Chapter 92 - 2nd Descend XXXII

Quinn and Rate closed the final distance like two demons forged in different hells.

Quinn struck first. His aura-powered gauntlet, blazing with golden fury, hammered into Agatha's protective barrier with a thunderous boom. The golden-white dome shuddered violently. Wide cracks spider-webbed across its surface like fracturing ice. The force of the impact drove Agatha backward through the air. Her cold eyes narrowed behind the shimmering shield. She never stopped chanting.

At the same moment, Rate exploded into motion. Eighteen of his remaining blade-tentacles uncoiled in a storm of blackened steel and writhing darkness. They lashed forward in a synchronized symphony of vertical slashes and horizontal cuts, each edge humming with unstable void energy. The tentacles struck the already compromised barrier with apocalyptic precision. Combined with Quinn's relentless pressure, the golden-white shield finally shattered in a brilliant detonation of light and sound. Golden fragments exploded outward like dying embers, scattering across the ruined chamber.

Rate flowed forward without hesitation. His emaciated, darkness-fused body leaned into Agatha's personal space with horrifying intimacy. His dark saber rose in a lethal arc, unstable malevolent energy screaming along the blade as he aimed to carve her head from her shoulders in one clean, savage stroke.

Agatha's lips curved into a razor-thin smile.

In that razor-sharp instant, her left arm snapped forward. Violet sigils ignited across her palm. A single word left her lips like a death sentence:

"Graviton Dominion."

The world within fifty meters obeyed.

Gravity multiplied by one hundred in a crushing dome. The air itself seemed to solidify. Rate and Quinn were slammed downward with merciless force. Their boots cracked the already broken stone beneath them. Boulders and debris across the chamber groaned, then imploded, pulverized into smaller fragments under the overwhelming pressure. The entire ruined floor trembled as if the mountain itself was being punished.

Rate fought it with everything he had left.

His unnaturally thin limbs trembled violently. Black essence bled from the edges of his form like ink in water. His twenty blade-tentacles now ragged and fewer after the earlier barrage slammed into the ground, digging deep gouges as anchors. He refused to kneel. Step by agonizing step, he advanced. His saber remained raised in that deadly slashing momentum, trembling but never dropping. Every inch forward cost him dearly. His blackened joints screamed. His lungs burned. Yet his dark eyes, empty and bottomless, stayed locked on Agatha with pure, unrelenting hatred.

Quinn fared worse. The golden aura around his gauntlets flickered and dimmed under the crushing weight. His scarred, muscular torso strained, veins bulging across his neck and shoulders. Sweat and blood mixed on his skin as his knees buckled slightly before he forced them straight again, roaring through gritted teeth.

Agatha hovered ten feet above them, untouched by her own spell. Through her familiar's dozens of red-pupiled eyes, she watched their struggle with visible amusement. A soft, mocking chuckle escaped her lips.

"Still crawling forward? How adorable."

She raised her right hand. Thirty violet lightning sigils materialized in a wide circle around the two warriors, some hovering mere feet from Rate and Quinn. The circles crackled with malevolent energy, spinning slowly at first, then faster.

"Chain Lightning Arc!"

The moment the gravity pressure released dropping as suddenly as it had appeared, the lightning triggered.

Thirty circles erupted simultaneously. Blinding violet bolts lanced outward, connecting in a deadly, ever-shifting web of electricity. The arcs jumped and chained relentlessly between the circles, forming a cage of continuous, searing current. Rate and Quinn were caught dead center in the maelstrom.

Quinn's roar turned into a guttural groan of agony. His golden aura defense cracked and frayed as the lightning fried his nervous system. Electricity coursed through his gauntlets, up his arms, and across his bare, scarred chest. His muscles seized violently. He couldn't move. Every bolt that struck him connected to another, forming a closed loop of torment that kept him locked in place. Smoke rose from his skin. The smell of charred flesh filled the air.

Rate's tentacles shivered and convulsed wildly. Several of them went completely limp, paralyzed by the overwhelming current. Dark essence boiled and evaporated where the lightning touched his emaciated frame. His jaw clenched so hard that cracks formed along his darkened teeth. Energy dust drifted from his body like black snow. He remained standing only through sheer monstrous will, but even his unnatural fluidity had been stolen from him.

Agatha levitated higher in one graceful motion, her violet robes fluttering. She stretched her right index finger forward. All thirty lightning circles suddenly converged and merged into a single, massive, pulsating sigil directly in front of the paralyzed warriors. The power intensified.

With her left hand, she wove water magic into the spell, cool, conductive, amplifying strands of liquid energy that fused seamlessly with the lightning. The result was catastrophic.

A blinding white-violet light erupted.

The combined spell detonated with a deafening thunderclap that shook the entire chamber. A colossal wave of amplified lightning and superheated water energy swept outward like a biblical storm. Rate and Quinn were caught in its full fury.

They were blasted backward with terrifying force.

Both warriors shot across the devastated floor like cannonballs, tearing through what remained of the stone and debris. They smashed through the far entrance of the chamber with bone-shattering impact, carving deep, dual craters into the thick walls. The collision triggered violent aftershocks. The entire entrance corridor collapsed in a roaring avalanche of rock and dust. Massive boulders tumbled down, sealing the path behind them. What was once a wide passageway vanished, leaving only a mountain of jagged rubble and collateral destruction.

Silence fell across the ruined chamber, broken only by the distant rumble of settling stone and the crackle of dying electricity.

Moments later, deep within the collapsed entrance, movement stirred beneath the debris.

A blackened, skeletal hand burst upward, shoving aside heavy boulders with raw strength. Rate emerged from the wreckage like a nightmare crawling out of its grave. Thick smoke radiated from his emaciated body in heavy waves. His breathing came in ragged, desperate gasps as he fought for air. His dark saber was still clutched tightly in his right hand, the blade chipped and flickering weakly.

He stood there, swaying, staring down at the rubble-strewn floor. His once numerous blade-tentacles were gone, either severed during the fight or completely paralyzed and retracted into his darkness-fused form. His back looked unnaturally bare. Only faint wisps of black essence leaked from the stumps where they had been.

Exhaustion weighed on him like never before. His blackened eyes, usually filled with cold malevolence, now reflected only hollow fatigue. He said nothing. He simply stood, chest heaving, as dust and small stones continued to fall around him.

Several meters to his right, more debris shifted.

Quinn crawled out from beneath a pile of boulders, his movements weak and broken. Smoke poured off his body in twice the volume that came from Rate. His once powerful frame was in terrible condition, skin blackened in large patches, deep burns covering his shoulders and chest. His pants were torn and burnt away in sections, revealing raw, scorched flesh beneath. Blood trickled from multiple wounds.

He rose onto all fours, gasping desperately, each breath sounding like it might be his last. His caramel eyes were unfocused, glazed with pain. He tried to push himself up to stand, muscles trembling violently, but his strength failed him completely. Quinn collapsed sideways, rolling down a small slope of leveled debris before landing hard on his back.

He lay there, utterly helpless, staring up at the dark, cracked ceiling far above. His mind was blank, numbed by pain and exhaustion. The golden energy that usually crackled around his gauntlets had vanished entirely. His scarred torso rose and fell in shallow, labored breaths.

For the first time in a long while, the golden battering ram looked truly broken.
