Chapter 109 — The Millennial Capital
"How long has it been, Dagon."
Erindë's voice carried that quality of something whose tone had been crafted for the moment — a weight of a kind that communicated genuine recognition, yet also something that was not entirely human in the way it expressed that genuine recognition.
Dagon's face took on that expression of someone who had assessed something and whose assessment produced a response.
"Don't mock me, Erindë."
The elf's face showed that expression of someone whose face did something different from what it had been doing — not a broad smile, but something more contained, with that quality of weariness that was not fatigue but the kind that came from enough accumulated time for certain demonstrations to carry a different cost than they did for those with less time.
"Sorry." With that quality of voice of someone whose apology was genuine but who also recognized a real limitation beneath it. "I tried to show a little of the emotions humans feel when they see a friend after so much time."
Dagon's face showed that expression of someone who recognized it as an attempt and that the attempt had involved real effort beneath it, but the result had fallen short of what was intended.
"Next time, try faking it more. Maybe I'll fall for it."
Erindë tilted his head slightly.
"I'll try." With that quality of voice of someone who gave genuine consideration to the suggestion. "Though to me it feels like only days have passed since our last meeting."
Dagon's face showed that expression of someone processing something.
"Three years."
"It's true." He said it with that quality of someone who had received the information and integrated it, but whose integration had not completely altered how he had experienced the interval. "There's something I remember well from when we met, which was—"
"I don't have time."
Erindë's face showed that expression of someone who had something prepared to say and that something had cut off what he had prepared with that brevity that had always been of a specific kind when it came from Dagon.
"I forgot. You're always in such a hurry."
He said it with that quality of observation of someone who had accumulated enough data to make the observation with the firmness of an established fact rather than momentary criticism.
"In that case," he continued, turning toward the tree, "let's talk somewhere better."
---
From the trunk of the colossal tree, something changed.
Not all at once. With that quality of a process of something that had decided to take a different form and whose decision had been of a kind that had intent beneath it — not a random process but something whose will had determined the outcome before the outcome occurred.
The bark parted.
With that quality of separation of something that had had space there but which had not been visible — the difference between not existing and not being visible, and what emerged was of a kind that had always been there. A platform with that quality of surface of something whose material was of the tree but had been transformed into something with specific functionality — there was magic in the material that made it a different kind than wood.
It descended to where the two stood.
With that slowness of something under control — not mechanical but the kind that had intention which had determined the speed, and the speed had been determined for a specific reason.
As the platform descended:
The creatures that moments before had been in a state of pursuit began to withdraw.
Not all at once. With that quality of withdrawal of something that had received a decision in a way that was not through words — a connection between what Erindë had communicated and the state of the creatures that was not visible communication but a kind whose result communicated that communication had occurred. The green dragon with that quality of descent of something with enough mass for the descent to produce sound before its body touched the ground — its wings folding with that slowness of something under control, its eyes that had been fixed on Dagon and Jelim shifting away with that quality of disinterest that was not indifference but the kind that had received and fulfilled an order. It circled the trunk with that quality of movement of something whose body was large enough that the movement required space of a kind that altered the space around it simply by its scale.
The forest spirits withdrew with that quality of presence that had been and gradually became something that had been and then was no longer, without a precise moment of transition — something that dissipated with that quality where dissolution itself was the movement.
The mother trees receded back among the other trees.
With that slowness of something with sufficient scale that the receding produced the sound of roots repositioning and canopies moving with that quality of wind that was not wind but displacement of air by sufficient mass. And then they became motionless with that quality of immobility of something that had been active and had returned to being background — a difference of kind between the two ways of being that the immobility communicated.
Only the Ents whose limbs Dagon had severed remained where they had fallen.
With that quality of presence of something that had been incapacitated and whose incapacitation had not eliminated it — there was life beneath the missing limbs of a kind that had continuity of being which did not depend completely on the limbs. Some with that quality of attempting movement — roots trying to reposition with that slowness of a damaged process where the damage had altered the form but not eliminated the intention.
Jelim looked at them.
With that expression of someone processing something — a situation that had passed and whose passing had left information that her system was integrating.
The platform landed.
Dagon stepped up first with that naturalness of someone who had done this before — not this exact platform, but the kind of confidence in the process that came not from specific knowledge but from enough experience that things of a new nature did not produce the hesitation they produced in those with less.
Jelim stepped up next.
With that quality of movement of someone whose evaluation had preceded the movement — a decision before the gesture that had more layers than simply stepping onto a floating surface.
Erindë stepped up with that quality of movement of someone who had done it so many times that the movement was not deliberation but an extension of his state — a naturalness that communicated accumulated time beneath it.
And they began to rise.
---
As the platform rose along the trunk:
The elven archers.
Each had taken hold of a root with that quality of gesture of someone for whom it was routine — something that had been done enough times for the doing to require no deliberation. The roots rising with them with that quality of movement of something with a connection between elf and root that was not tool-like but a kind of relationship that made the joint movement another kind entirely.
They rose in silence.
With that quality of silence of something where communication was not through words — something had been done, the doing had ended, and there was something next that had to happen in another place, and going to that other place was what mattered.
None of them looked at the platform where the three were.
With that quality of not-looking of something where attention was on what needed to be done rather than indifference to who had arrived — there was a difference between the two, and the not-looking was of the kind that communicated that difference.
---
At the surface:
When the platform emerged through the hole in the ceiling of the underground world — a circle of a size that had been created by the tree's growth over enough time for the hole to be of a scale that communicated time beneath it — the light arrived as something different.
Not the luminescence of the underground.
Surface light with that quality of something with sun beneath it — temperature in the light, something that had been absent.
The platform emerged from the hole with that slowness of something under control.
Around the hole, on the surface soil of Velerithon:
Elves.
But of a different kind than the underground archers. With that quality of a state where the activity was of a nature different from combat or guarding — something they were doing that was of another kind of function.
Some with their hands on the tree's bark.
With that quality of touch that was not inspection or use but a kind of relationship with what they touched that was of another nature — something in the touch that was contact of a kind that was communication without words. Their eyes closed with that quality of attention turned inward rather than outward, and the turning inward had something specific beneath it.
Praise of a kind that was not words but presence — something the tree received and whose receiving was a relationship with time beneath it.
Others in a circle around the hole.
The archers who had risen from the underground joined them with that quality of movement of something going to its place, where arriving was different from being and being was a continuity of something that had existed before they arrived.
They stood motionless around the hole with that quality of immobility that had function beneath it — a kind of guard that was not active vigilance but presence with the intention of being there as its function. Their gaze with that quality of attention that was on the space but had something more internal beneath it — a state that was presence and function at the same time, and the two did not exclude each other.
Time had that quality of something that did not carry the same urgency as in the underground world or in the spaces Dagon and Jelim knew — a presence of a kind with a different scale of time beneath it, and standing around the hole was of a kind where hours served a different function than hours did for those who had grown up with another scale of time.
None looked at the platform.
With that quality of not-looking of something that had received information — a signal had arrived that outsiders had come, of a kind where the protocol was not greeting but continuation of what was — a kind where arrival did not interrupt what already was, but there was recognition of a type that needed no pause to be real recognition.
Jelim looked at them.
With that expression of someone receiving something her system was processing — information about the space had arrived and its arrival had produced something that needed to be integrated.
The platform continued to rise.
---
"We almost died."
Dagon said it with that quality of observation of someone who had been in a situation and whose observation came from having been inside it and come out, with an interval between the two that provided perspective unavailable while inside.
Erindë's face showed that expression of someone processing something.
"It was necessary."
With that quality of voice that had explanation beneath it but also recognition that a full explanation was the kind that carried a time cost which needed to be calibrated against the value of the recipient's time.
Dagon's face showed that expression of someone evaluating the response.
"You could have answered faster."
Erindë's face showed that expression of someone considering something.
"To me, I answered immediately." With that quality of voice that had genuine information beneath the sentence. "It's difficult for me to adapt to your reality of time when I have been behaving within my own for millennia." A pause of the kind that carried consideration. "But I will try."
The platform kept rising.
With that slowness of something with scale beneath it — enough to climb that the climbing itself contained time that would pass before they arrived.
Jelim with that expression of someone processing information she had been accumulating.
"You've been here before." She said to Dagon with that quality of statement of someone who had reached a conclusion and whose conclusion came from observation rather than accusation.
"No."
Jelim's face showed that expression of someone who had received an answer and whose answer had not resolved the question beneath it.
"Then where did the confidence come from? With the creatures. With the archers. With everything."
Dagon paused with that quality of someone who had something that needed to be said and that needed to be said with honesty, but also with the recognition that the way it would be said carried a specific cost.
"It was a gamble."
Jelim's face showed that expression of someone who had heard and whose hearing had produced something.
"I met Erindë three years ago. We traveled together for a while." His voice carried that quality of someone saying there was more than what he was saying but that the more would be decided in the moment. "Before we parted, he told me that if I ever reached the underground world and wanted to find him, I should go to that tree, endure whatever came, and shout what I shouted."
Pause.
"Deep down I thought he was joking. He says important things as if they were nothing. I never fully know if he's being serious or not."
Jelim stood motionless for a moment.
With that quality of immobility of someone processing something that had multiple things at once — information that needed to be integrated, and the integration would produce evaluation, and the evaluation would produce a response.
"You risked my life."
She said it with that quality of voice of someone who had something that needed to be said directly before anything else.
"On a gamble. On something you still doubted."
"Yes."
"I don't know if you're overly confident or just an idiot."
Dagon's face showed that expression of someone evaluating the two options.
"I'll accept strategic genius."
Jelim's face showed that expression of someone who had a response that needed to be given and also the recognition that there was something that would not serve if the response was given in that moment — something that would have to wait for later, and the later would have its right moment.
"And in what way does this place help us with Steve. And with Fantom."
"Information." With that quality of voice of someone whose confidence had experience beneath it. "I don't know a more informed people on this continent. If there's anything to know about the caravan, about Fantom, about what happened — it's here."
Jelim's face showed that expression of someone integrating something.
"I hope so."
---
The platform passed through the clouds.
Not gradually. With that quality of transition of something with thickness in the cloud that had an entrance and an exit — a moment of being inside and a moment of being outside, and the two were of a kind with a real difference between them.
Inside the clouds there was that quality of something not to be seen but felt — humidity and temperature and pressure of a kind with something beneath it that was different from being on one side or the other.
And then the vision.
---
Jelim stood motionless.
Not from hesitation. With that quality of immobility of someone who had received information of a kind that demanded a pause before any further processing could continue — the kind where her system had stopped not from failure but because it needed to process before it could do more.
Dagon stood beside her.
With that expression of someone who had seen before — not this specific place, for it was a first time for him too — but of a kind whose scale he had learned to receive over enough time for the reception to be of a different kind.
Above the clouds:
The branches of the tree.
With that scale of branch that needed to be calibrated against what a branch was before it could be processed as a branch. Each with that extension where the distance between where it began and where it ended was of a kind that had cities between the two points.
And there were cities.
On each branch with that arrangement of something that had happened over enough time for the happening to be of a kind that spanned millennia — construction of a kind that could not have happened in a person's time but of a kind with a scale of time beneath it. Bridges between branches with that quality of engineering whose material was not of the kind found on the central continent — something in the bridges that was magic of a kind integrated with the tree, making the material another kind than construction material.
Waterfalls from some branches that had mountains above — water falling from heights that would produce mist before reaching below the clouds, snow of the kind from the highest peaks that would fall in such a way that it arrived as snow and not water.
And in the center:
Where the crown of the tree would be.
The capital.
With that quality of something that needed to be seen all at once before it could be seen in parts — a dimension that needed to be received as a totality before the eye could begin to break it down. The buildings of a material that was not completely wood and not completely stone but something that had integrated materials in ways that came from knowledge with millennia accumulated beneath it.
It was the kind of thing that spoke of a civilization that had been building for long enough that the building carried history in the construction, legible in the way it had been built.
Erindë stood beside them with that quality of presence of someone who had been in that place long enough that being there no longer produced the kind of response it had produced the first time — but something remained of a kind that carried permanent recognition of something important, no matter how many times it had been seen.
"The millennial capital." The voice carried that quality of pride of a kind that was not declared but existed beneath in such a way that it did not need to be declared to be present. "The heart of both continents."
Jelim had that quality of gaze of someone who was seeing something and whose seeing was producing something that her system was still processing.
Dagon beside her.
With the expression of someone who had seen something for the first time and whose first time was of a kind that would not be forgotten — the kind where there are things that, when seen for the first time, remain in a way that is not merely memory but something that alters permanently.
The millennial capital above them.
With that quality of something that had existed before anything the three of them knew and that would continue to exist after most of the things they knew had ended.
And the platform continued to rise.
Toward the heart of something that had existed for millennia before it had a name that anyone who was not an elf could speak.
