"Medusa!" The Second Elder's voice cracked like splitting stone, the pressure bearing down on her squeezing the composure right out of her tone until what came out was nearly a shout. "Do not forget your place!"
"My place?"
Medusa's voice came out quiet. Then the battle aura hit — deep crimson, erupting outward like a thunderclap given physical form, vast and immediate and carrying the full weight of a Dou Zong who had just decided she was done being patient. It crashed down on the Second Elder and drove her physically downward, the pressure relentless and total.
Medusa's eyes were cold as winter glass.
"I am the Queen." Each word landed with its own weight. "I abolished those corrupt clan rules years ago. If you defy my orders again—" her gaze didn't waver "—I will deal with you according to clan law. Without exception."
Silence.
The other three elders exchanged glances — quick, careful, the kind of look shared between people reassessing a situation in real time.
Medusa's behavior today was unusual. More precisely, it was more decisive than anything they had seen from her before — a harder edge, a faster trigger. When the Snake-People scouts had reported Xiao Se's clash with Mobas upon arrival, Medusa's response had been to level a cold glare at the Second Elder and say nothing. A warning, but a restrained one.
This was different. The Second Elder moving to strike Xiao Se had crossed something, and whatever that something was, it had cut cleanly through Medusa's tolerance without leaving any room for deliberation.
Even the hunt for Butterfly — ordered by this same Second Elder, carried out under this same roof — had not produced a response like this.
Their queen was not the same woman she had been. Faced with a threat to someone she cared for, the hesitation that had once characterized her decisions was simply gone.
After a long stretch of silence, the Great Elder — who had been watching the entire exchange with the patient, measuring gaze of someone who has lived long enough to let events reach their natural conclusions — spoke.
"Second Elder." Her voice was unhurried, carrying the quiet authority of someone who had never needed volume. "Keep your people in line from this point forward. If negative talk about Butterfly continues to circulate within the clan, the responsibility will fall to you directly."
The Second Elder turned to stare at her. "Eldest Sister, you — " The disbelief in her voice was genuine. The hunt for Butterfly had not proceeded without the Great Elder's silent knowledge. For her to draw this line now, openly, in front of everyone—
"Was my meaning unclear?" the Great Elder asked, in the same indifferent tone.
A beat of strained silence. Then the Second Elder swallowed, visibly, and dropped her gaze. "…I understand."
The Great Elder let the moment settle. Then she turned back to Xiao Se, and the severity in her expression eased into something approximating warmth — or at least the closest approximation available on a face that had weathered several centuries.
"You have our word on Die's matter," she said, her hoarse voice carrying a note of genuine sincerity. "If anyone in this clan spreads rumors harmful to her going forward, they will answer to the Queen — and to me personally. You have my assurance."
"I hope that holds," Xiao Se said. Not unkindly, but without softening it either.
The Great Elder accepted this with a small nod. Then her expression shifted — something kindled in those ancient, diamond-shaped eyes, a spark of interest that had been waiting for the right moment to surface.
"I have heard that Die's ability to transform was made possible entirely by the Transformation Pill you refined." She leaned forward slightly. "With soul power at the level of a seventh-grade alchemist — you must have already sensed the faint new life within Medusa."
Xiao Se nodded. "Yes."
"Then you likely also know," the Great Elder continued, watching his face carefully, "that our clan possesses a secret method for enhancing the potential of newborns. And that we are currently gathering materials for the Heavenly Soul Blood Fusion Pill."
"Correct," Xiao Se said simply. "I'm already aware."
The four elders went very still.
For a fraction of a second, the carefully prepared expressions of venerable dignity that ancient, experienced leaders cultivate over decades simply — cracked. Astonishment, unguarded and unambiguous, flickered across all four withered faces simultaneously. They had arrived at this meeting with a plan. The plan had involved strategic leverage, a carefully timed reveal, and the extraction of at minimum a sixth-grade Snake Marrow Bone-Shedding Pill as their price for cooperation.
The plan had not accounted for the other party already knowing.
Xiao Se tilted his head. "Is there a problem?"
"No — no problem whatsoever," the Great Elder said, recovering with admirable speed. She straightened, and the flash of elation she couldn't quite suppress was visible to anyone paying attention. "I'll have the pill formula sent to you shortly."
And there it was. The Heavenly Soul Blood Fusion Pill — in terms of both the obscurity of its refinement process and the sheer rarity of its required ingredients — sat in an entirely different category from the Transformation Pill. It dwarfed the Snake Marrow Bone-Shedding Pill they had been prepared to settle for. The prospect of a seventh-grade alchemist voluntarily committing to refine it, without being asked, without negotiation, without being manipulated into it—
The Second Elder, who thirty seconds ago had been radiating cold hostility in Xiao Se's direction after being publicly reprimanded, was now looking at him with an expression that had softened considerably. The Third and Fourth Elders had undergone a similar quiet transformation.
The future of the Snake-People clan had a way of making ideology flexible.
Even Medusa — who had harbored a quiet, nagging suspicion about whether Xiao Se had used some kind of technique to enchant a certain Ya Fei into a favorable disposition — found the sharp edge of that suspicion quietly rounding off.
The Great Elder's expression had settled into something openly pleased. "Well then — since the matter is clear between us, I'll begin arranging the wedding preparations. The pill formula for the Heavenly Soul Blood Fusion Pill will be delivered to you shortly." She looked from Xiao Se to Medusa with the satisfied air of someone closing a long-open account. "I trust the timing suits you, Lord Xiao Se?"
"Anytime works for me," Xiao Se replied, with an easy smile. "I came to the Snake-People's Holy City specifically to marry Sasha."
The words landed in the room and sat there.
Medusa heard them and felt something she was not entirely prepared for — a sudden, uncharacteristic flutter of genuine panic moving through her chest. She turned to the Great Elder quickly. "Great Elder — isn't this moving rather fast?"
The Great Elder smiled, an expression that on her ancient face managed to be both reassuring and deeply knowing. "Fast is fine. Good things come to those who act. And it's perfectly natural for a new bride to feel nervous."
"Yes, yes — entirely natural," Xiao Se agreed, nodding with a solemnity that was exactly as sincere as it looked.
Medusa turned and fixed him with a flat, regal stare.
Then she turned her head away with a delicate lift of her chin. "I haven't agreed to marry you."
"You're about to be a mother," Xiao Se pointed out pleasantly. "Who else would you be marrying?"
Before she could formulate a response to this, he extended his right hand and let his battle qi flow — a gentle, inexorable pull that drew her sideways and into his arms before she'd properly registered that it was happening.
"Let go of me—!" The color in Medusa's face was spectacular. She was a five-star Dou Zong; his strength, objectively, was no longer sufficient to simply move her against her will with her cultivation this elevated.
She offered a firm and dignified resistance.
For approximately two seconds.
Then she stopped resisting, and settled against him with the air of someone who had independently decided to remain exactly where they were, for reasons entirely unrelated to the arm around them.
The four elders watched this with the collected composure of women who had witnessed centuries of Snake-People history, great battles, political upheavals, and natural disasters.
This was somehow still a lot.
The Great Elder cleared her throat. "Then it's settled. Your wedding will be held when Die emerges from seclusion. Until then—" she gestured between them with the brisk practicality of someone moving an agenda forward "—please make use of the time."
Xiao Se nodded. He reached down and took Medusa's hand — a simple, unhurried gesture — and led her toward the door. She didn't pull away.
They walked out of the bamboo forest hand in hand, the late desert light stretching long shadows across the pale sand ahead of them.
At the forest's edge, Medusa stopped.
She turned to look at him, and the expression on her face was quieter than anything she'd shown inside — not soft exactly, but open in the way that rare, private moments allow. "Xiao Se." She paused. "Thank you. For Die."
"You don't need to thank me," he said, with a faint smile. "You're a Dou Zong now. Honestly, with the power and authority you hold, who in the clan would dare openly oppose your will?"
Medusa shook her head slowly. "It's more complicated than that." She was quiet for a moment, choosing her words with the care of someone who had held this alone for a long time. "I am the queen. And now that I've broken through to the Dou Zong level, yes — none of those four would dare move against my direct commands. But the Second Elder is a true believer. She doesn't oppose me out of ambition or personal grievance. Those corrupt clan rules are part of who she is, buried so deep they've become instinct. She's been working quietly — spreading doubts, cultivating resentment, trying to build enough pressure to force Die out of the clan again without ever technically defying me." Medusa's jaw tightened faintly. "And because she's a clan elder, I couldn't act against her openly. So I sent Die into the Medusa Temple early to receive her inheritance — to keep her safe while I found another way."
She let that settle, then looked at him directly. "Today — the four of them only agreed to compromise because of you. Because of what they saw in your potential."
Xiao Se absorbed this. He let his gaze drift toward the direction of the bamboo house they'd just left, and something in his expression sharpened with quiet contempt. "Those old women are something else," he said, his tone matter-of-fact. "Brilliant minds, completely calcified. They're Dou Huang — the hidden pillars of the entire Snake-People clan, held in reserve for genuine emergencies. That's not nothing. And yet they were genuinely prepared to throw away one of only two Dou Huang within the clan over a rule that should have been buried generations ago." He shook his head slightly. "Power without wisdom is just a larger weapon pointed at yourself."
