Professor Filius Flitwick, Charms Master and Head of Ravenclaw House, was not only a brilliant academic but also an exceptionally skilled duelist.
If the Charms taught to first-year students were basic and foundational, then the spells taught to third-year students like Aiden were far more practical.
Some could even be used for self-defense.
"Impedimenta."
At the sound of the incantation, a Gryffindor student who had been advancing suddenly halted.
It was as though an invisible wall had materialized before him.
Aiden watched intently.
The student tried moving left.
Then right.
But he could not pass the unseen barrier.
Professor Flitwick flicked his wand again.
"Impedimenta."
This time, the student failed to react quickly enough and tumbled backward onto the floor.
The practical demonstration ended there.
Aiden's fascination with magic deepened.
He had carefully observed Flitwick's wand movement, the clarity of pronunciation, and even the subtle rhythm behind the incantation.
For a fleeting moment, he felt as though he could cast the Impediment Jinx himself.
"There are two crucial elements to successful spellcasting," Professor Flitwick explained.
"First, pronunciation. If even one syllable is incorrect, the resulting magic may differ entirely from your intention."
"Do you recall the earliest example I shared with you?"
"Professor, was it the incident involving the spell that summoned a wild ox?"
"Yes, Mr. Combett. It seems your memory is excellent. Hufflepuff earns one point."
Raerh Combett gave a small bow before sitting down.
As he settled, he leaned toward Aiden.
"Aside from the wild ox incident, there is another famous example."
"Seamus Finnigan."
"Every time he attempts magic, something explodes."
"According to Gryffindor gossip, he nearly injured someone recently."
"Truly a nightmare."
Raerh's voice was calm, but a faint gleam of excitement flickered in his eyes.
He had always been strangely fascinated with explosive magic.
Aiden understood this very well.
"Are you certain it is a nightmare and not a source of delight?"
Arasso Abbott's amused voice cut in.
Aiden suppressed a smile.
Arasso was always the instigator of playful banter in their dormitory.
"You know too much."
Raerh attempted a fierce glare.
"Surely you are not planning to silence me, Mr. Combett."
Their exchange remained quiet enough to avoid attracting Professor Flitwick's attention.
Or perhaps he noticed and chose to ignore them.
Aiden allowed himself a brief moment of levity.
The weight of the Chamber of Secrets still pressed on his mind, but in this classroom, surrounded by learning, it felt lighter.
At the front, Professor Flitwick continued.
"Beyond correct pronunciation, emotion also plays a role in spellcasting."
"Certain advanced Charms require specific emotional states to function properly."
"This applies both to common everyday spells and to more complex magic grounded in deep theory."
"Emotion fuels magic."
"For example, the Patronus Charm requires one's happiest memory."
"You must draw upon pure happiness to summon your Patronus."
The scratching of quills filled the room.
Aiden wrote everything down meticulously.
Then he raised his hand.
Professor Flitwick noticed immediately.
In the past, Aiden had been average in Charms.
Today, however, his focus was unmistakable.
"Mr. Ramirez, do you have a question?"
"Yes, Professor. You mentioned that the Patronus Charm requires our happiest memories. What if someone used a euphoria potion?
Or constructed a layer of false memories to simulate happiness? Would it still be possible to cast a Patronus?"
The classroom grew quieter.
Professor Flitwick paused thoughtfully.
He appreciated students who sought deeper understanding.
"In theory, Mr. Ramirez, both approaches are conceivable. However, in practice, no wizard has successfully achieved this."
"Why is that, Professor?"
"Because the Patronus Charm requires pure joy. Not merely excitement, not artificial elation, and not fabricated memories.
It must be a genuine, deeply felt happiness. The kind connected to people, to love, to moments of truth. Only that purity grants strength to a Patronus."
Aiden fell silent.
The Patronus Charm was widely regarded as advanced magic.
Few wizards mastered it.
And Dark wizards could not produce one at all.
He had briefly considered using Occlumency to layer constructed memories over his own emotions.
Now, he understood the flaw.
False joy lacked depth.
It lacked purity.
He lowered his quill slowly, thoughts spiraling inward.
Some magic could not be deceived.
