Cherreads

Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Attempted Thievery

Facing each other, Aurora and Sol get ready to square up.

Kamish and Eidolon cheer the both of them on while floating on each side of their trainer.

"Alright, go." Lazarus says, and the fight starts.

Fire melts ice so Aurora is at a disadvantage, Sol knows this and lets her make the first move.

Aurora starts running around Sol in a circle. Her body emanates an icy chill. She fires her first ice shard at Sol. The tip of the shard is blunt, so it doesn't hurt Sol.

Sol jumps in the air and uses flamethrower to melt the ice shard. Ice doesn't melt instantly so the shard hits his body, but the heat did make the shard harmless.

Several more shards fly towards him and he uses the same technique to melt as much of the shard as possible to soften the impact while also dodging a few of them.

As he does this, Aurora creates a wall of ice directly in front of her and Sol.

Sol knowns he won't be able to melt the wall instantly so he doesn't even try. He tries to get to Aurora by bypassing the wall from the side.

Aurora predicted this, and does the same thing Sol does. She bypasses the wall from the left while he does it from the right. They end up at each other's former positions, Aurora stands where Sol was moments ago, as Sol stands where Aurora made the ice wall from.

Aurora's Ice Beam creates another wall, connected with the previous one, but this wall curves. Aurora swiftly runs in a circle around Sol and imprisons him inside a circular wall of ice.

Then she makes a few ice steps on the side of the wall and uses them to get to the top and makes a lid to make sure Sol can't jump out.

Sol is surprised by the tactic Aurora just used. He uses flamethrower on the wall in front of him. The wall starts melting into water, Sol increases the intensity of the flamethrower and makes it so that the ice turns into steam the moment it turns into water.

Sol creates a hole in his ice prison and gets out through the steam. He sees Aurora with multiple ice shards and prepares for a flamethrower attack.

"Okay, stop." Lazarus calls out, "It's a draw. You did good Aurora, but Sol would have won if he really tried to. He didn't use his flamethrower on you because he didn't want to hurt you, same as you didn't use sharp ice shards on him."

Aurora nods, satisfied with this outcome. She yips at Sol, praising him for being a good sport.

"I'm proud of you both. Aurora, good work with the ice prison, that was a good strategy. If your opponent wasn't a fire type you probably would have won. Sol, if you had decided to melt the roof of the prison then you would have been in trouble but you didn't, so good work there. You did lack the tactics that Aurora had but she is an ice type which gives her more things to do with her abilities, so you both can't be judged with the same standards."

Sol nods, and asks how he can use his fire to do clever things like Aurora.

"Honestly you don't need to do all that. You won't need clever tactics to win because you'll never fight alone, the rest of the team will always be with you. Your job is to be the attacker of team, you will hit the opponent hard and make sure they don't get back up. And as for as tournaments are concerned, leave the tactics to me. I'll take care of them. You will be our sword just like Eidolon is our shield."

Sol gives him a determined nod.

Then Eidolon and Kamish start asking him questions.

Lazarus sighs, "Yes Kamish, you can turn your body incorporeal so you probably would have won against either of them. But we can test that tomorrow. I'm thinking today we keep doing the same fights all day. You vs Eidolon and Aurora vs Sol. It will be fun to see how differently you perform in each match. And as for the question you asked Eidolon, you are weak against fire because it can heat your exoskeleton but resistant against ice."

They spend the next few hours fighting, training and resting. One pair rests while the other fights and then they all train together and then the fighting begins again.

The outcome of all matches is roughly the same, Kamish wins against Eidolon every time but each time Kamish has to use more of his power to defeat Eidolon. As for Aurora and Sol, the majority of the matches are won by Sol with a few draws from time to time.

It's lunch time now and they are all sitting next to the cruiser, chatting and eating.

Kamish and Aurora are in competition to see who can eat their food in more style.

Kamish makes Eidolon float his food in the air, so he can eat it while doing flips in air.

Sol throws berries towards Aurora, who jumps and captures the food with her mouth.

Lazarus smiles seeing this, then he hears a beep on his wristcomm, the drones have spotted something, he checks the footage and sees that a flying pokemon is approaching their camp site.

"Uh oh. Guys get ready, a pokemon is attacking us. I am guessing it's trying to steal our food." He says to his pokemon, who instantly stop playing and get ready to fight, for real this time.

Kamish squints his eyes at the target flying towards them, and starts channeling dragon force all around his body, he won't let any bird steal his or his family's food. He also doesn't like the fact that this bird made them stop playing, he was winning and now Aurora might refuse to accept him as the winner.

Eidolon finds and levitates stones in the air, Sol prepares a flamethrower, Aurora creates shards of ice, she doesn't like the bird interrupting their play time any more than Kamish does, she was having a lot of fun and she was obviously winning.

Lazarus zooms in towards the target with his visors and sees what pokemon it is, "I don't think this pokemon will be a problem, but lets still be careful."

The pokemon they are about to go up against is a Staravia, evolved form of Starly, it has a long tuff of feathers on its head which curls forward, and black and white markings around its body.

"Eidolon and Aurora, you go first. Throw rocks and ice at it as a warning shot, if it still decides to attack then Sol and Kamish will take care of it."

Staravia arrives above their head, brandishing its claws, its eyes are on the prize, boxes of berries and meat. The scent is making its mouth water in anticipation.

Staravia takes a dive as a rock shoots past it at full speed, followed by an ice shard that almost makes a hole through its wings.

Staravia is shocked and goes back higher in the air and looks back down, circling above.

It has never seen these species of pokemon before. They looked small enough that it thought they would run away in fear if it attacked. Especially the small snake looking one. That one looks fragile and weak with that slim body, one gust of wind and it goes flying.

And the fox that just shot those sharp things at it? Staravia didn't think the pretty white one would be a danger to it in any way.

What just happened forces Staravia to reevaluate the threat level of its attempted thievery. Now it's clear to the Staravia that if it wants to get some of that delicious smelling food then it will have to fight all four of the pokemon.

But maybe it could attack the human? It hasn't seen many around here, but some do come from time to time and they don't seem to have any special ability.

Ultimately, Staravia resists the temptation and seduction of food and decides the fight won't be worth just a single days food.

It decides to got back to its flock.

"Well, at least you tried." Lazarus picks up a few berries from his lunch box and throws them towards the Staravia in the air.

The Staravia catches the berries with its beak and flies away, it's better to accept what is given than die trying to get more.

"Be proud, you are not stupid." Lazarus mutters as they go back to eating their food.

Kamish is disappointed that he didn't get to fight the bird, he was really looking forward to knocking it out of the sky.

Lazarus senses his disappointment and says, "Don't be disheartened. We will get plenty of chances to fight. There won't be a shortage of pokemon wanting to pick fights with us. It's only a matter of time until another one tries to steal from us."
