Chapter 1 - Prologue

"I can't let my child to suffer any longer!"

The woman cried. She wore a chuba, a woolen robes made with inner layers of sheep fur and pulu robes.

"What are you talking about honey?" replied the man with a voice exhausted by continuously calling out to the sheeps.

"I said I can't watch my son to grow up in such a place any further."

"Ahh, not this again. I am tired of having this talk, over and over again." the man let out a huge sigh.

"We cannot abandon our land that our ancestors worked hard for, now can we?" He leaned towards the woman, holding her shoulders steady, looking straight into her eyes, he softly spoke;

"He is happy here, don't you see him playing and laughing with others kids?"

"I do see those but, I also see how sick he becomes when the snow falls, how he cries when the wollves howl, and-" she pushed those holding arms then swept away tears that began to fall as she remembered how much her son was hurt growing up here.

"A man can never understand the worries a mother has for her child." she wept.

The man must have grown tired from these talks they always had, so he finally decided that it was best for them to leave this place for good. He could not watch his wife cry nor his son hurt. He stood up. He headed towards the door and turned his head to his wife.

"I am going to go ask the chief to buy our land. With the money we get, we can afford to go to the capital." He tightened his muffler and went his way while the wife still layed on the ground weeping.

The next day, the sun lit up the mountains, and the villagers were up to their work. A little girl could be seen running around with her tiny legs heading towards the gate of the village. There stood a boy waiting for her as he bit into the apple.

"Come on hurry up!" called the boy.

She sprinted and stood next to the boy catching her breath.

"Why did you take so long Vivi? You said we were going the watch the sunrise at top of that hill together. Now look! It's already up." the boy grumbled. He had been waiting for her for a while now, so it was quite understandable for him to get angry.

"Sorry, I kind of overslept." she said while she was still catching her breath.

"Now what are we supposed to do now? My father must be awake now."

"Oh,You don't need to worry about him waking up this early. My father celebrated with him all night, now that your father wants to sell us your land and all."

"And what are we supposed to do now? It would be such a waste to return home now."

"Oh I know! We could still go up that hill. I heard that the view is still great from up there."

He liked the idea, his face instantly lit up.

With a smile enough to make is cheeks touch his ears he said,

"Then I will take your word for it. Come quick, let's hurry!"

The boy grabbed her hand and they were now running hastily up the hill.

They reached the summit. Their cheeks now red, they huffed and puffed at the top.

"Look! We can see the whole village from up here." The boy exclaimed.

"There goes the milkman!" He glanced over to the girl. She looked quite sad.

"Hey what's wrong?" The boy questioned.

"Is it true that you are really leaving this place?" She questioned in a soft voice.

"Yeah. I think we leave next week." He answered.

"Are you going to come back here after you leave?"

"It will take a while but I guess I will visit sometimes. "

"Then it's a promise! Come visit me again when you can." She extended her pinky finger.

"Yeah it is!"

They hold their pinky finger as a promise to be kept eventually, fulfilled no matter the what happens.
