists against its

chest.

"THUNDER GOD'S ARENA!"

CRACK-BOOM!

A pillar of pure, divine lightning erupted from Electivire, punching through the

clouds.

Now, Kenji had a choice. He could rely on the Radiant Rageblade to eventually

outpace the fire-beast, but that was a slow victory. He wanted to crush it here.

"Stop it! Magmortar! Focus Punch!"

Magmortar charged the lightning pillar. It closed its eyes, centering its

breathing as it pulled its fist back.

Focus Punch—the strongest Fighting-type move, boasting 150 base power. Its only

weakness was that any damage taken during the charge-up would cancel the move.

But Electivire was busy setting up the dimension. It couldn't attack.

"YA-HA!"

Magmortar's fist, backed by a six-stage Attack boost, slammed into the lightning

pillar.

THOOM—SHATTER!

The pillar shook violently. Kenji held his breath. If the shield broke now,

Electivire would be defenseless. But the Arena's construction was near-complete.

A grid of high-voltage cages snapped into place around the field, sealing them

in.

The pillar dissipated, and Electivire emerged, its eyes glowing with a

brilliant, predatory gold. It had successfully "ascended" within its domain.

"Double-Edge!"

"BO-QIA!"

Inside the Arena, Electivire didn't need to build momentum. It was a bolt of

living lightning. It slammed into Magmortar with a bone-shattering impact.

Normally, Double-Edge would recoil on the user, but the Thunder Armor,

supercharged by the Arena's energy, absorbed the feedback.

Magmortar roared, its own Fire Armor flaring as it countered with Flare Blitz.

BOOM!

The Arena became a chaotic swirl of red and gold. Fire met lightning in the

ultimate test of attrition.

Magmortar was stronger, but Electivire was faster and effectively "standing in a

fountain of health" thanks to the Arena's constant energy supply to its armor.

Frustrated and pushed to its limit, Magmortar let out a final, desperate cry. It

used Flame Charge to leap high into the air, its body glowing with the white-hot

intensity of a falling star.

"World-Ending Meteor!" Zhurong Yun commanded.

It was time for the final trade.
