The loud, terrible, unbroken BEEEEEEP of the heart monitor echoed through the cold underground room. It was the worst sound in the entire world.
Adonis stared at the giant computer screen. The golden progress bar was completely frozen.

The bright blue tunnel of light shooting between the two beds began to flicker. It was sputtering like a dying flashlight. On the first bed, Nikki's frail human body was perfectly still. On the second bed, the beautiful, flawless new body lay empty, the green Genesis Pearl beating gently, waiting for a soul that hadn't arrived.
